A Trade-Off between the Efficiency, Ripple and Volume of a DC-DC Converter

  • In space qualified DC-DC converters, optimization of the following electrical characteristics is of greater interest in comparison with other specifications; power loss/efficiency, output voltage ripple and volume/weight. The main goal of this paper is to present an appropriate solution for optimizing the above mentioned characteristics. For this purpose, a comprehensive power loss model of a DC-DC converter is fully developed. Proper models are also demonstrated for assessment of the output voltage ripple and the utilized transformer volume as the bulkiest component in a DC-DC converter. In order to provide a test bed for evaluation of the proposed models, a 50W push-pull DC-DC converter is designed and implemented. Finally, a novel cost function with three assigned weight functions is proposed in order to have a trade-off among the power loss, the output voltage ripple and the utilized transformer volume of the converter. The cost function is optimized for applications in which volume has the highest priority in comparison with power loss and ripple. The optimization results show that the transformer volume can be decreased by up to 51% and this result is verified by experimental results. The developed models and algorithms in this paper can be used for other DC-DC converter topologies with some minor modifications.

Diagnosis Method for Power Transformer using Intelligent Algorithm based on ELM and Fuzzy Membership Function (ELM 기반의 지능형 알고리즘과 퍼지 소속함수를 이용한 유입변압기 고장진단 기법)

  • Power transformers are an important factor for power transmission and cause fatal losses if faults occur. Various diagnostic methods have been applied to predict the failure and to identify the cause of the failure. Typical diagnostic methods include the IEC diagnostic method, the Duval diagnostic method, the Rogers diagnostic method, and the Doernenburg diagnostic method using the ratio of the main gas. However, each diagnostic method has a disadvantage in that it can't diagnose the state of the power transformer unless the gas ratio is within the defined range. In order to solve these problems, we propose a diagnosis method using ELM based intelligent algorithm and fuzzy membership function. The final diagnosis is performed by multiplying the result of diagnosis in the four diagnostic methods (IEC, Duval, Rogers, and Doernenburg) by the fuzzy membership values. To show its effectiveness, the proposed fault diagnostic system has been intensively tested with the dissolved gases acquired from various power transformers.

The Experimental Study on Seismic Capacity of 154 kV & 345 kV Main Transformer Bushings (154 kV 및 345 kV 주변압기 부싱의 내진성능 시험 연구)

  • In this study, seismic performance of bushings and their connection parts was analyzed by performing shaking table tests for various types of bushings widely used as auxiliary equipment of main transformers in domestic substations. As a result of the seismic tests of five types of 154 kV bushings according to the manufacturers, all the bushings secured the structural integrity even at the acceleration of 1.4 g and it was found that leakage of insulating oil didn't occur. Also, the average acceleration amplification rate at the upper part of the bushings was about 2.5 to 3.0 times higher than the lower one. On the other hand, when a representative 345 kV bushing was subjected to the seismic test, the structural integrity was secured even at 1.0 g acceleration similar to the design earthquake load level, but in this test, leakage of insulating oil occurred. However, when a stiffener restricting the connection of the bushing is installed in the same 345 kV bushing, the displacement of the bushing connection is controlled and the stiffener prevent the oil from leaking even at the acceleration of the designed seismic level.

  • The two-transformer full bridge (TTFB) PWM converter has two transformers which act as the output inductor as well as the main transformer, i.e. as the forward and the flyback transformer. Although the doubled leakage inductor of the TTFB makes it easier to achieve the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the lagging leg switch along the wide load range, it instigates a serious voltage ringing in the secondary rectifier diodes, which would require the dissipative snubber circuit, cause the serious power dissipation, and increase the voltage stress across those diodes. To overcome these problems, a, new lossless diode-clamp rectifier (LDCR) is employed as the output rectifier, which helps the voltage across rectifier diodes to be clamped on a half the output voltage $(V_o/2)$ or the output voltage $(V_o)$. Therefore, no dissipative snubber for rectifier diodes is needed and a high efficiency as well as low noise output voltage can be realized. The operations, analysis and design consideration of proposed converter are presented in this paper. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, experimental results from a 425W, 385-170Vdc prototype for the plasma display panel (PDP) sustaining power module (PSPM) are presented.

  • On AC railway systems, the neutral sections are installed in front of substations and sectioning posts in order to avoid crash between power that have differing phases. In case railway vehicles pass through these neutral sections, it is necessary for them to switch to coasting driving by notch-off. This may reduce speed of the vehicles, resulting lowered train operation efficiency. The usage of automatic power switching systems makes it possible to pass neutral sections at notch-on, enhancing operation efficiency so that it is appropriate for high-speed railway applications. This paper analyzed inrush current of main transformer that installed on the train while passing through the neutral section using the simulator.

A Novel Soft-Switching Full-Bridge PWM Converter with an Energy Recovery Circuit

  • This paper proposes a new phase-shift full-bridge DC-DC converter by applying energy recovery circuits to a conventional full-bridge DC-DC converter in plasma display panel applications. The converter can achieve soft-switching in main-switches by an extra auxiliary resonant network even with the wide operating condition of both output load and input voltage. The un-coupled design guidelines to the main bridge-leg component parameters for soft-switching operation contribute to conduction loss reduction in the transformer primary side leading to efficiency improvement. The auxiliary switches in the resonant network also operate in zero-current switching. This paper analyzes the operation modes of the proposed scheme and presents the key design guidelines through steady state analysis. Also, the paper verifies the validity of the circuits by hardware experiments with a 1kW DC/DC converter prototype.

  • Recently, There have been many attempts to optimize energy usage in buildings and houses using Information Technology(IT) and the typical implementation can be found in Intelligent Building and Zero Energy Building. These kinds of buildings need to forecast the building loads, estimate the capacity requirement for power supply, and decide the capacity of the main transformer of the building. Currently, the capacity of the main transformer has been decided just using typical load estimation method not considering the load characteristics and patterns. In this paper, we propose a new load estimation method considering the load characteristics and patterns of the builiding. The proposed method was applied to actual mail center and verified the feasibility of application to actual design of buildings.

  • This paper proposes a hardware implementation of intelligent electronic device for power transformer protection. And proposes an advanced main protection algorithm by voltage-current trend and flux-differential current slope characteristics. The secondary protection functions include UR, OCGR, OVR, and W etc. The main board of IED is based on the DSP chip TMS32C32 processor The IED was tested with relaying signals obtained for EMTP simulation package.

  • This study proposes a new type of active-clamp forward-flyback converter with two transformers that operate in forward and flyback modes during on and off times, respectively, instead of not using an output inductor. The main switch can be turned on with zero-voltage switching (ZVS) using the leakage inductance of the transformer and the output capacitor of the main switch. The leakage inductance should be increased to ZVS. However, the ringing between the leakage inductance of the transformer and the parasitic output capacitance of the secondary side rectifier switches results in a serious voltage spike. A forward-flyback converter employing auxiliary inductor and auxiliary diode is proposed to overcome the problem. The operational principles are analyzed in detail and validated through experiments with a 385 V-to-53 V/37 A prototype.

  • This paper describes the numerical simulations in the cooling of the radiator in a distribution transformer. The aim of this work is the cooling optimization of the transformer by CFD simulations. A clear understanding of the cooling pattern in a radiator which is a main heat remover in the power transformer is essential for optimizing the radiator design increasing the thermal efficiency. In this paper we study the heat transfer and fluid flow in a 3-phase 400kVA transformer. The plate radiators of this transformer become wrinkled (corrugated radiator) and there are filled with transformer oil. The oil is circulated due to the natural convection driven by buoyancy effects through radiators so that the ultimate cooling medium is the surrounding air. In the design of transformers, it is of interest to minimize the cost and size of radiators. The obtained results show the temperature and flow distributions and the possibility to optimize the transformer with 3-dimensional CFD models using FLUENT.
