  • The in visto inhibitory activities of essential oils of the Rosmarinus officinalis as well as its main constituents were evaluated against antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pneumoniae, Salmonella enteritidis and S. typhimurium. The essential oil fraction of R. officinalis and its main components, 1,8-cineole and camphor, exhibited significant inhibitory activities against most of the tested strains in this study, with MICs(minimum inhibitory concentrations) racing from 0.5mg/ml to 16mg/ml. The total oil fraction showed higher activity than its main components, 1,8-cineole and camphor against S. aureus strains. No remarkable differences were evident between MICs of the susceptible and resistant strains of S. aureus. Among the tested strains, S. pneumoniae CCARM 3523, the resistant strain to norfloxacin, oxacillin and erythromycin exhibited significantly lower sensitivity to the tested oils than antibiotic-susceptible strain. The oils revealed mostly higher inhibitory activity against S. typhimurium than against S. enteritidis.

  • To develop a new natural antibiotics from Koran plant resources for dealing with the current situation regarding the rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogen, the in vitro inhibitory activities of essential oils from the young leaves of Glehnia littoralis (Umbelliferae) as well as its main constituents were evaluated against susceptible and resistant species of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The essential oil fraction of G. littoralis and its main components, $\alpha-and\;\beta-pinene$, exhibited significant inhibitory activities against the antibiotic-susceptible and resistant strains of S. pneumoniae, with MICs (minimum inhibiting concentrations) ranging from 4.0mg/ml to 16mg/ml. No remarkable differences were shown between the susceptible and resistant strains. Moreover, the disk diffusion test disclosed that these inhibitory activities were dosedependent. Furthermore, data from the checkerboard titer test with FICIs (fractional inhibiting concentration indices) from 0.15 to 0.28 indicated synergisms between norfloxacin and $\alpha-or\;{\beta}-pinene$ in activity against S. pneumoniae KCCM49629 and S. pneumoniae CCARM4059.

  • The paper deals with three main topics: a) the definition of System Thermal-Hydraulics (SYS TH), b) a historical outline for SYS TH and, c) the description of elements for reflection when planning research projects or improvement activities, this last topic being the main reason for the paper. Distinctions between basic thermal-hydraulics and computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD) on the one side and SYS TH on the other side are considered under the first topic; stakeholders in the technology are identified. The proposal of Interim Acceptance Criteria for Emergency Core Cooling Systems in 1971 by US NRC (AEC at the time) is recognized as the starting date or the triggering event for SYS TH (second topic). The complex codes and the main experimental programs (list provided in the paper) constitute the pillars for SYS TH. Caution or warning statements are introduced in advance when discussing the third topic: a single person (or a researcher) has little to no possibility, or capability, of streamlining the forthcoming investments or to propose a roadmap for future activities. Nevertheless, the ambitious attempt to foresee developments in this area has been pursued without constraints connected with the availability of funds and with industrial benefits or interests. Demonstrating the acceptability of current SYS TH limitations and training in the application of those codes are mentioned as the main challenges for forthcoming research activities.

  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) is a perennial that has been used for medicinal purposes from the ancient times and valerian preparations including root and rhizome extracts are known to possess a variety of biological activities such as anticonvulsant, antidepressant, sleep aid, tranquilizer, and anti-HIV activities. Main components of the extracts were classified according to the structural features. Importantly, one of the main components, isovaleramide, has drawn our attention due to the concise structure, broad spectrum, and low toxicities. The general aspects including generation of this interesting molecule, a variety of activities, pharmacokinetic properties, derivatization, and fusion with other known drugs were described. Isovaleramide has been isolated from valerian probably as an isolation artifact after treatment of ammonia to prepare ammoniated tincture, and is known to exhibit anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, sedative, and sleep aid activities without distinct side effects such as excessive sedation and decreasing muscle tone. It was also found to be well absorbed into the circulation system without specific cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The derivatives of isovaleramide, valpromide, valrocemide and valnoctamide were also briefly discussed.

  • This Paper analyzed simultaneous activities of the time use survey by Korea National Statistical Office to use data mining's association rule. The survey of National Statistical Office in 1999 considered general analysis for main activities like that personal care(eating), employment and study, leisure, travel by purpose. But if we use the association rule, we can found the ratio of simultaneous activities at the same time. And also we can found the probability that another activities practise if we act one particular activity. Using this association rule of data mining we can do more developed and analytical sociological study.

  • This paper studied the present condition of social welfare activities of Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City in order to activate the social welfare services of women agricultural organizations. The main results are as follows; First, the general characteristics of the respondents in this study are forty or fifty years of age with above high school education with main income source of agriculture and middle class women living in agricultural communities more than 10 years. Second, considering the present and future planned activities of the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City this study finds that there is high expectation of helping poor people and joining voluntary services. Third, the members of the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City have actively participated in the local welfare service programs however, there is significant difference among people according to the age, living standard and joining period. Fourth, out of social welfare activities managed by the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City the welfare service activities for old people and local community are most active and the participants in the welfare service activities for women and the youngsters are small. Thus, according to this study the Living Condition Improving Committee of Kimpo City should consider the following three points in order to activate the social welfare service activities; First, as the members are expecting to expand the individual activities and to enhance the private improvement, the social welfare service activities should meet with the demands to improve self satisfaction of the participants. Second, new programs should be developed after reviewing the current programs in order to meet with the need of the members. Third, as the committee has not established a network system with government administrative organizations and relating institutions, and as its activities are concentrated in particular areas the committee should establish a new system to provide more efficient services in line with the cooperation with public organization and welfare resource suppliers.
