  • In modern industries, in whichwhere high productivity is one of the most important concerns, machine tools are facing difficulties to satisfy the high high-speed operation, while and at the same time achieve the precision machining. Generally, the vibrations of the structure increase proportionally to the square of the operating speed so that the precision machining is severely damaged with increased speed. which is a must for the high productivity. Therefore, the suppression of the structural vibrations of the machine tools is the a major concern in the machine tool industry in order to achieve the high productivity and the precision machining simultaneously. In this study, the dynamic properties of a machining center structure were analyzed through the experiment and the computer simulations, and furthermore the results from those were compared to confirm the validity of the simulation model. The design alterations were deduced from the analysis and applied to the simulation model to investigate the effects of those alterations to suppress the vibrations of the machine. The result shows that the relatively simple design alterations, without redesigning the main structure of the machine, can suppress the vibrations effectively.

  • Ultra precision diamond cutting is a very efficient manufacturing method for optical parts such as HOE, Fresnel lenses, diffraction lenses, and others. During micro cutting, the rake angle is likely to become negative because the tool edge radius is considerably large compared to the sub-micrometer-order depth of cut. Depending on the ratio of the tool edge radius to the depth of cut, different micro-cutting mechanism modes appear. Therefore, the tool edge sharpness is the most important factor affecting the qualities of machined parts. That is why diamond especially mono-crystal diamond, which has the sharpest edge among all other materials is widely used in micro-cutting. The question arises, given a diamond tool, what is the minimum (critical) depth of cut to get continuous chips while in the cutting process\ulcorner In this paper, the micro machinability around the critical depth of cut is investigated in micro grooving with a diamond tool, and introduce the minimizing method of cutting depth using vibration cutting. The experimental results show the characteristics of micro cutting in terms of cutting force ratio (Fx/Fy), chip shape, surface roughness, and surface hardeing around the critical depth of cut.

  • This paper is on the development of a system for removing membranes which is designed exclusively for aircraft components. Membrane removal solution is a most critical issue in aerospace industries since a method of manufacturing the components tends to be changed from fabrication of many parts to cutting into one body. The cutting method inevitably produces a huge amount of chips and then membranes remain in the body. The membrane removal process, as a result, becomes an important issue since it is directly related to productivity. We tried to develop a new machine which will replace the conventional method that uses a handy tool. The machine has been designed for a cutting tool set to follow the unique shape of the slot in the body by a cam follower and cut the membrane automatically. The design has been checked by structural analysis: stress and vibration analysis. A prototype test has been finished. This paper summarizes a series of development process of the deburring machine and some design issues are discussed.

  • With increasing the needs for micro and precision parts, micro machining technology using micro tools has been studied to fabricate a small part with high density such as electronics, optics, communications, and medicine industry more than before. Though these micro tools have developed rapidly, it is difficult to apply them to micro fabrication technologies, because of the inherent manufacturing. In this study, micro tools (WC) to produce micro structures and parts were manufactured by cylindrical grinding machine employing ELID (Electrolytic In-process Dressing) technique and the micro tools are fabricated as square shape with the dimension less than 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With the micro tools on the same machine, characteristics of micro grooving and drilling are evaluated. Also we compare normal micro machining with ultrasonic micro machining on the vibration table. It is confirmed that the developed micro tools are fully applicable to micro grooving, micro drilling and free form cutting.

  • Recently the machine industry is rapidly advanced for improving productivity. Especially an effort decreased error factors of machine tool continuously is being studied. In this paper, we propose a method that decreased vibration in the high speed spindle. By appling 6-sigma technique(DMADOV), we can grasp the influence between the housing design and a rotation accuracy. For a correct conclusion, we measure an actual spindle and analysis by $ARMD^{(R)}$(rotation analysis program). inally we find out influenceable design factors and the improvement condition about 20.7%.

  • Chatter monitoring is also important for realizing an unmanned machining system. while many researches were done on this area, it is still a difficult job to detect very small amplitude amount of chattering. A monitoring system using a capacitive spindle displacement sensor was developed to monitor cutting vibration in turning in this research. The variance of the measured spindle displacement signals using the developed sensor was calculated and utilized to quantify the small vibration in machining. The results were compared with variance obtained using a tool dynamometer. The result showed that the developed system could be utilized in monitoring the subtle changes of cutting vibrations with high sensitivity confidence.

  • Ultrasonic machining is a non-thermal, non-chemical, md non-electorial material removal process, and thus results in minimum modifications in mechanical properties of the brittle material during the process. Also, ultrasonic machining is a non-contact process that utilize ultrasonic vibration to impact a brittle material. In this research characteristics of micro-hole machining for brittle materials by ultrasonic machining(USM) process have been investigated. And the effect of ultrasonic vibration on the machining conditions is analyzed when machining fir non-conductive brittle materials using tungsten carbide tools with a view to improve form and machining accuracy.

  • The forces acting on the tool are an important aspect of maching. For those concerned with the manufacture of machine tools, a knowledge of the forces in needed for estimation of power reguirements and for the design of machine tool elements tool-holders and fixtures, adequately rigid and free from vibration. The force reguired to form the chip is dependent on the shear yield strength of the work material un der cutting conditions which are cutting speed, workpiece, feedrate, insert type. In this study, FG, ML, MP, MC, C, RT inserts were investigated in turning using SM45C, SCM4, SKD11, SUS316, materials. The diameter of materials was 60mm, 80mm, 110mm. This paper presents MP were lowest and SKD11 were largest of the workpiece in cutting forces.

  • In metal cutting chatter is the unstable cutting phenomenon which caused by the interaction between the dynamics of the chip removal process and the structural dynamics of machine tool. When the vibration and chatter on, it reduces tool life and results in poor surface roughness and low productivity of the machining process. In order to observe the effect of chatter on the turned surface, the surface simulation model based on the surface-shaping system are developed under the ideal condition and the occurrence of the regenerative chatter, and it is compared with experiment of profile. In this study, the experiments were conducted in a CNC lathe without cutting fluid to investigate the phenomenon of the chatter.
