BACKGROUND: Momordica charantia (MC) have been used in various parts of the world to treat diabetes. Despite the highest effects of phytochemicals than any other part of the plant, the main components of seed of MC grown in Korea and their properties have not been studied extensively. METHODS AND RESULTS: The seeds of MC were extracted into five different polarity solvents: 30%, 50%, 70%, 95% ethanol and distilled water. The 95% ethanol extract showed the most potent inhibition ($IC_{50}=88.7{\mu}g/mL$) against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. To investigate the compounds responsible for this effect, activity guided fractionation of MC seeds by chromatography yielded two phytochemicals which were confirmed as vicine (1) and ${\alpha}$-eleostearic acid (2) based on their NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic data. Among them, ${\alpha}$-eleostearic acid (2) possessed potent ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities with $IC_{50}$ values from $32.4{\mu}g/mL$. CONCLUSION: Collectively, the results from this present study strongly suggest that both extract and ${\alpha}$-eleostearic acid (2) have potent ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Furthermore, ${\alpha}$-eleostearic acid (2) as the most active ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor was proven to be present in high quantities in the MC seeds by a HPLC chromatogram.

Impact between fruits and other materials is a major cause of product damage in harvesting and handling systems. The oriental pears are more susceptible to bruising than other fruits such as European pears and apples, and are required more careful handling. The interest in the handling of the pears for the processing systems has raised the question of the allowable drop height to which pears can be dropped without causing objectionable damage. Drop tests on pears were conducted using an impact device developed by authors to estimate the allowable drop height without bruising. The impact device was constructed to hold in a selected orientation and to release a fruit by vacuum for dropping on to a force transducer. The drop height was adjustable for zero to 60 cm to achieve the desired distance between the bottom of the fruits and the top of the impact force transducer. The transducer was secured to 150 kg$\sub$f/ concrete block. The transducer signal was sampled every 0.17 ms with a strain gage measurement board in the micro computer where it was digitaly stored for later analysis. The selected sample fruit was Niitaka cultivar of pears which is one of the most promising fruit for export in Korea. The pears were harvested during the 1998 harvest season from an orchard in Daejeon. The sample fruit was selected from two groups which were stored for 3 months and 5 months respectively by the method of current commercial practice. The pears were allowed to stabilize at environmental condition(18$^{\circ}C$, 65% rh) of the experimental room. One hundred fifty six pears were tested from the heights of 5, 7.5. 10 and 12.5 cm while measurement were made of impact peak force, contact time, time to peak force, dwell time, pear diameter and mass. The bioyield strength and modulus of elasticity were measured using UTM immediately after each drop test. The allowable drop height was estimated on the base of bioyield strength of the pears in two ways. One was assumed the peak force during impact test increasing linearly with time, and the other was based on the actual drop test results. The computer program was developed for measuring the impact characteristics of the pears and analyzing the data obtained in the study. The peak force increased while contact times decreased with increasing drop height and contact times of the sample from the hard tissue group. The allowable drop height increased with increasing bioyield strength and contact times, and also varied with Poisson\`s ratio, mass and equilibrium radius of the pears. The allowable drop height calculated by a theoretical method was in the range from 1 to 4 cm, meanwhile, the estimated drop height considering the result of the impact test was in the range from 1 to 6 cm. Since the physical properties of fruits affected significantly the allowable drop height, the physical properties of the fruits should be considered when estimating the allowable drop height.

The quality of decoction water would be important for the preparation of herbal medicines. Four types of decoction water, S1, S2, S3 and S4, three types of mineral water from Jeju island and one type of tap water from Seoul region were evaluated. The contents of minerals in decoction water were analysed by ICP-AES and ICP-MS. There was significant difference in the mineral contents between the types of decoction water. The bioactive components from rhubarb were extracted with four types of water and the relationship between mineral contents in water and the extracted amounts of components was evaluated. The total extraction was calculated by evaporating water and weighing the residue. The bioactive components in rhubarb were determined by HPLC method. Kruskall-Wallis rank sum tests were used. Multiple factor analysis was used to analyze the relation between the contents of mineral and total extraction or bioactive components in the decocted solutions. Not only the total extraction but also the amount of extracted bioactive components showed statistically significant relationship with the contents of minerals and anions in decoction water.
Although 3D-complex fractionated atrial electrogram (CFAE) mapping is useful in radiofrequency catheter ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), the directions and configuration of the bipolar electrodes may affect the electrogram. This study aimed to compare the spatial reproducibility of CFAE by changing the catheter orientations and electrode distance in an in -silico left atrium (LA). We conducted this study by importing the heart CT image of a patient with AF into a 3D-homogeneous human LA model. Electrogram morphology, CFAE-cycle lengths (CLs) were compared for 16 different orientations of a virtual bipolar conventional catheter (conv-cath: size 3.5 mm, inter-electrode distance 4.75 mm). Additionally, the spatial correlations of CFAE-CLs and the percentage of consistent sites with CFAE-CL<120 ms were analyzed. The results from the conv-cath were compared with that obtained using a mini catheter (mini-cath: size 1 mm, inter-electrode distance 2.5 mm). Depending on the catheter orientation, the electrogram morphology and CFAE-CLs varied (conv-cath: $11.5{\pm}0.7%$ variation, mini-cath: $7.1{\pm}1.2%$ variation), however the mini-cath produced less variation of CFAE-CL than conv-cath (p<0.001). There were moderate spatial correlations among CFAE-CL measured at 16 orientations (conv-cath: $r=0.3055{\pm}0.2194$ vs. mini-cath: $0.6074{\pm}0.0733$, p<0.001). Additionally, the ratio of consistent CFAE sites was higher for mini catheter than conventional one ($38.3{\pm}4.6%$ vs. $22.3{\pm}1.4%$, p<0.05). Electrograms and CFAE distribution are affected by catheter orientation and electrode configuration in the in-silico LA model. However, there was moderate spatial consistency of CFAE areas, and narrowly spaced bipolar catheters were less influenced by catheter direction than conventional catheters.

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of the long-term high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) on the spasticity and the balance in chronic stroke patients. Twenty-six subjects with spasticity over lower limbs were allocated randomly into two groups under standard rehabilitation: (1) TENS group, (2) placebo-TENS group. TENS stimulation was applied on the both the gastrocnemius for 30 minutes, 5 days a week for 4 weeks(100 Hz, 0.25 ms, 2 times sensory threshold). The Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS) and Hand-held manual muscle tester were used to assess the ankle plantarflexor spasticity. Balance function under three conditions was measured by using force-plate and the amount of postural sway was assessed; in (1) the condition of standing with eyes opened, (2) with eyes closed and (3) the condition of standing on unstable surface with eyes opened. Both groups showed significant improvement in spasticity and balance function after treatment for 4 weeks(p<.05). Especially, TENS group showed a significant reduction of spasticity compared to placebo-TENS group(p<.05). These results suggested that additional stimulation of a long-term high-frequency TENS to standard rehabilitation induced an improved balance function and a spasticity reduction. The long-term application of high-frequency TENS will be an effective intervention for reducing spasticity and increasing balance ability in the chronic stroke patients.
Steel industry which has been accomplishes the base of our country economy, automobile and electronic industry are taking charge of the role, whose electroplating is important. Large amount of wastewater and various metal salts, including hazardous materials was generated from the electroplating pre-treatment, plating, washing and post-plating. Currently, the general wastewater follows in the environmental law and neutralization after controlling, sludge where the various metal is mixed reclaims below multiple regulative and trust it is controlling. The sludge which includes the gas price metal reclaims in the field and trust it controls. a reclamation price of land it is insufficient but and the control expense holds plentifully and it loses the gas price metal which is valuable. Consequently, The research regarding to recover a gas price metal actively from this waste water, it is advanced. A new method to recover valuable metals from electroplating wastewater synthesis of metal sulfides using topical methods utilizing iron oxidizing bacteria, reagent of sulfides and solvent extraction using an organic solvent, such as the development of the law to recover these metals and metal sulfides of wastewater using selective recovery have been studied. By using these wastewater treatment method under frequency above 95%, it has been obtained the valuable metal from the wastewater, where the metal ion of Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni complexes was mixed. As we discuss the wastewater, which has been discharged from electroplating process, it is important and will be applied to the resources of metal in the urban mine.

In this study we aims to examine the co-doping effects of 1/3 mol% $Mn_3O_4+Co_3O_4$ (1:1) on the reaction, microstructure, and electrical properties such as the bulk defects and grain boundary properties of $ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Sb_2O_3$ (ZBS; Sb/Bi=0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) varistors. The sintering and electrical properties of Mn,Co-doped ZBS, ZBS(MCo) varistors were controlled by Sb/Bi ratio. Pyrochlore ($Zn_2Bi_3Sb_3O_{14}$) was decomposed and promoted densification at lower temperature on heating in Sb/Bi=1.0 by Mn rather than Co. Pyrochlore on cooling was reproduced in all systems however, spinel (${\alpha}$- or ${\beta}$-polymorph) did not formed in Sb/Bi=0.5. More homogeneous microstructure was obtained in $Sb/Bi{\geq}1.0$ In ZBS(MCo), the varistor characteristics were improved drastically (non-linear coefficient, ${\alpha}$=30~49), and seemed to form $Zn_i^{..}$(0.17 eV) and $V_o^{\bullet}$(0.33 eV) as dominant defects. From impedance and modulus spectroscopy (IS & MS), the grain boundaries have divided into two types, i.e. the one is tentatively assign to $ZnO/Bi_2O_3(Mn,Co)/ZnO$ (0.47 eV) and the other ZnO/ZnO (0.80~0.89 eV) homojunctions.
Tosudite from the Sungsan mine, Korea is an alteration product of rhyolitic tuff in the cretaceous Hwangsan Formation. It is associated with illite, dickite, nacrite or quartz and also found in the cavities of black claystone. X-ray diffraction and chemical analyses show that the Sungsan tosudite is a lithium-bearing aluminous 1:1 regularly interstratified mineral of di, dioctahedral chlorite and smectite. Its structural formula is $(K_{0.73}Na_{0.02}Ca_{0.07})(Si1_{13.23}Al_{2.77})(Li_{0.52}Mg_{0.08}Mn_{0.01)Fe^{3+}_{0.07}Al_{12.33})O_{40}(OH)_{20}$ and it suggests that Sungsan tosudite consists of regularly interstratified Li-donbassite and beidellite. DTA and TG curves as well as IR absorption data also support such a result. Temperature of formation of tosudite is inferred to be between $110{\circ}$ and $270{\circ}C$.
Objectives: This study investigated the cutaneous electrogastrogram (EGG) and other clinical characteristics of dyspeptic patients who have been diagnosed with Stomach Qi Deficiency (SQD) using the Scale for Stomach Qi Deficiency (SSQD). Methods: This study reviewed the clinical records of 38 patients with dyspepsia who were evaluated with SSQD and EGG at the Department of Digestive Diseases of Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital in Seoul, Korea from November 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020. We evaluated the EGG and other clinical characteristics of the SQD patients to determine if there was an association between the SSQD scores and the EGG. Results: In terms of the EGG, the SQD patients showed no significant increase in the percentage of normal slow wave after a meal and a slightly decreased power ratio at Channel 1 and Channel 2. We also found an association between the SSQD scores and the EGG parameters at Channel 1 and Channel 3. The average Ryodoraku score of the patients was 33.00±14.90 (μA). In the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) test, the average Total Power (TP) and Low Frequency/High Frequency (LF/HF)) ratio was 1356.60±13 6.41(ms2) and 1.68±2.25, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that clinicians can use Electrogastrography to enhance accuracy when diagnosing the SQD pattern.

Tomato fruit quality is determined by the contents of various functional metabolites in addition to fruit appearance. To develop tomato cultivars with higher amounts of functional compounds, an efficient quantification method is required to identify the natural variations in the compounds in the tomato germplasm. In this study, we investigated tomato varieties, which included 23 inbred lines and 12 commercial F1 cultivars, for their contents of seven watersoluble vitamins (vitamin C, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9) and five polyphenolic compounds (quercetin, rutin, kaempferol, myricetin, and naringenin chalcone). The results of high performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that vitamin C and naringenin chalcone were the major water-soluble vitamins and polyphenolic compounds, respectively, and their abundance was highly variable depending on the cultivar. By contrast, the contents of vitamin B1, quercetin, and kaempferol were lowest among the cultivars. With regard to the relationship between metabolic compounds and fruit characteristics, a significant association was found in fruit size, indicating that cherry tomato varieties contain higher amounts of the compounds compared to large fresh-type varieties. However, no direct association was detected in fruit color, except for naringenin chalcone. The results of this study provide new insights on the quantification of metabolic compounds and the selection of breeding materials, which are prerequisites for the development of functional tomato varieties.
