As part of the SPVS (Short-Period Variability Survey) which is a wide-field $(90'{\times}60')$ photometric monitering program at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy (BOAO), we performed V band time-series CCD photometric observations ofthe young open cluster NGC 129 for 11 nights between October 12, 2004 and November 3, 2005 using the 155mm refractor equipped with $3K{\times}2K$ CCD camera. From the observation we obtained 2400 V band CCD frames and color-magnitude diagram of the cluster. To transform instrumental magnitude to standard magnitude, we applied ensemble normalization technique to all observed time-series data. After the photometric reduction process, we examined variations of 9537 stars. As a result, sixty six of the new variable stars were discovered. To determine the periods of the sevariables, we used DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) and phase-matching technique. According to light curve shape, period, amplitude and the position on a C-M diagram, we classified these variables as 9 SPB type, 9 ${\delta}$ Scuti type, 29 eclipsing, 17 long term variables. However, two of them were not classified. From this study, we learned that small telescopes could be a very useful tool to observe variable stars in the open cluster in survey program.
In this paper, we propose the prediction search algorithm for block matching using the temporal/spatial correlation of the video sequence and the renter-biased property of motion vectors The proposed algorithm determines the location of a better starting point for the search of an exact motion vector using the point of the smallest SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) value by the predicted motion vector from the same block of the previous frame and the predictor candidate pint in each search region and the predicted motion vector from the neighbour blocks of the current frame. And the searching process after moving the starting point is processed a adaptive search pattern according to the magnitude of motion vector Simulation results show that PSNR(Peak-to-Signal Noise Ratio) values are improved up to the 0.75dB as depend on the video sequences and improved about 0.05∼0.34dB on an average except the FS (Full Search) algorithm.

In this paper, an effective method of stereo image reconstruction through the regularized adaptive disparity estimation is proposed. Althougth the conventional adaptive disparity estimation method can sharply improve the PSNR of a reconstructed stereo image, but some problems of overlapping between the matching windows and disallocation of the matching windows can be occurred, because the matching window size changes adaptively in accordance with the magnitude of feature values. Accordingly, in thia paper, a new regularized adaptive disparity estimation technique is proposed. That is, by regularizing the estimated disparity vector with the neughboring disparity vectors, problems of the conventional adaptive disparity estimated scheme might be solved, and also the predicted stereo image can be more effectively reconstructed. From some experiments using the CCETT'S stereo image pairs of 'Man' and 'Claude', it is analyzed that the proposed disparity estimation scheme can improve PSNRs of the reconstructed images to 10.89dB, 6.13dB for 'Man' and 1.41dB, 0.81dB for 'Claude' by comparing with those of the conventional pixel-based and adaptive estimation method, respectively.
The penetration of an electro-magnetic wave through an aperture in a cylindrical structure with a center dielectric-rod is investgated. By using a standard mode matching procedure, the electrical and magnetic fields in a cavity are determined as a function of position inside the cavity and frequency of the incident field. For the given parameters, computed data are obtained and the results exhibited in form of amplitude curves of the nor malized field and energy densities of functions of position and frequency. Depending on the increase of the relative dielectric constant of center dielectric-rod, the resonance frequecies of the cavity vary as the cavity size decrease. The stored electro-magnetic energy varies very rapidly as a function of position inside the cavity and of the source frequency. Its peak value can be two orders of magnitude greater than the incident energy density. The frequencies where the peaks occur can be identified approximately as the resonance frequencies of the cavity.
The discrete Gaussian-Hermite moment (DGHM) is a global feature representation method that can be applied to square images. We propose a modified DGHM (MDGHM) method and an MDGHM-based scale-invariant feature transform (MDGHM-SIFT) descriptor. In the MDGHM, we devise a movable mask to represent the local features of a non-square image. The complete set of non-square image features are then represented by the summation of all MDGHMs. We also propose to apply an accumulated MDGHM using multi-order derivatives to obtain distinguishable feature information in the third stage of the SIFT. Finally, we calculate an MDGHM-based magnitude and an MDGHM-based orientation using the accumulated MDGHM. We carry out experiments using the proposed method with six kinds of deformations. The results show that the proposed method can be applied to non-square images without any image truncation and that it significantly outperforms the matching accuracy of other SIFT algorithms.
We present the ultraviolet (UV) properties of early type galaxies (ETGs) in clusters. We obtained a cluster catalogue from Yoon et al.(2008) based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS) DR5 in the redshift range of 0.05 < z <0.10. After matching sample galaxies in clusters with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) GR5, we have classified the morphologies of ETGs by UV-optical colour distributions and investigated them in terms of the ranks in magnitude in a cluster and in clustocentric distance. It has recently been suggested theoretically that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) show a strong UV upturn than non-BCGs, but we find that the difference between them is not significant. Moreover, to our surprise, it appears that density (environment) does not play any significant role to the UV properties. consequent of internal galaxy processes rather than that of environmental processes.

We present a simple design method of velocity-matched traveling-wave (TW) electrode with periodic capacitive loads. Once matching impedance and optical phase velocity are defined, the width and separation of coplanarstrip (CPS) and the magnitude and period of capacitive load are determined analytically. Calculation results of velocity-matched TW electrodes on GaAs substrates show bandwidths of more than 100 GHz.
In this paper we present an efficient solution to rotation?invariant boundary image matching. Computing the rotation-invariant distance between image time-series is a time-consuming process since it requires a lot of Euclidean distance computations for all possible rotations. In this paper we propose a novel solution that significantly reduces the number of distance computations using the envelope-based lower bound. To this end, we first present how to construct a single envelope from a query sequence and how to obtain a lower bound of the rotation-invariant distance using the envelope. We then show that the single envelope-based lower bound can reduce a number of distance computations. This approach, however, may cause bad performance since it may incur a larger lower bound by considering all possible rotated sequences in a single envelope. To solve this problem, we present a concept of rotation interval, and using the rotation interval we generalize the envelope-based lower bound by exploiting multiple envelopes rather than a single envelope. We also propose equi-width and envelope minimization divisions as the method of determining rotation intervals in the multiple envelope approach. Experimental results show that our envelope-based solutions outperform existing solutions by one or two orders of magnitude.
Atmospheric correction of Landsat Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VIS/NIR) over aquatic environment is more demanding than over land because the signal from the water column is small and it carries immense information about biogeochemical variables in the ocean. This paper introduces two methods, a modified dark-pixel substraction technique (path--extraction) and our spectral shape matching method (SSMM), for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters (Morel and Prieur, 1977) around Korean peninsula. The results of these methods are compared with the classical atmospheric correction approaches based on the 6S radiative transfer model and standard SeaWiFS atmospheric algorithm. The atmospheric correction scheme using 6S radiative transfer code assumes a standard atmosphere with constant aerosol loading and a uniform, Lambertian surface, while the path-extraction assumes that the total radiance (L/sub TOA/) of a pixel of the black ocean (referred by Antoine and Morel, 1999) in a given image is considered as the path signal, which remains constant over, at least, the sub scene of Landsat VIS/NIR imagery. The assumption of SSMM is nearly similar, but it extracts the path signal from the L/sub TOA/ by matching-up the in-situ data of water-leaving radiance, for typical clear and turbid waters, and extrapolate it to be the spatially homogeneous contribution of the scattered signal after complex interaction of light with atmospheric aerosols and Raleigh particles, and direct reflection of light on the sea surface. The overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ spectra, but yields significant errors for clear waters due to the invalid assumption of zero water-leaving radiance for the black ocean pixels. Because of the standard atmosphere with constant aerosols and models adopted in 6S radiative transfer code, a large error is possible between the retrieved and in-situ spectra. The efficiency of spectral shape matching has also been explored, using SeaWiFS imagery for turbid waters and compared with that of the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which falls in highly turbid waters, due to the assumption that values of water-leaving radiance in the two NIR bands are negligible to enable retrieval of aerosol reflectance in the correction of ocean color imagery. Validation suggests that accurate the retrieval of water-leaving radiance is not feasible with the invalid assumption of the classical algorithms, but is feasible with SSMM.

In this study, to analyze the effect of buildings on the image co-registration performance, co-registration results are compared according to the presence or absence of matching points extracted from buildings. To remove the matching points extracted from buildings, a building mask generated by extracting building objects from the digital topographic map was used. In addition, matching points extraction performance and image co-registration accuracy were analyzed according to the magnitude of the convergence angle. Image co-registration results were compared by applying the affine and piecewise linear transformation models, respectively. According to the experimental results, the affine transformation model showed an overall improvement in accuracy after removing the matching points extracted from buildings. On the other hand, the piecewise linear transformation model improved the accuracy at the checkpoints including the surrounding buildings, but the accuracy improvement was not significant at checkpoints in the flat area without the existence of buildings. In addition, when the piecewise linear transformation model was applied, stable accuracy of less than 2 pixels was derived from images with a convergence angle of 20° or less.
