  • Unsteady flow simulations of complete helicopter configurations were conducted, and the flow fields and the aerodynamic interferences between the main rotor, fuselage, and tail rotor were investigated. For these simulations, a three-dimensional flow solver based on unstructured meshes was used, coupled with an overset mesh technique to handle relative motion among those components. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a UH-60A complete helicopter configuration at high-speed and low-speed forward flight conditions, and the unsteady airloads on the main rotor blade were compared to available flight test data and other calculated results. The results showed that the fuselage changed the rotor inflow distribution in the main rotor blade airloads. Such unsteady vibratory airloads were produced on the fuselage, which were nearly in-phase with the blade passage over the fuselage. The flow solver was then applied to the simulation of a generic complete helicopter configuration at various flight conditions, and the results were compared with those of the CAMRAD-II comprehensive analysis code. It was found that the main rotor blades strongly interact with a pair of disk-vortices at the outer edge of the rotor disk plane, which leads to high pulse airloads on the blade, and these airloads behave differently depending on the specific flight condition.

  • This paper describes the conceptual design of medium size helicopter rotor system. Based on assumed design requirements, trade-off study for rotor configuration has been conducted in terms of rotor tip speed, disk loading, blade area, solidity, etc for estimated primary mission gross weight. For the main rotor, four-blade and five-blade rotors are studied with the conventional tail rotor. The performance analysis for baseline configuration is conducted using a helicopter performance analysis program. The analysis shows design results satisfy the design requirements.

  • In this study, the internal structural design, dynamic characteristics and load analyses of the small scaled rotor blade required for LCH(Light Civil Helicopter) main rotor wind tunnel test were carried out. The test is performed to evaluate the aerodynamic performance and noise characteristics of the LCH main rotor system. Therefore, the Mach-scale technique was appled to design the small scaled blade to simulate the equivalent aerodynamic characteristics as the full scale rotor system. It is necessary to increase the rotor speed to maintain the same blade tip speed as the full scale blade. In addition, the blade weight, section stiffness, and natural frequency were scaled according to the Mach-type scaling factor(${\lambda}$). For the design of skin, spar, torsion box, which are the main components of the blade, carbon and glass fiber composite materials were adopted, and composite materials are prepreg types that can be supplied domestically. The KSec2D program was used to evaluate the section stiffness of the blade. Also, structural loads and dynamic characteristics of the Mach scale blade were investigated through the comprehensive rotorcraft analysis program CAMRADII.

  • An aerodynamic calculation in hover of KUH main rotor blade is performed using a three-dimensional unstructured hybrid mesh viscous flow solver. The flow solver utilizes a vertex-centered finite-volume scheme that is based on the Roe's flux-difference splitting with an implicit Jacobi/Gauss-Seidel time integration. The eddy viscosity are estimated by the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation turbulence model. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique is used for efficient capturing of the tip vortex. Calculations are performed at several operating conditions with varying collective pitch setting for KUH main rotor blade in hover. Good agreements are obtained between the present and other results using HOST and CAMRAD II in overall rotor performance. It is demonstrated that the present vertex-centered flow solver is an efficient and accurate tool for the assessment of rotor performance in hover.

  • This paper focuses on the effect of structural coupling in the behavior of composite rotor blade. We have searched for bending, extension and shear coupling term with the ply angle of rotor blade and the dynamic behavior of rotor blade for each coupling term. It was found that natural frequency increases as the rotating speed of rotor blade increases. In the couplings with feathering, bending coupling is main parameter, because bending coupling term is larger than shear . Also, the couplings with feathering is less effective in 0$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$, of ply angle and more variable at blade tip.

  • This study describes optimization methods for adjustment of helicopter main rotor tracking and balancing (RTB). RTB is a essential process for helicopter operation and maintenance. Linear and non-linear models were developed with past RTB test results for estimation of RTB adjustment. Then global and sequential optimization methods were applied to the each of models. Utilization of the individual optimization method with each model is hard to fulfill the RTB requirements because of different characteristics of each blade. Therefore an ensemble model was used to integrate every estimated adjustment result, and an adaptive method was also applied to adjustment values of the linear model to update for next estimations. The goal of this developed RTB adjustment optimization program is to achieve the requirements within 2 run. Additional tests for comparison of weight factor of the ensemble model are however necessary.

  • The rotor blade is a key component that generates the lift, thrust, and control forces required for helicopter flight by the torque transmitted through the hub and the blade pitch angle control, and should be designed to factor vibration characteristics so that there is no risk of resonance with structural safety. In this study, the structural design of the main rotor blade for MPUH(Multi-Purpose Unmanned Helicopter) was conducted and the sectional stiffness measurement of the fabricated blade was performed. The evaluation of the vibration characteristics of the main rotor system was then conducted factoring the measured stiffness distribution. The interior of the rotor blade comprised of the skin, spar, and torsion box, and carbon and glass fiber composites were applied. The Ksec2D program was applied to predict the stiffness of blade, and the results were compared to the measured data. CAMRADII, a comprehensive rotorcraft analysis program, was applied to investigate the natural frequency trends and resonance risks due to the rotor rotation.

  • Tilt-rotor aircraft can be used in various fields because they have the capabilities of the vertical take-off and landing and the high-speed cruise flight. In the present study, the flow analysis of a tilt-rotor aircraft is conducted at various tilt angles. The lift and drag forces of the tilt-rotor aircraft are obtained and the wakes by the rotor-blade are visualized. The result shows that the rotor-blade affects the lift force in a hovering mode and the main wing has an influence on the lift force in a cruise mode. Additional thrust is required at the tilt angle of around 40 degree due to the least lift force. The drag force is dependent on the rotor-blade at overall tilt angles. The minus drag force appears between the tilt angles of 90 degree and 55 degree. Also, the drag force is dramatically increased at the other tilt angles. The wake by rotor-blade affects the flow around the fuselage of the tilt-rotor aircraft at the tilt angles of 75 degree and 60 degree.
