Instrument reliability and test-retest reliability were also assessed by having the students complete the questionnaire after one month of taking the questionnaire. Results: The content validity index was 0.71 for the whole scale and values of individual subdivisions were ranging from 0.69 to 0.75. Instrument reliability measured by Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.86 for the whole scale and subdivision values were ranging from 0.32 to 0.86. Test-retest reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient, which was 0.71 for whole scales and subdivision values were ranging from 0.38 to 0.70. • Financial preparation for retirement means making financial plans by predicting expected incomes and expenditures needed for maintaining success in later life. Because this preparation needs long-term planning, preparing as early as possible is recommended. This study, therefore, uses theory of planned behavior for examining the intention of financial preparation for retirement of consumers in their 20s and 30s. By using financial education and its understanding as additional variables, this study also intends to examine the ultimate effects on the intention. The following is a summary of the main results and suggestions. First, the level of consumer financial education is lower than the average. The level of understanding finance is lower than the average, and particularly, the level of understanding retirement related finance is much lower. Second, the more the attitude of financial preparation for retirement is positive, and the higher the level of subjective norm or perceived behavioral control is, the level of the intention of financial preparation for retirement tends to be more higher. Therefore, relevant efforts to encourage this preparation are needed. Third, the level of the intention of financial preparation for retirement is higher than the average, whereas financial education has no effects on the intention. This means that despite the importance of the financial education, its current implementation has many problems. The suggestions of this study are as follows. First of all, this study can provide preliminary data for developing retirement planning programs. In addition, in terms of the policy, given that this study targets relatively young consumers in their 20s and 30s, it can provide preliminary data for making policies for their future retirements.

  • How can the history of medicine be used to cultivate medical professionalism? This study presents education using the lives of historical figures as a method based on the teaching experience of the course "Leadership of the Healers" for first-year students at the College of Medicine of the Catholic University of Korea. Existing methods, represented by the Osler method, have several limitations: first, they limit the subject of the history of medicine to certain established doctors; second, they describe medical history as a continuum of progress; and third, they present abstract virtues without context, making it difficult to apply what has been learned to specific situations. These limitations are why the lives of historical figures have not been used actively in medical education in recent years. However, education using the lives of historical figures also has clear advantages, such as the power to vividly convey the various elements of medical professionalism. This study proposes an alternative method. The characteristics of the new method can be summarized in two ways. First, it emphasizes the specific context surrounding historical figures and the choices made in specific historical circumstances, rather than presenting abstract virtues outside of the historical context, making students ponder the reality they face and the choices they make. Second, it reveals both the hidden actors and the bright and dark areas of history by selecting diverse multi-dimensional figures.

  • The main purpose of this research is to describe comprehensively the processes of clinical decision making in novice critical care nurses through clinical experience. This research was an exploratory, longitudinal study using a fieldwork approach incorporating "think-aloud" method and in-depth interviews with the study participants. The study participants consisted of 5 novice nurses assigned to critical care units at a tertiary medical center located in Seoul, among a group of 27 novice nurses who started at the same period at this hospital. The data were collected from March 1999 to April 2000. The major findings of the study is that the novice nurses followed the analytic linear model of clinical decision making in the beginning, but were changed increasingly to follow the comprehensive, integrated model of clinical decision making. Through repeated experience that resulted in increasing repertoire of clinical schema and familiarity of task environments of clinical practice the novice nurses expanded their ability to arrive at comprehensive integration of information and to arrive at accurate and time-efficient decisions. Both the analytic, linear model mostly used at the beginning period and the comprehensive, integrated model that seems to be the mode significantly dependent upon experience seem to have strengths and weaknesses as decision making processes in clinical situations. Hence, it is imperative to develop an effective orientation and training program for novice nurses through the use of clinical preceptors. In addition, students should be exposed to the process of clinical decision making early in their nursing education through an appropriate clinical experiences and clinical assignments.
