The effects of loss of torque on magnetic fluid seals with rotating-shafts and the general difficulty of studying magnetic fluid seals are the focus of this work. The mechanism underlying loss of torque on such seals is analyzed using theoretical methods that show that loss of torque can be affected by several factors, including the velocity of the rotating-shaft, the structure of the sealing device, the characteristics of the magnetic field, and the characteristics of the magnetic fluid. In this paper, a model of the loss of torque is established, and the results of finite element analysis and testing and simulations are analyzed. It is concluded that (i) the viscosity of the magnetic fluid increased with the intensity of the magnetic field within a certain range; (ii) when the magnetic fluid was saturated, the increase in loss of torque tended to gradually slow down; and (iii) although the axial active length of the magnetic fluid may decrease with increasing speed of the rotating-shaft, the loss of torque increased because of increasing friction.
The coaxial magnetic gear with the flux concentrating structure is known that it has the torque performance advantage over the coaxial magnetic gear having surface mounted permanent magnet, thanks to the flux focusing effect. But, if the solid cores are used in the modulating pieces and rotor cores to consider the mechanical reliability and cost reduction, the operating torque of the flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gear can be significantly diminished because the iron losses at the solid cores affect the actual transmitted torque. Furthermore, the modulating pieces and rotor cores have different characteristics of the iron losses from one another, because the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density, which cause the iron losses, are different. Thus, in this paper, we focused on the analysis of the characteristics of the space harmonic components of the magnetic flux density and resultant eddy current losses in the surface mounted PM and flux concentrating coaxial magnetic gears, when these coaxial magnetic gears have the solid cores at the modulating pieces and rotor cores. The characteristics of pull-out torque (static torque), operating torque (dynamic torque), and efficiency are also researched, and compared by the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment.
Rotatory two-phase transverse flux machine(TFM) is a relatively new type of motor with high power density, high torque, and low speed in comparison to conventional electrical motors. However, it has some shortcomings,.i.e. complex construction and high possibility of the magnetically induced vibration due to its inherent structure. This paper investigates the characteristics of the magnetic force and the torque in the rotatory two-phase TFM by using the 3-D finite element method and the spectral analysis. This research shows that the average torque decreases and that the torque ripple increases as the phase delay increases. It also shows that the unbalanced magnetic force is one of the dominant excitation forces in this machine. And it proposes a new topology of rotatory two-phase TFM to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic force.
The magnetic gear, which amplifies the torque by filtering the magnetic field generated by the low-speed permanent magnet with a modulator, can exclude gear contact and can be effectively applied when there are environmental restrictions. In this paper, we discuss the magnetic force characteristics of a magnetic gear using a magnetic focusing array that replaces a general permanent magnet array magnetized in a radial direction along the circumferential direction. The torque increasing effect of the discussed array, known as an arrangement that increases the principal component by focusing a radial magnetic field, is compared with that of a general magnetic gear. In particular, in a magnetic gear using such an array, the sensitivity of torque according to variables is analyzed to see how various variables known as factors affecting torque have an effect.
Permanent magnetic gears are magneto-mechanical devices that are widely used to replace the ordinary mechanical gear and to transmit torque without the mechanical contact. This study investigates the characteristics of touch free permanent magnetic gear according to the employing systems. The effect of the magnetic torque is analyzed by using 3 dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM). To estimate the transmission torque of FEM model, the numerical results are compared with the experimental results. The influences of geometry size, magnet number on transmission torque are obtained. As results of this paper, it is confirmed that the transmission torque behavior is associated with the configuration of the magnet numbers and the air gap between the two permanent magnetic gears.
This study investigated torque characteristics for Couette flow experimentally under circumstaces that ferrofluids were between two coaxial spheres. Torque measurement was obtained for the situation where the inner sphere was rotating while the outer sphere was kept stationary. The magnetic field was imposed on the fluid, using a bar magnet which was inserted in the inner sphere. In the laminar flow region the torque increase when the magnetic field is applied and the critical Reynolds number is increased. However, in the transition regime, the effect of the magnetic field on the torque characteristics decrease as Reynolds number increases. The value of torque were the same as those of glycerine solution beyond the cirtical Reynolds number. We also made experimental equation which could obtain coefficient of torque within critical Reynolds number in terms of sphere spacing Reynolds number and magnetic properties of ferrofluid.
A wireless magnetic torque sensor is utilized to measure the torque generated in the rotating shaft in magnetic field without connecting to the shaft by any wire. In this study, a new wireless magnetic torque sensor was introduced. The structure of the sensor was explained detailed as well as its operation principle. Resulting from the torque measurement experiment results, the sensor was proven to measure the generated torque effectively. Compared with traditional contact torque sensor, the wireless one has low cost and good environment adaptation ability. Moreover, the intractable wrapping wires around the shaft are removed in this design. Hence the wireless torque sensor may be expected as a possible sensing device for many applications, such as the electric assisting rotation system in automobiles, the torque sensing system in motors, the arm rotation system in robotics and so on.
This paper proposes new types of models that have coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) configurations to increase torque transmission capability. They have flux concentrating structures at the outer low speed rotor, and permanent magnets (PMs) are embedded in the space between stationary pole pieces. The torque performances of the proposed models are compared with those of a basic CMG model. The harmonic torque components due to air gap field harmonics are also analyzed to investigate the torque contribution of each harmonic by using finite element analysis (FEA) and the Maxwell stress tensor. The proposed CMG model is optimized to have high torque density with low torque ripples by response surface methodology (RSM). Compared to the basic CMG model, the proposed model has a huge increase in transmitted torque density, and is very advantageous in term of PM use.
In this paper, torques of two motors are compared by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). One has a symmetric rotor structure and the other has an asymmetric rotor structure. The comparison shows that the asymmetric rotor structured motor has reduced torque ripple compared to the symmetric. The torque of the compared motor models was analyzed by separating into magnetic torque and reluctance torque. Through the analysis of torque component separated, it is shown that the magnetic torque and the reluctance torque compensate each other in the motor with the asymmetric structure rotor. Here "compensate" means decrementing the effect of one or more harmonics. It is shown how this compensation appears between the magnetic torque and the reluctance torque by looking into back electro motive force (emf) and the relative permeability distribution of rotor core.
We find a metastable vortex state of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy free layer in spin transfer torque magnetic tunneling junctions by using micromagnetic simulations. The metastable vortex state does not exist in a single layer, and it is only found in the trilayer structure with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy polarizer layer. It is revealed that the physical origin is the non-uniform stray field from the polarizer layer.
