  • Unrestricted measurement method of three-dimensional walking distance utilizing body acceleration and terrestrial magnetism is discussed. The three-dimensional walking distance is derived by the integration of the three dimensional acceleration of foot during swing phase. Since the sensor system attached on the foot rotates during swing phase, the acceleration data measured on the foot include acceleration of gravity which causes inaccurate calculation of the velocity and the distance. Three gyros are used to compensate the rotation of the sensor system. Moreover, one geomagnetic sensor is employed to derive the heading direction of the subject Healthy volunteers performed ...

  • Martian meteorites are the only available Martian Materials on Earth. A suite of demagnetization experiments, temperature dependence of saturation magnetization, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis were carried out to characterize the remanent magnetization carriers of Martian meteorite SaU 008. A stable paleomagnetic record of SaU 008 originates from a newly found spinel ((Fe, Cr, Ti)-spinel) whose composition has never been documented (or identified as magnetic).

  • $Fe_3O_4$ having half metallic property is one of the efficient spin filtering materials which are widely used in spintronic research field and ZnO is wide band gap semiconductor which can be used by tunnel barrier or semiconductor channel in spin MOSFET. We investigated the magnetic and the electric properties of $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayer fabricated on c-$Al_2O_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). For multilayer films, PLD was performed at variable temperatures such as $200{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and at target distance from 40 to 80 mm, KrF eximer laser of 1.5 $J/cm^2$ and a reputation rate of 2Hz. $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were deposited at $4{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr. After fabricating $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers, $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were treated by RTA(Rapid Thermal Annealing) at various temperature to change magnetic phase. The magnetism of the multilayer is changed by thickness of the ZnO tunnel barrier. Magnetic phase of FexOy showed a very small magnetism due to $Fe_2O_3$ ${\alpha}$-phase, but large magnetism from $Fe_3O_4$ or $Fe_2O_3$ ${\gamma}$-phase was observed. In the present study, effect of the ZnO thickness on the MR (magnetoresistance) ratio was investigated in detail.

  • Recent theoretical calculations predicted that a system composed exclusively of 3d transition metals without 4d/5d transition metals or rare earth metals can have strong perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) if Fe and Ni layers are arranged appropriately. They considered only Fe-terminated surfaces, noting that Fe/MgO(001) and CoFeB/MgO(001) show strong perpendicular MCA. In this paper, we investigate magnetism and MCA of Ni/Fe(001) surface where Ni layer is positioned at the surface, by using complementarily the first principles calculational methods of Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP) and Full-potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method. Comparing results of magnetism and MCA obtained by VASP with the results by FLAPW method, we find the VASP results do not show big difference from results by FLAPW method. Magnetic moments of Fe and Ni are enhanced due to strong hybridization between Fe and Ni bands. MCA of Ni/Fe(001) is parallel to the surface, which implies the surface termination plays a crucial role in determining MCA of a system.

  • The surface magnetism of the CsCl structured Co binary compounds, CoX (X = Ti, V, Nb) (001) surface was studied with the calculated electronic structure data obtained by the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FLAPW) method. The magnetic moment of the surface Co atom of the Co-terminated CoTi(001) system was $1.19{\mu}_B$, which is enhanced compared with that of the Co atom in the center layer. The magnetic moment of the surface V atom in the V terminated the CoV(001) system was $1.64{\mu}_B$, which is more than twice of the center layered V atom. The magnetic moment of surface Co atom in the Co terminated CoV(001) system has the value of $1.34{\mu}_B$, little bit smaller than the bulk value. The magnetism was disappeared in the Co terminated CoNb(001) system, and the magnetic moment of the surface Nb atom in the Nb terminated CoNb(001) system was $0.26{\mu}_B$ which is little bit decreased compared to the center layer value.

  • When connecting 6 lead wires from stator windings to the terminals of 3 phase induction motors for Y or ${\triangle}$ connection, it is feared that the polarities of windings could be reversed each other if the wire tags are lost or erased, resulting in inadmissibly high current to motors in case of starting. To protect motors against such situations, some test procedures are necessary during wire connection which need to be easy ways to electricians without particular tools except a general multi-tester and with less time-consuming in the field. This study focuses on a test measure to satisfy these requirements which is able to provide them a convenient procedure for winding polarity discrimination considering the field condition. Here, the proposed measure utilizes the residual magnetism of the rotor and checks the indication of voltage or current at windings which are induced by the residual flux of rotor when rotating it by hands with 3 stator windings connected in the form of I connection. Principle characteristics and experiment results for this method are analyzed in the view of the effectiveness and applicability for the winding polarity discrimination.

  • Large saturation magnetization $4pM_s$ is essentially required for soft magnetic thin layers used in magnetic recording devices. Amorphous Co-based alloys and Fe-Co alloys may be regarded as one of the candidates for soft magnetic materials which possess large $4\piM_s$. Some preparation process to improve soft magnetism of these films were performed in this study. Addition of Ta seemed to be effective to change the magnetostriction constant $\lambda$ from positive value to negative one. The magnetoelastic energy $K_e$ is strongly dependent on $\lambda$. $(Co_{95.7}Zr_{4.3})_{100-x}Ta_x$ films with $K_e$ of negative value have sufficiently soft magnetic characteristics. $Fe_{90}Co_{10}$ alloy exhibits extremely large $4\piM_s$, of about 24 kG. Addition of N and Ta to $Fe_{90}Co_{10}$ films improved the soft magnetism of them. The $Fe_{82.0}Co_{7.6}Ta_{10.4}$:N/Ti multilayered films exhibit better soft magnetic properties and better thermal stability than Fe-Co-Ta:N singlelayer films.

  • We have investigated magnetism of $Fe_2 /Ir_4$(001) superlattice in terms of a first-principles calculation by using an all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FLAPW) method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We considered two magnetic states, the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupled states between the Fe layers. It was found that the FM state was energetically more stable than the AFM one by 0.166 eV. Calculated magnetic moments of the Fe layers were, in absolute values, 2.45$\mu_B$ and 2.30 $\mu_B$for the FM and AFM states, respectively. We also found that the Ir layers had very small magnetic moments less than 0.1 $\mu_B$ for both magnetic states. In all the magnetic states, the subinterface Ir layers were coupled antiferromagnetically to the interface Ir layers, while the interface Ir layers were always coupled frerromagnetically to the interface Fe layers. These results contradicted to recent experimental reports of magnetically "dead"Fe layers in Fe/Ir superlattices for which the Fe layer thickness was less than two atomic layers. We attributed that the experimentally observed "dead"Fe layers were due to possible interdiffusion between Ir and Fe layers.en Ir and Fe layers.
