  • Purpose The study examined the key factors influencing the formation mechanism of SNS addiction. Based on the use and gratification theory, we considered relationship maintenance, perceived enjoyment, and self-expression as main desires to induce SNS addiction. The characteristics of SNS users were also considered as major factors affecting SNS addiction. In particular, self-control and subjective well-beings were considered to be prevention factors that could reduce SNS addiction, while SNS relational intimacy was considered to be a facilitator that would increase SNS addiction. Design/Methodology/Approach A structural equation modeling (SEM) method was used to test the theoretical framework based on a sample of 224 Facebook users who have used it more than 6 months. Confirmation factor analysis was conducted to check the reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Findings Relationship maintenance had a significant effect on self-disclosure intention and SNS addiction, respectively. Perceived enjoyment was significantly related to self-disclosure intention, while it was insignificantly associated with SNS addiction. However, self-expression was not significantly related to both self-disclosure intention and SNS addiction. Consistent with our expectations, both self-control and subjective well-beings had negative effects on SNS addiction. The analysis results found that SNS relational intimacy was positively related to SNS addiction.

Methods : 720 people who voluntarily participated and agreed to fill out the questionnaire were randomly sampled. Smartphone addiction was measured using the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV), sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), anxiety symptoms were measured using the self-assessment anxiety scale (SAS), and depression symptoms were measured using the self-assessment depression scale (SDS). In addition, the age of each individual and the main function of smartphone use were also investigated. Results : The prevalence of smartphone addiction was higher among female students than male students (p<.05), while male students mainly played games and female students mainly used multimedia (video/music) viewing and social networking services (p<.05). In addition, male students showed a high association with smartphone addiction in the group where games were the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with anxiety symptoms (p<.05), but for female students, multimedia (video/music) Or, the group in which social networking service is the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with symptoms of anxiety and depression showed a high correlation with smartphone addiction (p<.05). Conclusion : It is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for providing customized solutions considering the characteristics of smartphone addicts.

  • Recently, in our society, the use of smartphones has been widespread and changed our lives positively; however, the excessive use of smartphones has also produced many side effects. In particular, we can see that the reckless use of smartphones has constantly increased smartphone addiction propensities. University students, too, show smartphone addiction propensities more and more gradually; therefore this study intends to perform research related with smartphone addiction propensities with university students as the subjects. Since it is more and more important to perform leisure activities to prevent smartphone addiction and reduce addiction propensities, it can be said that the research on the correlation between leisure activities and smartphone addiction propensities is significant. The major findings of the research are as follows: First, among the smartphone addiction propensities, their tolerance and disturbance of adaptive function were relatively higher than other factors. Second, overall smartphone addiction affects the variables of gender (male), school year (freshmen), economic leisure constraints, time leisure constraints, and the adequacy of travel behavior, sports behavior, media use behavior, reading behavior, volunteer work and religious behavior. The adequacy of the media use behavior variables showed the greatest impact.
