  • A burr has been defined as undesirable projection of material formed as the result of plastic flow from a cutting or shearing operation. It is unavoidable in all kinds of machining operation. As a result, burr makes troubles on manufacturing process due to deburring cost, quality of products and productivity. In face milling operation, burrs are formed along five edges on the workpiece. In this study, the primary interest is about exit burr The influence of the cutting parameters on the formation of exit burrs in face milling will be described experimentally. Using the results of experimental study, burr types are classified according to appearance and formation mechanism in exit burr. The burr formation mechanism in each type of burr is suggested. Data bases are developed to predict burr formation result.

  • Burrs can be formed on the feed marks ridges as well as on the edges of the machined parts in machining operations. These burrs are undesirable in terms of the surface quality, the precise dimensioning of machined parts and the safety of operators. This paper experimentally investigates the sideward burr formation in 3-dimensional cutting. In particular, the experimental relationships between the size of sideward burr and the cutting parameters are established and suggestions are made for minimizing sideward burr formation.

  • High speed milling experiment on the hardened mold steel (CALMAX at hardness of HRC 55) is carried out using small diameter ball endmills. Tool lift and wear characteristics under the various machining parameters are investigated Effect of dynamic runout on the wear of the tool is also studied. For most of the cases, catastrophic chipping of tool edge is not observed and uniformly distributed wear on the flank surface of the tool is obtained. It is found that lower rate of tool wear is obtained as the cutting speed is increased. Also, high pick feed rate is found to be more favorable in terms of the tool wear and material removal rate.

  • This paper describes a cell programming environment that deals with problems associated with programming Flexible Manufacturing Cells(FMCs). The environment consists of the cell programming editor and the automatic generation module. In the cell programming editor, cell programmers can develop cell programs using task level description set which supports task-oriented specifications for manipulation cell activities. This approach to cell programming reduces the amount of details that cell programmers need to consider and allows them to concentrate on the most important aspects of the task at hand. The automatic generation module is used to transform task specifications into executable programs used by cell constituents. This module is based on efficient algorithm and expert systems which can be used for optimal path planning of robot operations and optimal machining parameters of machine tool operations. The development tool in designing the environment is an object-oriented approach which provides a simple to use and intuitive user interface, and allows for an easy development of object models associated with the environment.

  • This paper describes new methods to minimize the cutting time in zigzag milling operation of two dimensional polygonal surfaces. Previous works have been focused on mainly experimental approaches by considering some machining parameters such as, spindle speed, depth of cut, cutter traverse rate, cutter diameter, number of teeth, tool wear, life of tool, and so on. However, in this study, we considered two geometrical factors one by one in order to see the effect separately, which are the length of cut and the number of cutter traverse. In an N-sided concave or convex polygon, an algorithm has been developed which minimize the total length of cut. Also, a heuristic approach was used to minimize the number of cutter traverse.

  • This paper presents a method of predicting the machining parameters on the turning process of low carbon steel using a neural network with back propagation (BP) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut are used as input variables, while surface roughness and electric current consumption are used as output variables. The data from experiments are used to train the neural network that uses BP and PSO to update the weights in the neural network. After training, the neural network model is run using test data, and the results using BP and PSO are compared with each other.

  • An experimental study was carried out to observe the characteristics of impingement of assist gas from a rectangular supersonic nozzle on kerf surface in laser machining. A micro-scale supersonic (Mach number 2.0) rectangular nozzle system was designed and fabricated for the purposes, and hot tests of the performance of the nozzle system was proceeded in the ITI corporation laboratory. For various related parameters such as laser powers, nozzle pressures and cutting speeds, the quality of the frontal view of cut edge surfaces was observed by a microscope. In the study, it was shown that the application of the present micro-rectangular supersonic nozzle in an off-axis configuration made it possible to cut a mild steel, by combinations of relatively low laser - powers, large standoff distances, and assist gas with no oxygen, which was not achieved by conventional laser cutting processes.

  • In order to establish the optimum process parameters and diamond saw blade composition for machining natural stone, the chip formation process and the wear process must be understood. Diamond saw blade is one of the most effective, versatile, and extensively used methods of processing rock and other hard materials, such as granite, marble, concrete and asphalt. For many years, it has been known that chip thickness is one of the most significant in the understanding of the sawing process, and other variables such as force and power have been correlated with it. In this study, mathematical relations of a material chipped by a single grit of the saw blade will be undertaken. The material chipping geometries have been mathematically defined and derived as maximum chip thickness.

  • Titanium alloy conducted in this experimental study has superior corrosive resistant and is mainly used in aerospace, automotive and petro-chemical industries. It is also treated with important materials of domestic goods due to improvement of the standard of living. In this study specimens were processed in the wire EDM after annealing, solution treatment and aging. Results were obtained through repeated experments of main rough process and finish process with the change of process parameters. Processing characteristics such as surface hardness, surfaces roughness, shape of processed surface and components were measured. The results confirmed that the above mentioned elements were improved in accordance with the number of process. Therefore, the optimal wire EDM condition in accord with processing characteristics is proposed in this experiment.

  • In this study, a CAD/CAM system for axisymmetric deep drawing processes has been developed. An approach to the system is based on the knowledge based system. Under the environment of CAD/CAM software of Personal Designer, the system has been written in UPL. The geometries of intermediate and final object in deep drawing process, including processes parameters are input for the CAD/CAM system. The input data can be obtained from the results of Pro-Deep. The parts drawing of die sets for each process is generatedin tool design module of the CAD/CAM system. Also, the die assemblydrawings can be obtained. NC commands for machining of the part can be generated in the developed CAD/CAM system.
