  • Firms prefer in some specific conditions cooperative R&D to non-cooperative for developing technology. Previous studies on the conditions show firms want to choose cost-sharing type of cooperative R&D (the CS-RJV) rather than non-cooperative one when target technology is either 'relatively easy'or 'relatively difficult', and to join multiple-research type of cooperation (the MR-RJV) than to compete each other if technology is only 'relatively easy'. However, by introducing technological spillover as well as difficult of technology, only if there shown that this seemingly contrasted phenomenon almost disappears : the MR-RJV can i3e also preferred by firms even in case of 'relatively difficult'technology only if there exists some extent of a technological spillover.

  • Stay cables, such as are used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Several methods have been proposed and implemented to mitigate this problem, though each has its limitations. Recently some studies have shown that semiactive dampers can potentially achieve performance levels nearly the same as comparable active devices with few of the detractions. This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate the performance of semiactive dampers for mitigating the vibration of stay cables. Moreover, a number of recently proposed semiactive control algorithms are formulated for use with shear mode MR damper to compare the efficiency of each algorithm through numerical simulation. Numerical simulation considers a stay cable excited by shaker and controlled by shear mode MR dampers. In simulation, the response with a semiactive damper is found to be dramatically reduced compared to the uncontrolled case. Furthermore, it is verified that the algorithm based on Lyapunov control theory is very efficient in mitigating the cable vibration.

Isolated Dissecting Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysm

  • Dissecting aneurysms frequently involve the vertebral arteries and their branches, but those involving the posterior inferior cerebellar artery [PICA] and not vertebral artery at all are extremely rare. We present a case of an isolated dissecting aneurysm of the PICA without involvement of vertebral artery. A 54-year-old man presented with dizziness and headache. MR imaging of the brain showed a cerebellar infarction of the left PICA territory. MR angiographic and cerebral angiographic studies revealed a dissecting fusiform aneurysm involving the left proximal PICA. Subsequently, the patient underwent GDC embolization. A postembolization angiogram demonstrated complete obliteration of the aneurysm. In this report, the treatment modalities for this rare condition is described with review of the literature.

Comparative evaluation of intracranial aneurysms between 3D-TOF MRA with 3.0T MR and CTA with 16-slices MDCT

  • To evaluate clinical visualization of intracranial aneurysms between 3D-TOF MRA with 3.0T MR and CTA with 16-slices MDCT. In a prospective series, 12 patients with 16 aneurysms were studies with 3D-TOF MRA and CTA. MRA were performed on a GE Signa 3.0 T system (Signa VH/i, GE) with 25/3/20 (TR/TE/FA). CTA were peformed on a 16 slice MDCT (Sensation 16, Somatom, Siemens) with IV shooting of 80 ml iodinated contrast mediumat antecubital vein at a rate of 3.5 ml/sec. Four among 12 patients underwent DSA for surgery. Size, shape, neck and parent vessel of aneurysms were evaluated for comparison of visualization and detectability of aneurysms.

  • Functional MRI (fMRI) provides an indirect mapping of cerebral activity, based on the detection of the local blood flow and oxygenation changes following neuronal activity (Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent). fMRI allows us to study noninvasively the normal and pathological aspects of functional cortical organization. Each fMRI study compares two different states of activity. Echo-Planar Imaging is the technique that makes it possible to study the whole brain at a rapid pace. Activation maps are calculated from a statistical analysis of the local signal changes. fMRI is now becoming an essential tool in the neurofunctional evaluation of normal volunteers and many neurological patients as well as the reference method to image normal or pathologic functional brain organization.

Changes in SNR and ADC According to the Increase in b Value in Liver Diffusion-Weighted Images

  • In the present study, changes in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the diffusion-weighted images in the normal livers were investigated using changes in b values in 1.5 T MR (magnetic resonance) instruments. Respective diffusion-weighted images and ADC map images were obtained from 20 healthy individuals by increasing b values from 50 to 400 and 800 $s/mm^2$ using 1.5T MR scanner between January 2011 and November 2011. At each ADC map image obtained at each b value, ADCs in the right hepatic lobe, spleen and kidney were measured. As a result, ADCs of the right hepatic lobe, spleen and kidney have gradually decreased in the diffusion-weighted images in accordance with the reduced b value. This outcome may be used as preliminary data for applications to various abdominal diseases.

Efficacy of Mitral Valve Surgery in Moderate Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation (MR) (중등도의 허혈성 승모판막 폐쇄부전증 환자에서 승모판막 수술의 유용성)

  • Background: Patients with mitral regurgitation (MR) in the setting of coronary artery disease have a dismal long-term prognosis whether treated medically or surgically. Moreover, the optimal management of moderate ischemic MR at the time of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains the subjects of controversy. Thus, the present retrospective study was undertaken to determine whether mitral valve surgery for moderate ischemic MR at the time of CABG would be preferable to CABG alone in terms of clinical outcome. Material and Method: Between January 1997 and December 2003, 34 patients with moderate (Gr 3/4) ischemic MR underwent CABG alone (Group I, n=23) or CABG plus mitral valve surgery (Group II, n=11). Operative mortality, long-term survival and echocardiographic parameters were used to evaluate the efficacy of mitral valve surgery in patients with moderate ischemic MR. The mean follow-up durations of each group were $69.3\pm4.3$ months and $53.1\pm4.9$ months respectively. Result: There was no hospital mortality in both groups. There was one case of late mortality in Group I. The mean number of bypass graft was similar ($3.8\pm1.2\;vs\;3.7\pm1.3$ respectively). Cardiopulmonary bypass time was longer in group II (p=0.014). In group II, all of the patients received mitral annuloplasty using ring. On immediate postoperative echo-cardiogram, mitral regurgitation was reduced more in group II (p=0.002). Echocardiogram performed at last follow-up state showed no difference except the grade of MR between the two groups. Actuarial survival of both groups at 5 years was similar ($95.5\%\;vs\;100\%$, p=0.48). Conclusion: This study shows that in selected patients with moderate ischemic MR, CABG without mitral valve surgery might be sufficient. However, patients with low EF and NYHA functional class pre-operatively had tendency of significant residual MR, so mitral valve surgery should be necessary in these patients, and moreover, MR severity and left ventricle volume decreased more in mitral valve surgery group. Therefore, more large-scale studies are necessary to determine these effects on the ventricular function and long-term survival.

Normal MR Spectroscopic Findings of the Cerebellum and Pons: Comparison of the Results between Intra-Unit and Inter-Unit Studies (소뇌와 뇌교의 정상 자기공명분광 소견: 같은 장비내 및 다른 장비간의 결과 비교)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study are to evaluate normal MR spectroscopy (MRS) data of the cerebellum and pons, and to evaluate intra-unit and inter-unit differences of the results. Materials and methods: Nine normal volunteers (mean age 23 years) were studied with two 1.5 Tesla MR units (A and B units). A total of four sessions of MRS study were performed with two sessions in ea.ch MR unit in each volunteer. In each session, MRS data were obtained from bilateral cerebellar hemisphere and pons. MRS was performed using spin-echo single voxel technique with repetition time of 2000 ms, echo time of 288ms and 128 averagings. Voxel size was $2{\;}{\times}{\;}2{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}cm$ in the cerebellum and $1.5{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}cm$ in the pons. Metabolite ratios of NAA/Cho, NAAcCr, NAAc(Cho+Cr) and Cr/Cho (both peak heights and the peak areas) were compared among the results of four sessions of MRS for evaluation of intra-unit and inter-unit differences. Results: In the cerebellum, mean (SO values of peak height NAA/Cho, NAA/Cr, NAA/(Cho+Cr) and Cr/Cho ratios obtained in the first session of A unit were $1.08{\pm}O.16,{\;}1.44{\pm}O.286,{\;}0.61{\pm}O.09{\;}and{\;}O.76{\pm}0.13$, respectively. Comparing with the results of the second session, intra-unit differences were 3-7%. In B unit intra-unit differences were 1-9%, except for 22% of Cr/Cho ratio. Inter-unit differences between A and B units were 1-26%. In the pons, mean ISD values of peak height NANCho, NANCr, NANICho + Cr) and Cr/Cho ratios obtained in the first session of A unit were $1.51{\pm}O.35,{\;}3.35{\pm}O.78,{\;}1.02{\pm}0.16{\;}and{\;}0.47{\pm}O.14$, respectively. Mean NAAfCho, NANCr and NAAI(Cho+ Cr} ratios of the pons were significantly higher than those of the cerebellum. Intra-unit differences were 2-21 % in A unit and 4-18 % in B unit. Inter-unit differences between A and B units were 1-18%. The mean values obtained by using peak area were generally higher and wider in range than those of peak height in both units. Conclusion: Mean NAAfCho, NAAlCr and NAAf(Cho+Cr) ratios of the cerebellum were significanHy lower than those of the pons. Intra-unit differences of most metabolites ratios were generally not significant, whereas inter-unit differences were greater than intra-unit differences in more metabolite ratios. Therefore, normal MRS data of the cerebellum and the pons should be obtained in every MR unit, before MRS applications in the diseases of the cerebellum and the pons.

Comparison of In-Phase and Opposed-Phase FMPSPGR Images in Breath-hold T1-weighted MR IMaging of Liver (호흡정지 T1 강조 간 자기공명영상에서 동위상 역위상 FMPSPGR 영상의 비교)

  • Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of the in-phase (IP) sequence and the opposed-phase (Op) sequence in the detection of focal hepatic lesions in the single breath-hold hepatic MR imaging with fast gradient T1-weighted pulse sequences. Materials and Methods: IP and OP T1-weighted breath-hold imaging was performed using fast gradient echo sequences in 45 patients referred for known focal hepatic lesions, in which 78 lesions were detected. Three blind readers independently reviewed the images for lesion detectability. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the liver, the lesion-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and the liver-to-spleen CNR were also compared. A consensus was reached by three readers to determine which sequence is better in image quality. Results: On OP images, 61(78%), 61(78%), and 63(89%) lesions were correctly identified for reader 1, 2 and 3, respectively. On IP images, 66(85%), 65(83%), and 65(93%) lesions were detected for each reader, respectively. When two image sets were combined, 71(91 %), 69(88 %), and 76(97%) lesions respectively were detected for each reader. In cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, liver-to-Iesion CNR was greater on the OP images(p (0.05), but in other lesions significant difference was not demonstrated. Liver-to-spleen CNR was higher on OP images(p ( 0.1), but the SNR of the liver was higher on the IP images. Conclusion: Use of both IP and OP imaging can be helpful to avoid erroneous missing of some focal hepatic lesions.

  • Imaging assessment of prostate cancer is one of the most difficult sections of oncology imaging. Detecting, localizing and staging of the primary prostate cancer by preoperative imaging are still challenging for the radiologist. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides excellent soft tissue contrast and is widely used for solid organ imaging, but results of preoperative imaging of the prostate gland with conventional MR imaging is unsatisfactory. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) is the cornerstone in oncology imaging, but some limitations prohibit the assessment of primary prostate cancer with PET or PET/CT. Recent studies to overcome these insufficient accuracies of imaging evaluation of primary prostate cancers with advanced MR techniques and PET and PET/CT are reported. In this article, we review the imaging findings of prostate cancer on variable modalities, focused on MR imaging and PET/CT.
