  • This paper presents the results and gained experiences from the Project Based Learning (PBL) of magnetic component design within a Power Electronics Course. PBL was applied during the laboratory exercises through a design-project task based on a boost converter test board. The students were asked to calculate the main boost converter's circuit parameters' capacitor C and inductor L, and then additionally required to design and build-up the inductor L, in order to meet the project's goals. The whole PBL process relied on ideas from the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate), where the students are encouraged to consider the whole system's process, in order to obtain hands-on experience. PBL is known to be a motivating and problem-centered teaching method that gives students the ability to transfer their acquired scientific knowledge into industrial practice. It has the potential to help students cope with demanding complexities in the field, and those problems they will face in their future careers.

  • In this paper ERP-4 viterbi decoder for magnetic disk read channel is designed. The viterbi decoder consists of ACS circuit, path memory circuit, minimum detection circuit, and output selection circuit. In the viterbi decoder the number of state is reduced from 8 to 6 using (1,7) RLL codes and modulo comparison based on 2's complement arithmetic is applied to handle overflow problem of ACS module. Also to determine the correct symbol values in nonconvergent condition of path memory, pipelined minimum detector which determines path with minimum state metric is used. The EPR-4 viterbi decoder is designed using 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS technology and consists of about 15,300 transistors and has 250 Mbps data rates under 3.3 volts.

  • In this paper, particle swarm optimization(PSO) is applied for the design of frequency selective surface based artificial magnetic conductor. An equivalent circuit model for this artificial magnetic conductor(AMC) with Jerusalem Cross arrays was derived and then PSO was applied for obtaining the optimized geometrical parameters with desired resonant frequency. The resonant frequency and the reflection phase characteristics from the optimization were compared to the results from commercial software for verifying the validity of this paper. The procedure presented in this paper can be applied to design the AMC with different frequency selective surface and also can be used for the design of microwave circuits like the AMC ground planes.

  • The electromagnetic parameters of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) such as the open load permanent magnet flux, d axis reactance $X_d$, and q axis reactance $X_q$, are most essential to the performance analysis and optimization design of the motor. Based on the numerical analysis of the 3D electromagnetic field, the three electromagnetic parameters of permanent magnet synchronous motors with U form interior rotor structures are calculated by FEA. The rules of the leakage coefficient and reactance parameters changing with the air gap length, permanent magnet magnetism length, and isolation magnetic bridge dimensions in the rotor are given. The calculated values agree well with the measured values. The FEA results are integrated with the self compiled electromagnetic design program to optimize the prototype motor. The tested performances of the prototype motor prove that the method is suitable for the optimization of motor structure.

  • In this paper, we analyzed characteristic of window type current transformer and we performed the optimal design consider to the loss; in order to design the current transformer figured signal of overcurrent warning circuit. The core size of window type current transformer was determined by the secondary coil turns. We analyzed current waveform, which is appeared by the number of coil turns on the core, we made sure the relation of secondary coil turns and load resistance in order to improve the non-sinusoidal wave by the flux saturation of the current transformer core. Additionally, we did improvement of the accuracy and optimal design through the transformation of the inner diameter and the stack length when the outer diameter of core is sustaining.

  • The position sensors used in a magnetic bearing system are desirable to provide some degree of fault-tolerance as the rotor position is necessary for the feedback control to overcome the open-loop instability. In this paper, we propose an inductive position sensor that can cope with a partial fault in the sensor. The sensor has multiple poles which can be combined to sense the in-plane motion of the rotor. When a high-frequency voltage signal drives each pole of the sensor, the resulting current in the sensor coil contains information regarding the rotor position. The signal processing circuit of the sensor extracts this position information. In this paper, we used the magnetic circuit model of the sensor that shows the analytical relationship between the sensor output and the rotor motion. The multi-polar structure of the sensor makes it possible to introduce redundancy which can be exploited for fault-tolerant operation. The proposed sensor is applied to a magnetically levitated turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Experimental results validate the fault-tolerance algorithm.

  • The high-velocity electromagnetic forming (EMF) process is based on the Lorentz force and the energy of the magnetic field. The advantages of EMF include improved formability, wrinkle reduction, and non-contact forming. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to determine the practical parameters for the EMF process. A 2-D axis-symmetric electromagnetic model was used, based on a spiral-type forming coil. In the numerical simulation, an RLC circuit was coupled to the spiral coil to measure various design parameters, such as the system input current and the electromagnetic force. The simulation results show that even though the input peak current levels were at the same level in each case, the forming condition varied due to differences in the frequency of the input current. Thus, the electromagnetic forming force was affected by the input current frequency, which in turn, determined the magnitude of the current density and the magnetic flux density.

  • In this paper, the single port dual-band resonator for magnetic resonance wireless power transfer is proposed. The proposed dual-band resonator is consists of 20 turns spiral coil, a single loop, matching circuit, lumped elements, and a single port. The two sides of the matching circuit are connected to via holes. The spiral coil is operated at MF-band and single loop is operated at HF-band, respectively. We use two of the same structure resonators and simulated and the power transfer efficiency was calculated. The efficiency of simulation and measurement is above 60% at the MF and HF bands, and the distance is 100 mm.

  • A simulation study of the distribution of magnetic flux induced by a U-shaped electromagnet into a two-layer massive object with variations in the depth and properties of the surface layer has been carried out. It has been established that the hardened surface layer "pushes" the magnetic flux into the bulk of the magnetized object and the magnetic flux penetration depth monotonically increases with increasing thickness of the hardened layer. A change in the thickness and magnetic properties of the surface layer leads to a redistribution of magnetic fluxes passing between the poles of the electromagnet along with the layer and the bulk of the steel object. In this case, the change in the layer thickness significantly affects the magnitude of the tangential component of the field on the surface of the object in the interpolar space, and the change in the properties of the layer affects the magnitude of the magnetic flux in the magnetic "transducer-object" circuit. This difference in magnetic parameters can be used for selective testing of the surface hardening quality. It has been shown that the hardened layer pushes the magnetic flux into the depth of the magnetized object. The nominal depth of penetration of the flow monotonically increases with an increase in the thickness of the hardened layer.

  • This paper describes a lens transmissive type tilting actuator for a projection TV. An electromagnetic analysis and a structural analysis of the tilting actuator system is necessary to design a tilting actuator for a projection TV. The tilting actuator is composed a permanent magnet, coil and yoke as the electromagnetic components and it needs a driving hinge part as the mechanical component. The design of the tilting actuator for the projection TV is performed by the following procedure. Firstly, a magnetic flux density of the tilting actuator system is analyzed by a mathematical theory and an electromagnetic FEM. Secondary, a magnetic circuit method is used to determine tilting force. Thirdly, the structural FEM is carried out with an FE model of a lens-transmissive type tilting actuator and then the prototype of the model is manufactured. The characteristic of the prototype is experimentally observed. Finally, a design for a new hinge configuration is suggested for better performance.
