  • The electromagnetic intereference(EMI) shielding is very essential for commercial and military purposes. We fabricated multi-walled carbon nanoube(MWNT)/epoxy composites and studied the electromagnetic characteristics of the composites before we study the characteristics of MWNT-filled glass fiber-reinforced composites. After setting up the fabrication process, we measured the permittivities of MWNT/epoxy composites with process variables and MWNT concentrations in X-band(8.2GHz- 12.4GHz). Process variables changed the degree of dispersion, which influenced permittivities and permittivities increased rapidly from 0.5wt% to 1.0wt%.

  • The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is very essential for commercial and military purposes. We fabricated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/epoxy composites and studied the electromagnetic characteristics of the composites before we study the characteristics of MWNT-added glass fiber-reinforced composites. After setting up the fabrication process, we measured the permittivity of MWNT/epoxy composites with process variables and MWNT concentrations in X-band (8.2GHz~12.4GHz). We also observed re-aggregation phenomenon of MWNTs and investigated its effect on the permittivity. The permittivity of the composites was influenced by the degree of dispersion of MWNTs and increased almost linearly as MWNT concentration increases.

  • The studies of particulate reinforced composites have been conducted for many years. The nanocomposites to be studied vigorously in recent years are one of them. We fabricated and studied multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)/epoxy composites which may be useful as matrix for continuous fiber-reinforced composites. We investigated tensile properties of MWNT/epoxy composites as a function of MWNT concentration, which were prepared by the fabrication method established in this study. Tensile stiffness and strength increased 19% at 0.5 wt% and 12% at 0.2 wt%, respectively. We observed the reaggregation phenomenon of MWNTS during curing, which should be controlled to obtain higher tensile properties.

  • We fabricated MWNT-added glass fabric/epoxy composites. We observed the distribution of MWNTs in the composites using scanning electron microscopy and conformed that most of MWNTs exist in matrix rich region and interface between yams in warp and fill directions. We also investigated the change of permittivities with MWNT concentrations. Only $1wt\%$ MWNTs leads to high permittivity and electromagnetic waves are impossible to be transmitted to more than $3wt\%$ MWNT-added composites, which means the characteristics of these composites are comparable to those of metals or carbon fiber-reinforced composites.

  • MWNT(multi-walled carbon nanotube)-filled plain-weave glass/epoxy composites were fabricated and electromagnetic characteristics of the composites were investigated. The observation of the microstructures of the composites revealed that MWNTs are mostly distributed in matrix rich region and the interface between glass fiber yarns in warp and fill direction. The permittivity of the composites, measured in X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) frequency range, increased with weight fraction of MWNTs and remained almost constant with frequency. The measured permittivity was used to investigate the reflection loss of radar absorbing structures (RAS) composed of MWNT-filled composites according to thickness and a RAS were constructed with 10 dB absorbing bandwidth 4.2 GHz and 3.3 mm in thickness.

  • This paper predicts the complex permittivity of MWNT added epoxy depending on agglomeration by numerical analysis. 1wt% MWNT added epoxy specimen is prepared using 3-roll-mill method and its complex permittivity is measured in X-band (8.2~12.4 GHz) using freespace measurement system. The analytic model is comprised of cube epoxy and perfect sphere agglomeration. The complex permittivity of the agglomeration model is predicted by complex permittivity mixing rule using the measured complex permittivity of epoxy and 1 wt% MWNT added epoxy. Commercial electromagnetic analysis software, CST, is used to obtain S-parameter of the analytic model and MATLAB code is used to calculate complex permittivity from the S-parameter. It is confirmed that the complex permittivity increases when the agglomeration size decreases.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential for the reinforcement of polymers or fiber-reinforced composites. In this study, mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-filled plain-weave glass/epoxy composites intended for use in radar absorbing structures were evaluated with regard to filler loading, microstructure, and fiber volume fraction. The plain-weave composites containing MWNTs exhibited improved matrix-dominant and interlaminar fracture-related properties, that is, compressive and interlaminar shear strength. This is attributed to strengthening of the matrix rich region and the interface between glass yarns by the MWNTs. However, tensile properties were only slightly affected by the addition of MWNTs, as they are fiber-dominant properties.

  • Epoxy resins are widely used as high performance thermosets in many industrial applications, such as coatings, adhesives and composites. Recently, a lot of research has been carried out in order to improve their mechanical properties and thermal stability in various fields. Carbon nanotubes possess high physical and mechanical properties that are considered to be ideal reinforcing materials in composites. CNT-reinforced epoxy system hold the promise of delivering superior composite materials with their high strength, light weight and multi functional features. Therefore, this study used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and gamma rays to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy. The diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as epoxy resins were cured by gamma ray irradiation with well-dispersed MWNTs as a reinforcing agent and triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate (TASHFA) as an initiator. The flexural modulus was measured by UTM (universal testing machine). At this point, the flexural modulus factor exhibits an upper limit at 0.1 wt% MWNT. The thermal properties had improved by increasing the content of MWNT in the result of TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). However, they were decreased with increasing the radiation dose. The change of glass transition temperature by the radiation dose was characterized by DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis).

  • As the structures of the high performance electronic equipments and devices recently become more complex, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) have been very essential for commercial and military purposes. Thus, sensitive electrical devices and densely packed systems need to be protected from electromagnetic wave. In this research, glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and carbon fiber/epoxy composites as electrical shielding materials were fabricated and electrical properties of the composites were measured. The concerning frequency band is from 300 MHz to 1 GHz. The performances of composite shielding enclosures were predicted using electromagnetic wave 3-D simulation tool, CST Microwave Studio. The shielding enclosure made of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were fabricated and the shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured in the anechoic chamber.

  • In this work, the effect of chemical treatments of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fiber fabric-reinforced composites was investigated. The surface properties of the MWNTs were determined by acid and base values, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were assessed by interlaminar shear stress (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). The chemical treatments based on acid and base reactions led to a significant change of surface characteristics of the MWNTs, especially A-MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites had higher mechanical properties than those of B-MWNTs and non-treated MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites. These results were probably due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strength, resulting from the acid-base interaction and hydrogen bonding between the epoxy resins and the MWNT fillers.
