  • The excessive axial load occurred in an immovable zone of continuous welded rail(CWR) tracks threatens the security of running trains due to the track buckling in extreme hot summer. The influence factors, such as rail temperature for compressive stress, ballast resistance for track stiffness and initial imperfection of track for tracks irregularity are uncertain track parameters that are randomly varied by climate conditions, operating conditions and maintenance of track etc. So, buckling of CWR tracks has very high uncertainties. Therefore, applying the probabilistic approach method is essential in order to rationally consider the uncertainty and randomness of the various parameters. In this study, buckling sensitivity analysis was carried out with respect to the characteristics of probability distribution of lateral ballast resistance using the buckling probability evaluation system of CWR tracks developed by our research team.

  • Variable loads along the drive-train are attributed to frequent failures of gears, bearings, and other components. Wind parameters cannot be controlled and therefore any turbine load-reducing remedies must be established based on proper insights into the wind-turbine interactions. A novel control concept to performance optimization of wind turbines is presented. This proposed concept is based on analysis of the turbine status reflected in the SCADA data. Modern computational techniques are used to optimize performance of a wind turbine from tree basic perspectives: drive-train, power output, and power quality. The proposed approach demonstrates that gains in the metrics representing the three perspectives and the corresponding control goals can be significantly improved for any wind turbine. The solution is applicable different turbine types operating in different wind regimes, e.g., winds of different speeds and variability. Simple and transparent parameters allow an operator to determine a balance between the operations and maintenance, technical, business objectives. The proposed modeling framework was embedded in software. The software tool has been tested on the data collected from 1.5 MW wind turbines.

  • In this paper, statistical approach is undertaken to investigate the classification of wear debris which is the key function of objective assessment of wear debris morphology. Wear tests are run to produce various kinds of wear debris. The images of wear debris from wear tests are captured with image acquisition equipment. By thresholding, two-dimensional binary images of wear debris are made and, then, morphological parameters are used to quantify the images of debris. Parametric and nonparametric discriminant method are employed to classify wear debris into predefined wear conditions. It is demonstrated that classification accuracy of parametric and nonparametric discriminant method is similar. The selected use of morphological parameters by stepwise discriminant analysis can generally improve the classification accuracy of parametric and nonparametric discriminant method.

  • In this paper an extension to the method for the identification of mechanical parameters of nonlinear systems proposed in Breccolotti and Materazzi (2007) for MDoF systems is presented. It can be used for damage identification purposes when damage modifies the linear characteristics of the investigated structure. It is based on the following two main features: the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the response probabilistic properties of the system when it is excited by external Gaussian loads; and a model updating technique that minimizes the differences between the response of the actual system and that of a parametric system used to identify the unknown parameters. Numerical analysis, that simulate virtual experimental tests, are used in the paper to show the capabilities of the method and to analyse the conditions required for its application.

  • Dynamic stability of graded nonlocal nano-dimension plates on elastic substrate due to in-plane periodic loads has been researched via a novel 3- unknown plate theory based on exact position of neutral surface. Proposed theory confirms the shear deformation effects and contains lower field components in comparison to first order and refined 4- unknown plate theories. A modified power-law function has been utilized in order to express the porosity-dependent material coefficients. The equations of nanoplate have been represented in the context of Mathieu-Hill equations and Chebyshev-Ritz-Bolotin's approach has been performed to derive the stability boundaries. Detailed impacts of static/dynamic loading parameters, nonlocal constant, foundation parameters, material index and porosities on instability boundaries of graded nanoscale plates are researched.

  • Increasing usage of tank cars and their intrinsic instability due to sloshing of contents have caused growing maintenance costs as well as more frequent hazards and defects like derailment and fatigue of bogies and axels. Therefore, varieties of passive solutions have been represented to improve dynamical parameters. In this task, assuming 22 degrees of freedom, dynamic analysis of partially filled tank car traveling on a curved track is investigated. In order to consider stochastic geometry of track; irregularities have been derived randomly by Mont Carlo method. More over the fluid tank model with 1 degree of freedom is also presented by equivalent mechanical approach in terms of pendulum. An active suspension system for described car is designed by using linear quadratic optimal control theory to decrease destructive effects of fluid sloshing. Eventually, the performance of the active suspension system has been compared with that of the passive one and a study is carried out on how active suspension may affect the dynamical parameters such as displacements and Nadal's derailment index.

  • A feasibility study on the characterization of incipient insulator failure for distribution fault prediction is presented. In this study, real distribution data was collected and analyzed to isolate incipient failure signatures or parameters which were expected to show distinct behaviors before and after failure incident. Several signal analysis methods were applied to isolate the parameters and a new strategy of analysis, the event-date concept, was also applied to find a relationship between non-harmonic and high frequency signal activities and imminent insulator failures.

  • This paper presents a comparison of the black-box and the physics based derived gray-box models for subspace identification for structures subjected to support-excitation. The study compares the damage detection capabilities of both these methods for linear time invariant (LTI) systems as well as linear time-varying (LTV) systems by extending the gray-box model for time-varying systems using short-time windows. The numerically simulated IASC-ASCE Phase-I benchmark building has been used to compare the two methods for different damage scenarios. The efficacy of the two methods for the identification of stiffness parameters has been studied in the presence of different levels of sensor noise to simulate on-field conditions. The proposed extension of the gray-box model for LTV systems has been shown to outperform the black-box model in capturing the variation in stiffness parameters for the benchmark building.

  • This paper considers a Bayesian approach to determine an optimal replacement policy for a repairable system with warranty period. The mathematical formula of the expected cost rate per unit time is obtained for two cases : RFRW(renewing free-replacement warranty) and RPRW(renewing pro-rata warranty). When the failure time is Weibull distribution with uncertain parameters, a Bayesian approach is established to formally express and update the uncertain parameters for determining an optimal replacement policy. Some numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

  • Downcoiler is one of the major facilities in hot strip mill operation. The key to good coiling is having good equipment, modem control systems, excellent maintenance and an understanding of coiling process. Therefore, this study aims to develop a program that is useful for calculating machine design parameters and simulating coiling process. In this study, the pinching and coiling mechanism of the downcoiler was thoroughly studied and some of operational factors and their effects on the coiling process were investigated. The software was developed to estimate engineering parameters for coiler component design and to determine optimal setting values for successful coiling operation. In order to check the accuracy and usefulness of the developed software, the simulation of the downcoiler in $\#2$ Hot Strip Mill in Pohang Works was performed. The simulation results suggested that the set-up value for unit tension could be lowered. Test coiling operation by using the lowered set-up value for unit tension resulted in much more successful coiling in the aspect of strip quality and power consumption.
