  • The purpose of this research is to study on the heat transfer characteristics of separate type heat pipe with a rotor. The heat transfer characteristics of the rotor condenser are various on input heat of evaporator, rotational speeds of rotor, and working fluid amount. The results obtained from the study are as follows. 1. Magnetic fluid using seal of the rotor operated in stability by a variation of temperature and rotation speeds. The configuration of magnetic fluid seal assembly was adequate. 2. Steam ejector is effective in recovering working fluid condensate in the rotor. When steam ejector is operating, the heat flux of working fluid does not change, with the wall temperature in the rotor. 3. The optimum design conditions on working fluid amount and rotational speeds are effective in evaporator volume 50%, rotational speeds 200rpm, 300rpm, and operating temperature $80^{\circ}C$. With working fluid amount increasing, overall heat transfer coefficient decreases linearly.

  • This paper describes a fabrication of Fe-dispersed hydrophilic magnetic fluid and its application to oil seal in combination with the Nd-permanent magnet. The results are as follows; 1) Using silica coated iron particle of magnetization of 125.5 emu/g (at 10 kOe) and the mean particle size of 100 $\AA$, after multiple adsorption to the surface of silica coated iron particle with oleic acid ion, D.B.S. and T.M.A. ion, hydrophilic Fe-magnetic fluid [70 %(g/∝)Fe, magnetization of 52 emu/g and viscosity of 1450 cp] can be produced by dispersing the iron particle in ethylene glycol solution. 2) The oil seal apparatus consisting of six stages of Nd-permanent magnet (3200 Gauss) and Fe-magnetic fluid [70 %(g/∝) Fe] showed an excellent pressure resistance of 7400 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ under the gap between shaft and oil seal was 0.2 mm.

  • Recent results are presented concerning the development of magnetofluidic leakage-free rotating seals for vacuum and high pressure gases, evidencing significant advantages compared to mechanical seals. The micro-pilot scale production of various types of magnetizable sealing fluids is shortly reviewed, in particular the main steps of the chemical synthesis of magnetic nanofluids and magnetic composite fluids with light hydrocarbon, mineral oil and synthetic oil carrier liquids. Design concepts and some constructive details of the magnetofluidic seals are discussed in order to obtain high sealing capacity. Different types of magnetofluidic sealing systems and applications are reviewed. Testing procedures and equipment are presented, as well as the sealing capabilities of different types of magnetizable fluids.

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the f~iction torque characteristics of magnctic fluid seals for various oil temperatures, rotating speeds, and vacuum pressures. The friction torque of MFS was measured by high response torque meter. The experimental results show that, as the rotating speed increases, the fi'iction torque of MFS increases and as the oil temperature increases, the friction torque of MFS decreases. Also, the experimental results show that the friction torque of Model II is 1.73 ~ 2.56, 2.0 ~ 2.89, 2.0 - 3.25 times larger than those of Model I under the atmospheric pressure, vacuum pressure(10$^{-4}$ and 10$^{-6}$ torr), respectively.

  • Magnetite in the use of magnetic fluid seal was synthesized by coprecipitation method. Mean particle size of magnetite was measured about 12 nm by using dynamic light scattering(DLS). As a result of XRD test, along with the $NH_4OH$ concentration was increased, the crystallinity of magnetite was increased. The zeta potential of dispersed ferrofluid in water was measured in the range from -49.3 mV to -26.2 mV by DLS. The shape of magnetite particle was sphere form, and the spiking effect of aqueous and oily ferrofulid was confirmed.
