The use of magnesium alloys meets the need of reducing weight of componests(especially in automotive and aerospace industry) keeping unmodified their mechanical properties. The adoption of magnesium alloys in sheet forming processes is still limited, due to their low formability at room temperature caused by the hexagonal crystal structure. In this study, the authors aim to understand the process condition which can lead to a successful improvement in the formability of a magnesium alloy(AZ31). Experiment and simulations of deep drawing were doned at various warm temperature for the blank and tool(holde and die)while the punch was kept at room temperature by cooling wale. in order to confirm that the deep drawing performance of magnesium alloy can be considerably enhanced with using the local heating and cooling technique.
Magnesium alloys have been rapidly attracting as lightweight structural material in various industry fields because of having high specific strength and low density. It is well known that the crystallographic texture plays an important role in improvement of poor room temperature ductility of magnesium alloys. In this study, high-temperature plane strain compression deformation was conducted on extruded AZ80 magnesium alloy at 723K by varying the strain rates ranging from 5.0×10-3s-1 to 5.0×10-2s-1 in order to investigate the behaviors of texture formation. It was found that texture formation behaviors in three kinds of specimens were affected by continuous and discontiuous deformation mechanism.

Magnesium alloy sheets have unique mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening response. The unusual mechanical behavior of magnesium alloys has been understood by the limited symmetry crystal structure of HCP metals or by deformation twinning. In the present study, the continuum plasticity models considering the unusual plastic behavior of magnesium alloy sheet were derived for a finite element analysis. A new hardening law based on two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metal sheets such as Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. In terms of the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified to include the anisotropy of magnesium alloys.
This study discussed the possible optimization of enzyme-mediated calcite precipitation (EMCP) as a soil-improvement technique. Magnesium chloride was added to the injection solution to delay the reaction rate and to improve the homogenous distribution of precipitated minerals within soil sample. Soil specimens were prepared in 1-m PVC cylinders and treated with the obtained solutions composed of urease, urea, calcium, and magnesium chloride, and the mineral distribution within the sand specimens was examined. The effects of the precipitated minerals on the mechanical and hydraulic properties were evaluated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and permeability tests, respectively. The addition of magnesium was found to be effective in delaying the reaction rate by more than one hour. The uniform distribution of the precipitated minerals within a 1-m sand column was obtained when 0.1 mol/L and 0.4 mol/L of magnesium and calcium, respectively, were injected. The strength increased gradually as the mineral content was further increased. The permeability test results showed that the hydraulic conductivity was approximately constant in the presence of a 6% mineral mass. Thus, it was revealed that it is possible to control the strength of treated sand by adjusting the amount of precipitated minerals.
Magnesium alloys have given high attention to the industry of light-weigh as automobile and electronics with aluminium, titanium and composite alloys due to their high strength, low specific density and good damping characteristics. But the magnesium contained structures under high temperature have the problems related to creep deformation and rupture life, which is a reason of developing the new material against creep deformation to use them safely. The purpose of this study is to predict the creep deformation mechanism and rupture time of AZ31 magnesium alloy. For this, creep tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy were done under constant creep load and temperature with the equipment including automatic temperature controller with acquisition computer. The apparent activation energy Qc, the applied stress exponent n and rupture life have been determined over the temperature range below 0.5Tm and stress range of 109~187MPa, respectively, in order to investigate the creep behavior. AZ31 Magnesium alloy identify the activation energy for creep deformation and the stress dependence to creep rate at below 0.5Tm, and then investigate the mechanism for creep deformation and creep rupture life of AZ31 Magnesium alloy.
In autobody assembly, thin-wall, tubular connections have been used for the frame structure. Recent interest in light materials, such as aluminum or magnesium alloys, has been rapidly growing for weight reduction and fuel efficiency. Due to higher thermal expansion coefficient, low stiffness/strength, and low softening temperature of aluminum and magnesium alloys, control of welding-induced distortion in these connections becomes a critical issue. In this study, the material sensitivity to welding distortion was investigated using a T-tubular connection of three types materials; low carbon steel (A500 Gr. A), aluminum alloy (5456-H116) and magnesium alloy (AZ91C-T6). An uncoupled thermal and mechanical finite element analysis scheme using the ABAQUS software program was developed to model and simulate the welding process, welding procedure and material behaviors. The predicted angular distortions were correlated to the cumulative plastic strains. A unique relationship between distortion and plastic strains exists for all three materials studied. The amount of distortion is proportional to the magnitude and distribution of the cumulative plastic strains in the weldment. The magnesium alloy has the highest distortion sensitivity, followed by the other two materials with the steel connection having the least distortion. Results from studies of thin-aluminum plates show that welding distortion can be minimized by reducing the cumulative plastic strains by preventing heat diffusion into the base metal using a strong heat sink placed directly beneath the weld. A rapid cooling method is recommended to reduce welding distortion of magnesium tubular connections.
While the die casting has been mainly used to manufacture the magnesium alloy parts, the press forming is considered as an alternative to the die casting for saving the manufacturing cost and improving the structural strength of the magnesium alloy parts. Because the magnesium alloy has low formability at room temperature, forming at elevated temperatures is a necessary condition to obtain the required material flow for press forming. However, the elevated temperature forming does not always guarantee the sufficient formability under the dry friction condition because the surface damage such as scratch or wear may accelerate the material failure. In the present study, the solid-type lubricants such as PTFE, graphite and $MoS_2$ were tested for the square cup warm deep drawing using the magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet. The formability improvement by using the lubricant was examined by comparing the maximum deep drawing depth using the PTFE against no lubricant. The formability difference for the different lubricant was also examined based on the maximum deep drawing depth.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of antioxidant vitamins and magnesium supplementation on fasting blood glucose and lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: This study is a unequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Seventyone subjects with type 2 diabetes who were recruited from home visiting clients of a public health center, completed the trial. The experimental group entered a 12-week treatment period with antioxidant vitamins and magnesium and the control group with no antioxidant vitamins and magnesium. Results: Serum level of fasting blood glucose decreased from $134.7mg/d{\ell}$ to $125.0mg/d{\ell}$ and total-cholesterol decreased from $215.5mg/d{\ell}$ to $198.2mg/d{\ell}$ in the experimental group. No changes in fasting blood glucose and total-cholesterol were demonstrated in the control group. Conclusions: A short-term supplementation with antioxidant vitamins and magnesium can reduce fasting blood glucose and total-cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes. The continuous effect of this supplementation and the beneficial effect on the prevention of diabetes complication still needs to be demonstrated.
Magnesium material could be widely used in the automotive industry because of its high strength to weight ratio, but the electric resistance spot welding process of magnesium sheets is difficult because of its low electric resistance and high thermal conduction and thermal expansion. For this reason, an electric resistance surface friction spot welding process using rotating dies is suggested for the spot welding of magnesium metal sheets. This welding method can be characterized by three heating methods: (1) electric resistance heating on contacted surface, (2) surface friction heating by rotating dies, and (3) thermal conduction heating from heated steel electrodes, for the fusion of metal at the interfacial zone between the two magnesium sheets. This welding process also has variables to explore, such as welding currents, diameters of the steel electrode, and rotating dies. It was found that the welding strength could reach industrial requirements by applying a welding current of 11.0kA, with steel electrodes of 12mm diameter, with rotating dies of 4.4 mm diameter, under the condition of a revolution speed of 1200rpm of rotating dies, for the surface friction spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets of 1.4mm thickness.
Magnesium alloys become popular research topic in last decade due to its light weight and relatively high strength-to-weight ratio in the energy aspiration age. Almost all structure materials are supposed to suspend stress. Magnesium is quite sensitive to corrosive environment, and also sensitive to environmental assisted cracking. However, so far we have the limited knowledge about the environmental sensitive cracking of magnesium alloys. The corrosion fatigue (CF) test was conducted. Many factors' effects, like grain size, texture, heat treatment, loading frequency, stress ratio, strain rate, chemical composition of environment, pH value, relative humidity were investigated. The results showed that all these factors had obvious influence on the crack initiation and propagation. Especially the dependence of CF life on pH value and frequency is quite different to the other traditional structural metallic materials. In order to interpret the results, the electrochemistry tests by polarization dynamic curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were conducted with and without stress. The corrosion of magnesium alloys was also studied by in-situ observation in environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The corrosion rate changed with the wetting time during the initial corrosion process. The pre-charging of hydrogen caused crack initiated at $\beta$ phase, and with the increase of wetting time the crack propagated, implying that hydrogen produced by corrosion reaction participated in the process.
