The subjects were the students from a middle school located in Cheongju-City. The school was selected by convenient sampling and self-answered questionnaire was filled in by the students for a week from December 19th 2011. The survey result showed that 77 male students and 169 female students(total 246 students) answered 'yes' to the question 'Have you ever felt fear when you visited a dentist?' among 475 students who had visited a dentist in the past. The distribution of responses in each category of fear was examined by frequency analysis. The study results showed significant difference in the item of 'causing irritation during the dental treatments' between male students and female students (p<0.05). Converting the level of fear into scores after marking the answers, the score of male students was 52.0 points and the score of female students was 58.53 showing the score of female students was significantly higher in statistics. Moreover, the fear score of female students for the category 'causing irritation during the dental treatments' was also significantly higher in statistics(p<0.05). Therefore, these results should be reflected to the dental care environments in order for the adolescent to reduce the dental anxiety and fear.

  • The purposes of this study were to classify high school male and female students according to body cathexis and appearance interest, and understand their appearance management behaviors and clothing benefits sought. The results were as follows : First, the body cathexis of high school students were low, and female students had lower body cathexis than male students especially in the lower halves of bodies. The appearance interests of students were high, but female students had higher appearance interests than male students. Second, male students were classified by body cathexis and appearance interest into three groups with high, middle, and low body cathexis and appearance interest, and most of them belonged to the middle group. Female students were classified into four groups(with high body cathexis and appearance interest, with high body cathexis but low appearance interest, with low body cathexis but high appearance interest, and with low body cathexis and appearance interest) and most of them belonged to the group with low body cathexis but high appearance interest. Third, male students in groups with high and middle body cathexis and appearance interest showed more appearance management behaviors than those in the group with low body cathexis and appearance, while management behavior, followed by the group with low body cathexis but high appearance interest, that with high body cathexis but low appearance interest, and that with low body cathexis and appearance interest. Fourth, female students sought more aesthetics, fashionability, brand, and price in clothing coml)wed to male students. Male students in high and middle groups tended to seek more aesthetics, fashionability, and brand than those in the low group, but all three groups didn't consider price benefit sought. Female students with high body cathexis and appearance interest tended to seek more aesthetics and fashionability than those in other three groups. And only the group with low body cathexis and appearance interest didn't consider brand benefit sought. All four groups were found to consider price benefit sought. I hope that results of this study help teachers to guide students' clothing life more positively by understanding their appearance management behaviors and clothing benefits sought than to control negatively.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physical activity on suicidal ideation according to gender in South Korean adolescents. Methods: This study is designed as a cross-sectional study. Using the statistics from the 12th (2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. The study sample comprised 62,558 middle and high school students aged primarily 12 to 17. Results: The rate of engaging in physical activity more than three times a week was 39.6% for boys and 28.8% for girls and the rate of suicide ideation was 9.35% for boys and 14.9% for girls. Male students were 1.42 times more likely to commit suicide when they did not engage in physical activity than when they do more than three times a week but it was found to have no significant effect on female students. Conclusion: Physical activity should be encouraged in the physical education curriculum and the school health area to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents. Differentiated interventions are required according to gender. It is suggested that intervention programs involving physical activity be implemented more actively for male students and intervention programs centering on obesity and smoking prevention be implemented for female students.

  • The purposes of this study were to compare middle school students' alcohol expectancies with high school students' alcohol expectancies and to identify factors (family history of alcohol problems, television advertisements, age, gender, drinking experience, alcohol prevention education) related to their alcohol expectancies. A total of 1,164 middle school students in seven metropolitan areas in Korea participated in this study. The major finding of this study was that the respondents scored higher on negative alcohol expectancies than high school adolescents. As found in previous studies, factors related to adolescents' alcohol expectancies were also significantly related to respondents' alcohol expectancies in this study. Respondents who had family histories of alcohol problems, had drinking experiences, and were older expect drinking in a more positive manner. This study also found that alcohol advertising affected respondents' alcohol expectancies. However, this study found that current substance abuse prevention programs did not affect respondents' alcohol expectancies at all. This finding may suggest that some changes on current prevention programs should be needed in order to be more effective. Finally the result on the relationship gender and alcohol expectancies in this study was different from previous studies. Female respondents expected drinking more positively than male counterparts. This study suggests that further studies on this issue are necessary.

  • This study aims to investigate the online class preference depending on students' gender and school level. To achieve this aim, the study conducted a survey on 4,803 elementary, middle, and high school students in 17 regions nationwide. The valid data of 4,524 were then analyzed using the Apriori algorithm to discern the associated patterns of the online class preference corresponding to their gender and school level. As a result, a total of 16 rules, including 7 from elementary school students, 4 from middle school students, and 5 from high school students were derived. To be specific, elementary school male students preferred software-based classes whereas elementary female students preferred maker-based classes. In the case of middle school, both male and female students preferred virtual experience-based classes. On the other hand, high school students had a higher preference for subject-specific lecture-based classes. The study findings can serve as empirical evidence for explaining the needs of online classes perceived by K-12 students. In addition, this study can be used as basic research to present and suggest areas of improvement for diversifying online classes. Future studies can further conduct in-depth analysis on the development of various online class activities and models, the design of online class platforms, and the female students' career motivation in the field of science and technology.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine dietary attitudes of students and changes in their attitudes toward the school lunch service. The participants of the study were 483 students ranging from third grade elementary school students to middle school sophomores living in the Seoguipo area of Jeju Island. The subjects were asked to complete questionnaires under the supervision of their teachers or dietitians, and data were grouped into elementary school 3rd and 4th grades, elementary school 5th and 6th grades; and middle school 1st and 2nd grades for each gender. There were no significant differences among the groups with respect to their regularity of food intake, dietary considerations, or the frequency of imbalance in their diets. In the case of female participants, their frequency of snacking decreased as their grade level increased. In general, the overall changes in dietary attitudes became more negative as their grade level increased. Male students demanded increased serving sizes of both staple food and side dishes, while female students demanded increased serving sizes dishes, but not staple food as their grade levels increased. there was also an increase in the number of student sin higher grades who discarded or did not eat enough their entire meals. The major reasons for not eating the food were : no taste to the food and not proper saltiness of food. These results may suggest that school dietitians need to pay more attention to increased taste and proper seasoning of meals. Students suggested that the school lunch service should be continued, but that it needs improvement. Students in higher grades were more aware of the importance of the environment in which the meal was provided. Also, an early education in nutrition and healthy diets seemed important in preparing them for following a healthy lifestyle in later life.

  • The purpose of the study was to assess students’preferences on vegetarian menus served at middle and high schools. Four school food service programs that served primarily vegetarian menus were located in Seoul, Kyunggi, Kangwon, and Choongnam provinces. A total of 100 menu items frequently served at the schools were identified. Students participating in the school meals programs were asked to assess their preferences of the menus using a 5-point Likert-type scale(1 : very dislike - 5 : very like). Excluding responses with significant missing data, usable responses were 659. Statistical analyses were performed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance. Menu items of the highest preference scores included kimchi stew, stir-fried kimchi, nangmyon(cold noodles), fried rice and kimchi, miso stew, soft tofu stew, and hard-boiled quail eggs in soy sauce. By menu category, one-dish foods(3.97) were the most preferred and muchim and namul were the least preferred. Female students showed higher preferences on kimchi, steamed items(jjim), stir-fried items, namul, and muchim than male students; middle school students’preference scores were higher than those of the high school students in most menu categories. The menu preference is known as one of the most important factors determining students’food consumption and satisfaction with school food service. Dietitians working at school food service programs that serve primarily vegetarian menus should provide students with nutrition education on proper food selection and focus their efforts on developing new recipes using various vegetables and preparation methods to improve students’food consumption and menu preference.
