  • In clinical computed tomography (CT), regular quality assurance (QA) has been required. This study is to evaluate the MTF for analyzing the spatial resolution using AAPM phantom in CT exam. The dual source somatom definition flash (siemens healthcare, forchheim, Germany), the brilliance 64 (philips medical system Netherlands) and aquilion 64 (toshiba medical system, Japan) were used in this study. The quantitative evaluation was performed using the image J (wayne rasband national institutes of health, USA) and chart method which is measurement of modulation transfer function (MTF). In MTF evaluation, the spatial frequencies corresponding to the 50% MTF for the CT systems were 0.58, 0.28, and $0.59mm^{-1}$, respectively and the 10% MTF for the CT systems were 1.63, 0.89, and $1.21mm^{-1}$, respectively. This study could evaluate the characteristic of spatial resolution of MTF using chart method, suggesting the quantitative evaluation method using the data.

  • One dimensional inhomogeneous phase modulation effects on the MTF of optical system was investigated. The lens under test was a doublet made in Korea. It was 36 mm effective diameter, 128.04 mm effective focal length. The ray-fans and spot diagrams were calculated and presented on the picture for on-axis and off-axis (field of view, $1^{\circ}$ and $2^{\circ}$). Phase modulation was carried out by positioning a phase modulator close contacted with the lens under test. One was linear type that had linearly increasing phase retardation and the other was stepped type which had phase difference $\pi$ for each step. The MTFs were measured on the Gaussian image plane and were compared with one another. The MTFs of linear type phase modulated apertures had a little lower values than the MTF of unmodulated aperture for on-axis but most of all the MTFs of one dimensional phase modulated aperture are improved than the MTF of unmodulated aperture.

  • In this study, optical design for small satellite camera equipped with online optical compensation movements has been conducted. Satellite camera equipped with compensation movements at M2 mirror and focal plane can guarantee the MTF performance through the focal plane image stabilization and the on-orbit optical alignment. The designed optical system is schmidt-cassegrain type that has M1 mirror of a diameter 200mm, GSD 3.8m at an altitude of 700km, and 50 % MTF performance. The performance of the designed optical system has been analyzed through the method of ray aberration curve, spot diagram, and MTF. It has been found by the optical performance analysis that the designed optical system satisfies the optical requirements of satellite camera equipped with online optical compensation movements.

  • In the view of the application of high-precision spatial information production, UAV (Umanned Aerial Vehicle)-Photogrammetry has a problem in that it lacks specific procedures and detailed regulations for quantitative quality verification methods or certification of captured images. In addition, test tools for UAV image quality assessment use only the GSD (Ground Sample Distance), not MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), which reflects image resolution and contrast at the same time. This fact makes often the quality of UAV image inferior to that of manned aerial image. We performed MTF and GSD analysis simultaneously using a siemens star to confirm the necessity of MTF analysis in UAV image quality assessment. The analyzing results of UAV images taken with different payload and sensors show that there is a big difference in σMTF values, representing image resolution and the degree of contrast, but slightly different in GSD. It concluded that the MTF analysis is a more objective and reliable analysis method than just the GSD analysis method, and high-quality drone images can only be obtained when the operator make images after judging the proper selection the sensor performance, image overlaps, and payload type. However, the results of this study are derived from analyzing only images acquired by limited sensors and imaging conditions. It is therefore expected that more objective and reliable results will be obtained if continuous research is conducted by accumulating various experimental data in related fields in the future.

  • Carried out an experiment for quantitative evaluation about intraoral sensor among oral dental imaging equipments in PACS environment. For evaluation, testing environment & evaluation criteria are established that refer to the 'IEC 62220-1-2' and experimented with set up the standard radiation penetration that correspond with RQA-3(IEC 61267). Results of experiments using the image J, derived the ESF(edge spread function), LSF (line spread function) and calculated the MTF(modulation transfer function) finally. As a result, the MTF that 0.1, 0.2sec are 10% about 10 lp/mm and 0.32 sec is the 10% about 9 lp/mm in level represents the value of the MTF. Change of scan condition in dental environmental, according to the MTF value taken note that no changes can be seen enough. However, the dimensions of each other size $1(1200{\times}1600)$, size $2(1440{\times}1920)$ intraoral sensors for 3 lp/mm, respectively 40%, 90% of the note might have been the difference between the value of MTF, in accordance with standard sensors might note differences could be observed.

  • The patients who had been operated total mastectomy are different from general women in their breasts thickness due to breast surgery. As a result, digital chest image from total mastectomy patients will be different attenuation. The main objective for this study is to show that a proper Ion chamber standard combination measuring MTF which is objective basis for Digital image, when be x-ray for total mastectomy patient. We have designed the unique number that shown Left is 1, Right is 2, Center is 3 and have put the edge phantom on detector ion chamber. Lastly, we have obtained experiment images. The evaluations of all image quality have measured by 50% MTF of spatial resolution and absorption dose using Matlab(R2007a). The result showed that average exposure condition, MTF value, absorption dose for 1+3 and 2+3 combinations were 2.745 mAs, 1.925 lp/mm, 0.688 mGy. Consequently, that showed high MTF, DQE and low dose than other combinations. Therefore, a proper changes of ion chambers are able to improve image quality and to reduce radiation exposure when be X-ray for total mastectomy patients. Also, it will be possible to standard for application chamber combination and utilization on clinical detection.

  • With recent advancement of the medical imaging systems and picture archiving and communication system (PACS), installation of digital radiography has been accelerated over past few years. Moreover, Computed Radiography (CR) which was well established for the foundation of digital x-ray imaging systems at low cost was widely used for clinical applications. This study analyzes imaging characteristics for two systems with different pixel sizes through the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), Noise Power Spectrum (NPS) and Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE). In addition, influence of radiation dose to the imaging characteristics was also measured by quantitative assessment. A standard beam quality RQA5 based on an international electro-technical commission (IEC) standard was used to perform the x-ray imaging studies. For the results, the spatial resolution based on MTF at 10% for Agfa CR system with I.P size of $8{\times}10$ inches and $14{\times}17$ inches was measured as 3.9 cycles/mm and 2.8 cycles/mm, respectively. The spatial resolution based on MTF at 10% for Fuji CR system with I.P size of $8{\times}10$ inches and $14{\times}17$ inches was measured as 3.4 cycles/mm and 3.2 cycles/mm, respectively. There was difference in the spatial resolution for $14{\times}17$ inches, although radiation dose does not effect to the MTF. The NPS of the Agfa CR system shows similar results for different pixel size between $100{\mu}m$ for $8{\times}10$ inch I.P and $150{\mu}m$ for $14{\times}17$ inch I.P. For both systems, the results show better NPS for increased radiation dose due to increasing number of photons. DQE of the Agfa CR system for $8{\times}10$ inch I.P and $14{\times}17$ inch I.P resulted in 11% and 8.8% at 1.5 cycles/mm, respectively. Both systems show that the higher level of radiation dose would lead to the worse DQE efficiency. Measuring DQE for multiple factors of imaging characteristics plays very important role in determining efficiency of equipment and reducing radiation dose for the patients. In conclusion, the results of this study could be used as a baseline to optimize imaging systems and their imaging characteristics by measuring MTF, NPS, and DQE for different level of radiation dose.
