A pesticide monitoring study was undertaken for the strawberry and cucumber samples collected from plastic film houses and additional strawberries from supermarkets located in Seoul city in 1983 to evaluate pesticide residues in these food commodities and also to give basic informations in establishing maximum residue limits. Organophosphorus insecticides were not detected in any cucumber samples except that diazinon found with low residue levels in two strawberry samples. Fungicide procymidone and chlorothalonil were detected with considerable high frequencies in these vegetables while their residue levels were fairly low. Even the maximum residue levels. they were much lower than maximum residue limits established in these vegetables in Environment Administration. Korea. Of the strawberries from supermarkets in Seoul city, procymidone, chlorthalonil and dichlofluanid fungicides were also detected with similar detection frequencies and residue levels to those from the plas tic film houses. By washing the strawberries with tap water, the residues were removed from 38% to 95% of the total residues. Presently, it is considered that pesticide residues in strawberry and cucumber may be no harmfullevels for food commodities.
BACKGROUND: Unintentional residual pesticide in soil derived from preceding crops and the transfer to succeeding crops was considered a critical barrier for positive list system (PLS). Thus, an uncertain risk is predicted for ethoprophos applied at cultivation of preceding crop (Korean cabbage) to succeeding crop (spinach). METHODS AND RESULTS: Ethoprophos was treated on soil following the recommended dose and 5 times dose according to the safe use guidelines for Korean cabbage after seeding. On the 4 days after harvesting of preceding crop, spinach was sowed. The initial residual amounts of ethoprophos on soil (7.081-19.493 mg/kg) were decreased to 3.832-7.218 mg/kg until the harvest of Korean cabbage, and then finally decreased to 0.011-0.079 mg/kg after spinach cultivation. The uptake rates of ethoprophos from soil by Korean cabbage were 0.01-0.03% and distributed to root (0.150-0.903 mg/kg) and shoot (0.021-0.151 mg/kg), respectively. The residual amounts of uptake and translocation from preceding crop cultivated soil to spinach edible part were found to be below LOQ. CONCLUSION: The plant back internal (PBI) for ethoprophos is not recommended during sequential cultivation of leafy vegetables, since the residual amounts of ethoprophos in spinach were less than MRL (0.02 mg/kg).
BACKGROUND: The healthy food trend has encouraged the consumption of natural products, including berries. This trend is expected to increase the strawberry consumption. There has been a concern about the exposure of pesticides approved for use on strawberry. In this study, the dissipation patterns of systemic and non-systemic pesticides were evaluated in strawberry under plastic-covered greenhouse conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cyflumetofen and dimethomorph were applied on strawberry in the critical GAP (Good Agricultural Practices). Strawberries were harvested at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days after final application of the pesticides. The analyses of the residual pesticides were performed by HPLC-DAD with C18 column. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) of cyflumetofen and dimethomorph were 0.04 and 0.02 mg/kg, respectively. The recovery of cyflumetofen and dimethomorph were 88.1 ~ 103.3% and 79.0 ~ 110.2% for the spiked two levels (LOQ and 10LOQ), respectively. The biological half-lives of cyflumetofen and dimethomorph werer 7.5 and 8.9 days, respectively. The dissipation rates in strawberry were calculated by the statistics method at a 95% confidence level. The distribution showed that pesticides with low log Pow were indicated by the decreased dissipation rate and pesticides with similar log Pow and low solubility also showed the decreased dissipation rate. CONCLUSION: The residues of cyflumetofen and dimethomorph in strawberry at time 0 after the final application were below the established MRL in Korea. The dissipation behavior of systemic and non-systemic pesticides in strawberry is affected by their log Pow and water solubility values.

Background: As the Positive List System (PLS) is implemented in broad application to agricultural products, attention to the correct use of pesticides is also needed in the production of mulberry leaves and fruit. In this regard, three types of pesticides against mulberry popcorn disease were applied 2 - 3 times both in the field and greenhouses to prepare safety standards. Residual pesticide analysis was conducted on mulberry fruits and leaves. Methods and results: Three pesticieds, thiophanate-methyl, thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole and fluopyram registered as PLS pesticides for mulberry popcorn disease, were sprayed in the Wanju and in Buan regions, after which residual pesticide analysis was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). As three pesticieds were either undetected or below the permissible level in mulberry fruit, demonstrating that they were suitable for safe spraying. However, 5.6 mg/kg of thiophanate-methyl was detected in the greenhouse after three application, which was slightly above maximum residue limit (MRL). Furthermore the level of thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole was higher than 0.2 mg/kg ("Gwasang No. 2" variety, spraying twice) or similar to 0.09 mg/kg ("Daesim" variety, spraying thrice) the permissible level (0.1T mg/kg) as the thiophanate-methyl was detected in mulberry leaves in the greenhouse. Conclusions: The spraying frequency for controlling mulberry popcorn disease in greenhouses should be limited to two times or less, especially when mulberry leaves are treated with thiophanate-methyl·triflumizole careful consideration is required if the leaves are to be used as food materials.
BACKGROUND: It is a very important task to block distribution of the agricultural products contaminated with pesticides in advance to protect consumers from residual pesticides among the agricultural products. Therefore, this study was performed to determine residual characteristics of pesticides in time-dependent manner and present scientific evidences for pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) setting. METHODS AND RESULTS: The tested pesticides, chromafenozide and pyridalyl were sprayed onto the kale twice (seven day intervals) and then the plant samples were collected at 0 (after 3 hours), 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days after the last spraying. Residual concentration of chromafenozide in kale decreased with 74.9% (of decreased fraction, field 1) and 85.3% (field 2) and pyridalyl decreased with 81.2% (field 1) and 85.8% (field 2), calculated by comparisons of the concentrations at 0 day and 10 days. Also biological half-lives of chromafenozide in kale were 5.6 day (field 1) and 3.4 day (field 2), and those of pyridalyl were 4.3 day (field 1) and 3.5 day (field 2). CONCLUSION(S): If the residues of chromafenozide and pyridalyl in kale from 10 days before harvest are less than 37.6 mg/kg and 58.9 mg/kg, respectively, it is expected that safe kale below MRL can be supplied on the pre-harvest day.
Currently, the web page that provides residual substance information provides information on residual acceptance criteria in food for pesticides and veterinary drugs. Residual substances refer to pesticides or veterinary drugs that are left in agricultural, livestock, or marine products after being used by diluting them thousands of times. However, users are experiencing inconvenience due to the lack of information on pesticides and veterinary drugs, delays in search time, and Web page errors. In addition, the manager has the inconvenience of manually entering information such as residual acceptance criteria and analysis methods. Thus, this paper proposes a system that can efficiently manage and update the history of changes in information, such as residual material standards for pesticides, animal medicines and the characteristics of drugs.
Pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs) have been proposed as criteria for a proactive role to exceed the maximum residue limit (MRL) of pesticides in agricultural products at harvest. However, PHRL numbers are significantly less than those of established MRLs. This study was performed to determine the dissipation constants and residual concentrations of lufenuron after application on crown daisy and chamnamul under green house conditions. Two residue field trials for each crown daisy and chamnamul were selected to consider a different geographical site at least 20 km far from one another. The pesticide was treated according to critical GAP. After samples were sprayed with lufenuron, they were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days and analyzed using HPLC-DAD. The mean recoveries of crown daisy and chamnamul were within the range of 70-120% with below 20% coefficient variation, which is within the acceptable limits specified by the manual of pre-harvest residue study for pesticides (MFDS, 2014). The biological half-lives in field I and field II were 7.0 and 4.6 days for crown daisy and 2.7 and 2.8 days for chamnamul, respectively. The lower bounds of 95% confidence intervals of dissipation rate constants of lufenuron in crown daisy were determined to be 0.0692 and 0.1298 for field I and field II, respectively, and in chamnamul were 0.2067 for both field I and field II. After applying lufenuron 5% EC, the lufenuron residues on crown daisy and chamnamul at the pre-harvest intervals (14 days for crown daisy and 7 days for chamnamul) were below the safe levels. The dissipation rates of lufenuron in crown daisy and chamnamul were evaluated for similarities with leafy vegetables based on a 95% confidence interval.

BACKGROUND: The pesticide residue in rotational crop is one of the main concerns to agricultural products because it has the potentiality of violating positive list system (PLS). Thus, the crops used for the rotational cultivation should be considered the pesticide residue patterns to meet the PLS guideline. In this study, we evaluated the residue patterns of fungicide azoxystrobin in radish based on plant back interval (PBI) experiment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Azoxystrobin was treated onto greenhouse soil at 217 g a.i./10a in two different regions. Radishes were sown onto the soil 30 and 60 days after azoxystrobin treatment. The soil and plant samples were subjected to a modified QuEChERS method and LC/MS/MS analyses to determine the residues of azoxystrobin. The methods were validated to meet the guidelines of the pesticide residue analysis recommended by the Rural Development Administration, Republic of Korea. Azoxystrobin was dissipated significantly in soil during the experimental period and found as a level less than 0.01 mg/kg in radish 30 and 60 days after treatment. Azoxystrobin residues in radish samples were lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL) for root vegetables. CONCLUSION(S): This study suggests 30 days as a PBI for rotational cultivation of radish in greenhouse soil that had been treated with azoxystrobin at a level of 217 g a.i./10a.
BACKGROUND: Prior to implementing a positive list system (PLS), there is a need to establish acceptable daily intake (ADI) and maximum residue limit (MRL) for veterinary drugs that have been approved a few decades ago in South Korea. On top of that, chronic dietary exposure assessment of veterinary drug residues should be performed to determine whether the use of these veterinary drugs would cause health concerns or not. METHODS AND RESULTS: To establish the ADI, the relevant toxicological data were collected from evaluation reports issued by international organizations. A slightly modified global estimate of chronic dietary exposure (GECDE) model was employed in the exposure assessment owing to the limited residual data. Therefore, only the ADI of ephedrine was established due to insufficient data for the other veterinary drugs. Thus, instead of ADI, the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) value was used for the other drugs. Lastly, the hazard index (HI) was calculated, except for etizazole hydrochloride, due to the potential of mutagenicity. CONCLUSION(S): The HI values of ephedrine, menichlopholan, and anacolin were found to be as high as 6.4%, suggesting that chronic dietary exposure to the residues from these uses was unlikely to be a public health concern. Further research for exposure assessment of veterinary drug residues should be performed using up-todate Korean national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES) food consumption data. In addition, all relevant available data sources should be utilized for identifying the potentials of toxicity.

The aim of this study was to investigate pesticide residues in 2,877 market vegetables in the northern area of Seoul in 2013. Pesticide residues in the samples were analysed by multiresidue method for 285 pesticides using GC-ECD/NPD and HPLC-DAD/FLD. 385 samples(13.4%) were detected with pesticide residues at or below MRL, and 15 samples(0.5%) were found to detect pesticide residues exceeding MRL. The most frequently detected samples were sedum(63.6%), chamnamul(45.8%), leek(44.5%) and green&red pepper(30.8%). Among the 15 violated samples, leek(5 cases) and welsh onion(4 cases) showed the highest violation rate. A total of 74 samples(18.5%) contained multiple pesticide residues in one vegetable. Procymidone, chlorofenapyr and cypermethrin were the pesticide most frequently found. As a tool of risk assessment through the consumption of pesticide detectable agricultural products, the ratio of estimated daily intake (EDI) to acceptable daily intake (ADI) was calculated into the range of 1.05~28.61%. The results have meant that there was no health risk through dieting commercial agricultural products detected with pesticide residues.
