  • This paper deals with a geometric error simulator, measurement and inspection of workpiece errors on the machine tools, and identification and compensation methodology of thermal errors in machining centers. In order to raise the machining accuracy of workpieces a measurement and inspection system on the machine tool is developed. By using MPPGT module Manual and CNC type CMMs are realized on the machining centers. To compensate for geometric and thermal deformation errors of machining centers, a real time and an off line geometric adaptive control system were developed on the machining centers. A vertical and a horizontal machining center equipped with FANUC 0MC were used for experiments. Performance of the systems were confirmed with a large amount of experiment.

  • Tungsten carbide microshaft is used as various micro-tools in MEMS because it has high hardness and good rigidity. In this study, experiments were performed to produce tungsten carbide microshaft using electrochemical machining. $H_2SO_4$solution was used as electrolyte because it can dissolve tungsten and cobalt simultaneously. Optimal electrolyte concentration and machining voltage satisfying uniform shape and large MRR of workpiece were found. For one-step machining, the immersion depth over 1 mm was selected for avoidance of concentration of electric charge at the tip of the microshaft. The limit diameter with good straightness was shown and an empirical formula for WC-microshaft machining was suggested. By controlling the various machining parameters, a straight microshaft with 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter, over 1 mm length and under 0.5$^{\circ}$ taper angle was obtained.

  • Machining processes produce high accurate metallic parts in metal working industries. Lubrication for machining enhances quality of machined surface and it prolongs the life of cutting tools. Since lubricant is poisonous to human body and environment, it causes occupational diseases for workers and air pollution in environment. Because of these problems generated, developed countries do not permit the excessive usage of lubricant in machining shops. This research focuses on the development of MQL machining technique that consumes minimal amount of lubricant, which reduces possible outbreak of occupational diseases and air pollution. This research sets experimental equipments for MQL machining. Experiments for this study are designed with major machining parameters in MQL. Through the analysis of experiments, this paper presents the optimal machining parameters.

  • An ultrasonic machining process is efficient and economical means for precision machining of glass and ceramic materials. However, the mechanism of the process with respect to the crack initiation and propagation and the stress development in the ceramic workpiece subsurface arc still not well understood. In this research, we have investigated the basic mechanism of ultrasonic machining of ultrasonic machining of glass by the experimental approach. For this purpose, we designed and fabricated the desktop micro ultrasonic machine. The feed is controlled precisely by using the constant load control system. During machining experiments, the effects of abrasive characteristics and machining conditions on the surface roughness and the material removal rate are measured and compared.

  • Even though most die-maker are using CAD/CAM systems rout NC tool-path generation, “front-end”CAD/CAM technologies have not been fully adapted to sculptured surface machining(SSM) nor are sufficiently utilized in die shops. This gap between die-making industry and CAD/CAM community persists mainly because of the lack of a SSM-process model through which the two groups communicate with each other. Proposed in this paper is a model of SSM-processes which is built around the concepts of machining stages, unit machining operations, and each machining stage is decomposed into a sequence of unit machining operations(UMOs). Identified in the paper are five machining stages and 17 types of UMO. Based on the framework of the proposed model, an example of inner-panel stamping-die machining processes is described in detail.

  • In the wire cut electrical discharge machining, the optimal machining parameters setting satisfying the requirements of both high efficiency and good quality is very difficult because its process involves a series of complex physical phenomena and the machining parameters are numerous over diverse range. In this paper, the experimental investigation has been performed to find out the influence of the machining parameters on the machining performance such as cutting speed and surface roughness. The selected experimental parameters are no load voltage, discharge peak current and pulse-off time. The experimental results give the guideline for selecting suitable machining parameters.

  • An algorithm is developed to find optimal machining parameters for multiple machining environments. The cutting rate-tool life (R-T) characteristic curve presents the general loci of optima and is useful for the flexible machining operations planning. The R-T characteristic curve for the machining economics prob- lems with linear-logarithmic tool lofe model may be determined by applying sensitivity analysis to log-dual problems. Three cases of the change of machining environments are considered. An end milling example is constructed to illustrate the algorithm.

  • Micro electrical discharge machining (${\mu}EDM$) has been used for non-conventional material removal. One drawback of ${\mu}EDM$ is low productivity. In this study, we tried to find the optimal machining conditions to manufacture the micro hole with an optimal machining time without loss of accuracy. Taguchi method was used to figure out the relation between machining parameters and characteristics of the process. It was found that the electrode wear, the entrance and exit clearance gave a significant effect on the diameter of the micro hole when the diameter of the electrode was identical. Grey relational analysis was used to determine the optimal machining condition for minimum machining time without loss of accuracy. The obtained optimal machining condition was the input voltage of 80V, the capacitance of 680pF, the resistance of $500{\Omega}$, the feed rate of $1.5{\mu}m$/s and the spindle speed of 2900rpm. The machining time was reduced to 48% without loss of accuracy under the optimal machining condition.

  • The drum cam with rotational follower is used to apply the ATC and index table of machine tools and it has the merit of minimizing the backlash. In general, to machine the drum cam with rotational follower, 5-axis CNC machine must be used and its kinematic principle must be included in modeling on CAM. So, the commercialized CAM software can't be applied to this machining of drum cam. Though some special software for machining drum cam was developed, it could be applied to special 5-axis CNC machine tools and the finish machining module was not applied. To solve this problem, this study includes the induction of the post processing algorithm for the rough machining of drum cam on several 5-axis CNC machine tools, type AC, AB and Be. The finish machining software will be treated in next study. A sample drum cam was machined on 5-axis CNC machine tool of AC type. The designed geometric profile of drum cam consist to the measured profile after machining well. This post processing algorithm for rough machining of the drum cam was clearly verified.

Recent major issue on the micro machining technology may be the development of optical parts for the back light unit of display which has the largest market. This special issue makes up with three parts; the large surface micro machining system and machine, machining process and forming process. In this paper, the state-of-the-art and core technology of large surface micro machining system is introduced with focus on the manufacturing technology for the back light unit of LCD TV. Then, some research results on the development of a roll die lathe is introduced which involves the concept of machine design, improvement of thermal characteristics in the spindle system, improvement of relative parallelism and straightness between spindle system and long stroke feed table, machining of micro pitch patterns. Finally, the direct forming process is introduced as the future work in the large surface micro machining field.
