  • This research was undertaken to prove the relationship between street mall activation and architectural plan design. The research methodology was established based on the analysis of data of two existing street malls in Korea (Western Dome & LaFesta) and theoretical studies of outdoor space design. The findings from this study are the following: First, building blocks with segments in every 50m or so are ideal for detailed communication between visitors and building contents. Second, the ratio of width of main corridor and building height should be less than 1 to provide intimate feel and keep visitors' attention concentrated in the facility. Third, store unit should have more storefronts to be exposed more to passers-by and lead more pedestrian traffic. Fourth, shape of store unit would rather be wide and shallow, instead of narrow and deep, to have more exposure to the central corridor. Fifth, the building block of the busiest(most expensive) area that is usually at the main entrance area of street mall should be flexible to fit more smaller units to maximize the profitability. Sixth, the main entrance of store should face the main pedestrian corridor to induce the influx of visitors. Lastly seventh, anchor tenant that has strong name recognition is usually located on basement or higher level to induce pedestrian traffic into the mall, key tenants that are strong and familiar brand names should be located at the corner of building block with spacing to attract visitors, provide even distribution of traffic, and support wayfinding, and local tenant should be located at small units along the central corridor or remainder spaces occurred from building core layout.

  • Most of the recent studies on Seowon have been done just in terms of classification of general kinds of building layout, so there are a few things ignored such as the way they were arranged, the compositional process of buildings etc.. Although the classification of types itself is meaningful in the study on Korean traditional architecture, there has been some limitation in deep analysis of each style. The aim of this study is to find out the characteristics of the building layout and space composition of Dodong-Seowon with the viewpoint of the process of changes of it during the time through the survey and analysis on both the existing site layout and the measuring unite of scale applied to the original construction of each building. Hierarchical order scheme was considered in the design of the space proceeding from the entrance to the main space and of the building position, axis and the roof heights of buildings.

  • This paper presents a case of community participatory neighborhood park design. The site, Yangji park, is located in Sandang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul and the area is about 1,870m. Neighborhood park is defined as an outdoor space which is close to people´s home and is considered to be their own, because of the residents´ collective responsibility, family association, and frequent shared use. It is a place for pleasant rest area for community, sharing a sense of nature and retaining a sense of tradition and culture which is disappearing in a city. It is related to the daily life of the people near the site and becomes a place to let the community increase dialogue and understanding between people. On the other hand, participatory design is a design in which people participate in the design process. Thus people can understand the project well, present their opinions better, and reconcile conflicts between the different interests of people. This design applied a community participatory design method to design a neighborhood park. The major strategies for participatory design were ´workshop´, ´card game´, ´walking site´, ´interview´, and ´questionnaire´. Eight workshops were performed for the participation design. The major spaces and facilities elected by participants were the ´main entrance plaza´, ´entrance symbol space´, ´children´s ´playground´, ´multipurpose sport ground´, ´grass land´, ´foot-pressure area´, ´spaces symbolizing a rock mountain and an old well´, ´space for youth´, ´a pavilion´, etc. From this selection, design concept alternatives were generated by participants. The aster plan was developed from these design alternatives with the help of landscape architects. It was revised by ist visits and community discussions. People were also involved in the construction process and left their own works, such as hand prints, on the site. After construction, residents continued to maintain the park by themselves. As a result, It was found that participatory design was very effective for people´s satisfaction and sustainable park management. By involving people more in the process they developed a sense of community, a sense of ownership, and attachment to the place. In conclusion, it is suggested that we need to develop an effective people´s participation method to Korean society.

  • Today's public libraries in communities are on the processes of changes to integrate information and communication technology into traditional library system in order to support current users' demands for the new digital era. The purpose of this study is to examine the changing characters on space design and space uses of community based public libraries by conducting case studies of three branch libraries which were built after 2004 in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the United States. As the conclusion of this research, the findings of the case studies are utilized as basic data for planning and design guidelines for public libraries as community resources. The study summarizes the characteristics of space design and space uses in public libraries as follow; first, the floor plans of small-scale public libraries are open visually as well as spatially. The space organization of the libraries is arranged by potential noise levels, as placing noisy spaces near the entrance halls and quiet spaces at the back. Main book shelves are located in the middle of the library buildings, while seats are arranged along the window sides. By placing various kinds of furniture in open reading areas, library users can select different types of seats and tables for their comforts. Second. the survey of observation also finds that a large number of users often use library computers and personal computers to connect the internet at the libraries. These personal computer users who are new user group in community based libraries preferred to sit in casual study areas and individual tables with one or two seats only. Third, the libraries, in addition, develop and provide various programs and events for people in communities. Especially, the programs for children, the elderly and new comers from the abroad are well prepared, thus provide opportunities for them to visit the libraries in regular bases. The survey finds that family entertainment and leisure activities are the important parts of the program as well as renting music CD and movie DVD are also important reasons for people to come. Thus, the libraries prepare high quality children's space and CD shelves near the entrance hall.

This study analyzed residing application specific character of design guide line that is presented to architects in general planning laying stress on plan only of 'Bongmu-dong town house' and design agreement of by architectural result that appear analyze. Result that analyze is as following: 1) Confer in 18 plan contents and integrate design or was adjusted. Being main conduct and unit plan and residing only in plan many negotiations accomplish. Architect who confer most Designs of 5 architects is 'Jean Michel Wilmott' and 'Shigeru Ban' 2) contents that confer much in plan main conduct and unit generation were details plan. Contents that is conferred with many architects are about door/core/rooftop be and asked a question about proper size of entrance. Negotiation about size was expose to the tribe of knowledge about element that do furniture and detail of necessary each space in life style of our country. We must present furnitures or detail element that appear by emotion of our country and detailed item of furnitures' size etc.. in guide line. It is immediate that creation of guide that architects can approach easily for lacking abroad architects of interests by code difference in each country is pressing. 3) In residing plan 4 architects of 5 architects applied similarly guide line in design. Most architects look by active support that make synthetic housing complex. and this is construed that act positively to make by unified residing. That plan of woods or landscape architecture and security of green area space are thing to approach on 'Environment-friendly mode of life residing only' that is general planning subject of 'Bongmu-dong town house'. 4) common question items of architects guide line of though is refered definitely when make out effective interests plan. • The aesthetics of current dermatology clinics are the main space of dermatology, which is gradually becoming an area of specialty. Paths requiring spatial transition due to the expansion of treatment field in dermatology clinics are currently emerging, meaning that the duty to provide medical and aesthetic environment with high spatial connection must be accompanied. Contrary to past clinics where only functional aspects were emphasized, current clinics require a differentiated environment that considers both aspects of function and aesthetics, centered on the patient. The purpose of this research in this perspective is to study the efficient connection between dermatology and aesthetics, while also analyzing identity factors to indicate design factors differentiated from other functional spaces, to apply them as preliminary data for the planning of dermatology clinics. Based on the above, six dermatology clinics located in Seoul were designated for case studies through field studies. Overall, Aesthetics connected to dermatology clinics legally must have separate business registrations and have alternative entrance ways. Currently however, there were many cases where entrance, waiting, reception and receipt were not separated. there were efforts to partially display identities when analyzing design factors that formed the identity of dermatology clinics. However, there were insufficient cases where visual communication factors such as a clinic's spatial identity, logo, signing system, and applied products were integrated into a coherent theme. At this point when dermatology clinics are becoming brands, all fields must merge for integrated identity effects that go beyond the boundaries of contemporary H.I, to clearly display their identity with the clinics' professional image and consistent concept.
