  • Efficient and durable electrical energy storage is one of the major factors limiting the wide-spread adoption of renewable energy. Since lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were first commercialized in the early 1990s, LIBs have emerged as an important energy storage device for portable electronics. LIBs are very desirable because of their high energy storage per volume and per mass. However, LIBs with high energy and power as well as higher stability are needed for their use in a variety of energy storage applications such as MEMS devices, PDA, plug-in hybrids, all-electric vehicles and large scale utility systems. In this talk, I will discuss present energy perspective, especially energy storage and its role in renewable energy. After that I will discuss the recent advances in nanostructured materials and interface engineering that have led to the achievement of improved Li-ion batteries. Finally I will talk aboutcritical issues that need to be addressed to obtain further improvements in Li-ion batteries.

  • Acid rainwater samples were collected during 4 years from 1992 in Pusan area nearby seaside. Ionic composition of early and succeeding rainwater were investigated to identify emission sources. pH and Electronic Conductivity of samples were measured immediately after sampling. Major ion concentrations of rain samples were Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, NH4+, SO42-, NO3-, Cl- which were analyzed by ion Chromatography. 55% of early rainwater and 90% of succeeding rainwater were identified below pH 5.6. Because, Na+, K+, Ca2+ were washed mostly in early rainwater, as a result, pH values were increased by increasing rainfall amounts. It was studied that pH value was varied from ambient ion component, rainfall, and rain intensity. From the principal component analysis result, the dominant components of acid rainwater were Na+, K2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, the elements were contributed soil and marine source, the second components nuts -SO42-, SO4a-, NO3-, nuts -Ca2+ originated from man - made source.

  • One of the major degradation processes of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is corrosion of reinforced steel due to chloride attack. Severe environments, such as marine environment and exposure to de-icing salts, could accelerate the steel corrosion of RC structures through the chloride ion intrusion into concrete. In order to delay this degradation process, several kinds of admixtures have been used in concrete mix. In this study, effective diffusion coefficient of chloride ion ($D_{eff}$) and total passed charge of concrete with and without fly ash were measured using electrical method. It is found that fly ash concrete has much less chloride ion coefficient than ordinary concrete at later age. By analyzing the test results, $D_{eff}$ at 28 and 90 days was obtained as a function of water-binder ratio (W/B) and an equation for predicting $D_{eff}$ with age was proposed considering the decreasing rate of $D_{eff}$.

  • A novel battery model based on the manufacturer datasheet is proposed. According to this model, not only the steady state but also the dynamic charging performance of the Li-ion battery can be analyzed and evaluated. The major advantage of our model is that all the parameters can be directly obtained from the datasheet and no additional experiments are required. Moreover, the transition between charge and discharge stages was analyzed based on our model, and a novel Simulink module was built to predict the energy consumption of a battery-powered system. Experiments were carried out to verify the model accuracy. Although the new model was developed for the Li-ion battery, it is expected to be applicable to other batteries.

  • Reinforced concrete is a building material that is generally used in modern society. Securing the performance of reinforced concrete is directly connected to the durability and longevity of the building. One of the major factors that deteriorate the durability of concrete is harmful ion. Recently, the quality and improvement method of reinforced concrete for penetration of harmful ion has been studied. In this study, the bead type ion exchange resin is substituted for 0%, 3%, and 6% of the fine aggregate volume in the mortar. The speciments underwent underwater curing and were checked for compressive strengths of 3 days and 28 days. From the results of compressive strength, it can be seen that the higher the substitution ratio of the ion exchange resin, the lower the early strength and long-term strength development, especially the early strength development.

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been rapidly expanding from IT based applications to uses in electric vehicles (EVs), smart grids, and energy storage systems (ESSs), all of which require low cost, high energy density and high power density. The increasing demand for LIBs has resulted in increasing price of the lithium source, which is a major obstacle to wider application. To date, the possible depletion of lithium resources has become relevant, giving rise to the interest in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) as promising alternatives to LIBs. A lot of transition metal compounds based on conversion-alloying reaction have been extensively investigated to meet the requirement for the anodes with high energy density and long life-time. In-depth understanding the electrochemical reaction mechanisms for the transition metal compounds makes it promising negative anode for NIBs and provides feasible strategy for low cost and large-scale energy storage system in the near future.

  • With increasing interest in flexible electronic devices and wearable appliances, flexible lithium ion batteries are the most attractive candidates for flexible energy sources. During the last decade, many different kinds of flexible batteries have been reported. Although research of flexible lithium ion batteries is in its earlier stages, we have found that developing components that satisfy performance conditions under external deformation stress is a critical key to the success of flexible energy sources. Among the major components of the lithium ion battery, electrodes, which are connected to the current collectors, are gaining the most attention owing to their rigid and brittle character. In this mini review, we discuss candidate materials for current collectors and the previous strategies implemented for flexible electrode fabrication.

  • The fragmentation pattern of four hindered phenol antioxidants was investigated using ammonium and lithium ions as the additives for ionization. Due to different binding geometries and interactions, they underwent different characteristic fragmentation reactions providing useful complementary information for structural analysis of hindered phenol antioxidants. Ammonium ion adducts were fragmented successively until all t-butyl groups were lost in the form of isobutylene and allowed the estimation of the number of t-butyl groups present in the molecule. Lithium ion adducts produced fragment ions from major backbone cleavage, on the other hand, which provide more crucial information for the identification of detailed backbone structure.

  • The absorptions of Fe(Ⅲ), Tb(Ⅲ), Tl(Ⅰ), Ce(Ⅲ), Th(Ⅳ), and $UO_2^{2+}$ ions into the Dowex 50W-X2, 100-200 mesh resin were investigated by spectrophotometry to understand the abnormal strong absorption behavior of cations to cation exchange resins in concentrated HClO4. The distribution coefficients increase in the order : Tl(Ⅰ) < Fe(Ⅲ) < Tb(Ⅲ)∼Ce(Ⅲ) < $UO_2^{2+}$< Th(Ⅳ) and the order is interpreted in terms of the ratio of charge-to-ionic radius. The mole ratios of increment of $ClO_4^-$ ion absorption to metal ion absorption showed the same order as the distribution coefficients, which indicates that the electrostatic association between $ClO_4^-$ ion and metal ion plays a major role in the strong absorption.

  • Eight representative explosives (ammonium perchlorate (AP), ammonium nitrate (AN), trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), cyclonite (RDX), cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), and hexanitrostilbene (HNS)) were comprehensively analyzed with an ion trap mass spectrometer in negative ion mode using direct infusion electrospray ionization. MS/MS experiments were performed to generate fragment ions from the major parent ion of each explosive. Explosives in salt forms such as AP or AN provided cluster parent ions with their own anions. Explosives with an aromatic ring were observed as either $[M-H]^-$ for TNT and DNT or $[M]^{{\cdot}-}$ for HNS, while explosives without an aromatic ring such as RDX, HMX, and PETN were detected as an adduct ion with a formate anion, i.e., $[M+HCOO]^-$. These findings provide a guideline for the rapid and accurate detection of explosives once portable MS instruments become more readily available.
