Breast cancer ranks as one of the major health problems of adult women. Studies have shown that Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is effective in detecting breast cancer in its early stages. To motivate women BSE practicing, a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was conducted. Women 40 years or older who participated in the public education program for BSE from March 11 to April 6, 1996, were randomized in an experimental group(N=50) which received a letter about the Breast Cancer Risk Appraisal and in a control group(N=50) which didn't received a letter about the Breast Cancer Risk Appraisal. After 6 months, a follow-up phone survey was taken on all participants to measure the effectiveness of the intervention. Collected data was analyzed by one, two, and three-way ANOVA with an SAS program. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The level of the Breast Cancer Risk Appraisal of the subjects is high risk(17%), moderate risk(12%), boderline risk(14%), no increased risk (57%). 2. The intervention was effective in increasing the practice scores of BSE for women(F=5.12, P<.05). 3. BSE practice scores according to breast cancer risk appraisal level of the experimental group was not significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with the control group (F=2.33, P>.05). 4. BSE practice scores according to educational level of the experimental group was significantly increased after the intervention, as contrasted with that of the control group (F=10.09, P<.001) .On the basis of this study it can be concluded that the Breast Cancer Risk Appraisal increases practice of BSE.
Background : Hypercholesterolemia is a major independent risk factor of coronary heart disease. Practice guidelines for management of hypercholesterolemia had been made in several developed countries. This study was undertaken to assess the effect of practice guideline reminders and flow-sheets to improve the quality of management of hypercholesterolemia. Methods: Practice guideline reminders and flow-sheets based on National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel II guidelines, were placed on the office desks of outpatient department of family medicine at the Asan Medical Center. Before this intervention, we educated the doctors to use these reminders and flow-sheets. The charts of all patients who had cholesterol levels greater than or equal to 240 mg/dl during 4 months before and after introduction of reminders and flow-sheets, were reviewed retrospectively. We compared the performances of physicians about management of hypercholesterolemia between pre-intervention period and post-intervention period. Results: The detection rate of hypercholesterolemia in post-intervention period was increased to 83.2% compared by 71.5% in pre-intervention period. Risk factor analysis for coronary heart disease increased significantly from 16.9% to 68.7%. Adequacy of management was 19.2% in pre-intervention period and 78.0% in post-intervention period. It showed statistically significant improvement in management of hypercholesterolemia. Conclusion : This study suggested that practice guideline reminders and flow-sheets were the effective methods in improving the quality in management of hypercholesterolemia.
Breast cancer ranks as one of the major health problems of adult women. Studies have shown that the BSE educational program based on the Individually Prescribed Instruction Model is effective in BSE practice. To motivate women in BSE practicing, a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. The subjects of the study were 49 Women who participated in the educational program of BSE and were mothers of D middle school in D City. The instruments of study were a BSE frequency & proficiency recording chart and a BSE confidence scale developed by Elearnor. The data was collected from September 4 in 1997 to April 30 in 1998 and was analyzed with an SAS program. The results were summarized as follows : 1) Frequency scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretest(t=1.32, P<.01). 2) Proficiency scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretest (t = 1. 69, P<.001). 3) Confidence scores in BSE practice in the posttest was significantly increased after the intervention as contrasted with that in the pretes(t=l1.48, P<.01). 4) The Pearson correlation coefficient between BSE frequency scores and confidence scores in BSE practice was significant (r =.72, P<.001). On the basis of this study, it can be concluded that the BSE educational program has improved BSE compliance.

This study was intended to investigate the effect of aptitude of child care teacher of child care trainees on the stress of child care practice and management of stress as quality and aptitude of child care teachers are being discussed and necessity of revaluation on teaching practice of child care trainees are being brought up recently. First, as a result of collecting data from 268 child care trainees, stress of child care and teaching practice and stress management showed difference between grades. Secondly, among lower factors of aptitude of child care teachers, it was identified that stress is higher in a relationship between child care center director and guidance teachers when sociability with infants is lower. Thirdly, it was identified that teachers can cope with stress of child care and teaching practice when they have higher creativity, self-development, activeness, and positiveness among lower factors of aptitude of child care teachers.
Purpose: This study analyzes the self-efficacy and CAD/CAM practice of dental technology students with the aim of providing data that will be useful for improving CAD/CAM education. Methods: A questionnaire survey on self-efficacy and CAD/CAM practice was given to students who participated in face-to-face classes in the Department of Dental Technology at a college in Daegu and Gyeongsangnam-do. The survey period was two weeks long (June 15, 2020 to July 2, 2020), and 84 students completed the questionnaire. Results: The higher the self-efficacy, the fewer difficulties or mistakes students made in CAD/CAM practice. The most difficult parts of the scanning process were the top and bottom arc operation and the bite match arc insertion. The most difficult part of the design work was the use of (multiple) tools. The difference between the degree of difficulty and the degree of mistakes during the practical course was shown as the margin line setting in the design work. Setting the margin line was not difficult, but the degree of mistakes was nonetheless high. In the CAM process, height control was the most difficult part, but the degree of mistakes did not differ according to students' self-efficacy. Conclusion: Given that higher self-efficacy correlated with fewer difficulties or mistakes in CAD/CAM practice, students should be encouraged to enhance their self-efficacy. This may be done by improving their satisfaction with their major course of study, forming friendly relations with their colleagues, and increasing the ratio of performance rather than observation in CAD/CAM practice.
Since the introduction of Western concept of nursing to Korea in late 1880s, Korean nursing practice has evolved into Korean culture. The purpose of this study was to explore and identify similarities and differences in hospital nursing practice between Korea and the United States using the grounded theory method. The data were gathered from 15 Korean nurses working in U.S. hospitals using semi-structured, in-depth interview method. Major similarities in nursing practice between Korea and U.S. existed in the 7 domains that Benner indicated in 1984. The nursing administration system was also similar in both countries. On the other hand, differences existed in how nurses execute these domains of nursing practice. These are the roles of nurses. nurse aides and family members. and the interpersonal relationships, and problem presentation and problem-solving strategies. American family members rarely participated in the patient's bedside nursing care, while Korean family members actively participated. American nurse aide participated in direct patient care, while Korean nurse aides did not. Also Korean nurses were participated more in administering and managiang the patient's diagnostic and treatment modalities, while American nurses foucused on the needs and demands of the patient. In terms of interpersonal relationships, American patients were more self-centered and demanding than Korean. American nurses focused more on the right of individuals while Korean nurses were more oriented to harmony with the coworkers. With inferiors and superiors, American members were more egalitarian, while Koreans tended to be hierachical. In ways of suggesting problems, American nurses tended to pick out the problems more frequently than Korean nurses did.. As to ways to solve the problems, American nurses relied heavily on explicit verbal explanations, while Korean nurses relied more on bodily action and behaviors. The results of this comparative study contribute to nursing by adding knowledge on the theory of culture care by describing the similarities and differences in nursing practice between Korea and the United States.
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the 6-year clinical pharmacy curriculum in Korea among 35 schools of pharmacy and to compare the pharmacy practice experience curriculum with the U.S. Methods: Data on the 6-year clinical pharmacy curriculum was collected and analyzed from 35 schools of pharmacy in Korea. Data were collected from each school's website, or through professors in clinical pharmacy or the administrative office, when not available online. Guidance for U.S. clinical pharmacy curriculum was referenced from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Accreditation Standards and Guidelines. Results: Pharmacotherapy was the only course that was offered in every school of pharmacy with average of $11.5{\pm}2.8$ credit hours offered. Only six subjects were offered in more than half of the schools. Average pharmacy practice experience credit hours in Korea were $1.8{\pm}0.6$, $7.8{\pm}1.5$, $4.9{\pm}1.2$, $3.5{\pm}1.1$, $11.8{\pm}1.2$ in introductory, hospital, community, pharmaceutical industry and administration, and intensified pharmacy practice experience, respectively. While the U.S. required introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) to be conducted in the real pharmacy setting, the IPPE in Korea was conducted as an in-class simulation. The total required hours of IPPEs and APPEs were 1400 hours in Korea and 1740 (300+1440) hours in the U.S. Conclusion: Clinical pharmacy curriculum in Korea is offered through a variety of courses and the pharmacy practice experience curriculum has been adopted by every school of pharmacy. A guidance outlining the major required contents of clinical pharmacy curriculum could help standardize and advance the clinical pharmacy education in Korea.
The purposes of this study were to analyze elementary school mathematics textbooks developed in accordance with the 7th national amended curriculum and to find implications for the development of a new revised curriculum to meet the needs of the knowledge-based society. Elementary school mathematics textbooks and accompanying practice books were analyzed. Teacher's manuals were also studied to examine the intentions of the textbook developers. The two major questions were sought. First, to what degree do elementary school mathematics textbooks and practice books match with the intentions of the national curriculum\ulcorner Second, how do elementary school mathematics textbooks and practice books facilitate student's learning for understanding mathematics\ulcorner The findings were as follows. First textbooks, practice books, and teacher's manuals appeared not to reflect the intentions of the 7th amended curriculum to the full extent. Second, characteristics and roles of textbooks, practice books, and teacher's manuals were not clearly defined and therefore, they were not very feasible for teaming for understanding mathematics. The recommendations for a new revised curriculum were suggested. First, regarding the contents presented in the textbooks, the idea of structure of subject matter need to be considered in order to help students to understand connections of concepts and relationships between concepts and functions in mathematics. Second, more ill defined problems should be presented to develop problem solving ability in real life contexts in students. Third, contents for relearning and enrichment need to be reorganized to reflect students' real ability. Fourth, uses of the concrete and the manipulative need to be more realistically suggested. Fifth, more prototypes of performance assessment tasks, scoring rubrics, and portfolios need to be presented in a more teacher-friendly manner. Sixth, characteristics and roles of textbooks and practice books need to be more discernible.
