This paper presents a new approach for hysteresis modeling of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The field-dependent hysteresis of MR fluid is investigated using the Preisach model. The commercial MR product (MRF-132LD, Lord Corporation) is employed. Its field-dependent shear stress is then obtained using a rheometer (MCR 300, Physica). In order to show the applicability of the Preisach model to the MR fluid, two significant properties; the minor loop property and the wiping-out. property are experimentally examined. Subsequently, the Preisach model for the MR fluid is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves in discrete manner. The effectiveness of the identified hysteresis model is verified in the time domain by comparing the predicted field-dependent shear stress with the measured one. In addition, the hysteresis model proposed in this work is compared to Bingham model.

This study is about a semi-active quarter car simulation method including a MR(magneto-rheological) damper. The MR damper was modeled as Spencer model that can capture nonlinear and hysteretic behavior. The parameters of the Spencer model were extracted from a random excitation test and optimum treatment of the test data. Then, a suspension control algorithm based on Sky-hook theory was applied for the quarter car simulation. Also, an experiment was done using a quarter car simulator to confirm the simulation results with the Spencer MR damper model.

This paper examines the ASCE first generation benchmark problem for a seismically excited cable-stayed bridge, and proposes a new semi-active control strategy focusing on inclusion of effects of control- structure interaction. In this study, magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers, which belong to the class of controllable fluid dampers, are proposed as the supplemental damping devices, and a clipped-optimal control algorithm, shown to perform well in previous studies involving MR fluid dampers, is employed. The dynamic model for MR fluid dampers is considered as a modified Bouc-Wen model, which is obtained from data based on experimental results for large-scale dampers. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed semi-active control strategy using MR fluid dampers is quite effective.

A new semiactive control strategy for seismic response reduction using a neuro-controller and a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper is proposed. The proposed control system adopts a clipped algorithm which induces the MR damper to generate approximately the desired force. The improved neuro-controller, which was developed by employing the training algorithm based on a cost function and the sensitivity evaluation algorithm replacing an emulator neural network, produces the desired active control force, and then by using the clipped algorithm the appropriate command voltage is selected in order to cause the MR damper to generate the desired control force. The simulation results show that the proposed semiactive neuro-control algorithm is quite effective to reduce seismic responses. In addition, the semiactive control system using MR fluid dampers has many attractive features, such as bounded-input, bounded-output stability and small energy requirements. The results of this investigation, therefore, indicate that the proposed semiactive neuro-control strategy using MR fluid dampers could be effective used for control seismically excited structures.
In the case of designing control devices in a building, reliance on experimental formulation or engineering concepts without using optimization algorithms leads to non-optimal solutions or design parameters, which makes the use of control devices costly and unreasonable. The optimization algorithms are capable of identifying the required number of parameters for a specific design problem, however, this process is difficult and inefficient in dealing with some specific optimal design processes. This paper aims to introduce an upgraded version of the salp swarm algorithm to handle some engineering design. The performance of the new upgraded algorithm is tested using some benchmark test functions as well as a six-story benchmark building equipped with semi-active MR dampers. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully applied to get an optimal design of the MR dampers in the building.

MR(Magnetorheogical) fluid composed of fine iron powders dispersed in silicon oil is utilized to many smart structures and devices because of its significant rheological property change by the application of an external magnetic field. When we deal with the shock wave attenuation of warship structures, we should be able to characterize the high frequency behavior of MR fluids. So far, however, many efforts have been focused on the material characterization of MR fluids at low frequencies below 100Hz. In this paper, the MR fluid property characterization at high frequency region is performed. An experimental setup based on wave transmission technique is made and the storage modulus as well as the loss modulus of MR fluids are found from the measured data of speed sound and attenuation. Details of the experiment are addressed and the obtained storage and loss moduli are addressed at $50kHz{\sim}100kHz$.

In this study, seismic response control performance of decentralized response-dependent MR damper which generates the control force using only the response of damper-installed floor, was experimentally investigated through the tests of a full-scale structure installed with large MR dampers. The performance of the decentralized control algorithm was compared to those of the centralized ones such as Lyapunov, modulated homogeneous friction, and clipped-optimal control. Hybrid mass damper were controlled to induce seismic response of the full-scale structure under El Centro earthquake. Experimental results indicated that the proposed decentralized MR damper provided superior or equivalent performance to centralized one in spite of using damper-installed floor response for calculating input voltage to MR damper.

This paper presents optimal design procedures of mount based on a magnetorheological (MR) fluid to isolate the vibration in heavy diesel engine system. At first, frequency response and force-displacement transmissibility methods are used to get required damping force that is necessary for effective vibration isolation. From this result, a new type of high damping force engine mount is proposed and the governing equation of Bingham plastic behavior of MR fluid in flow path is mathematically derived under cylindrical coordinates. Finally, parametric design optimization featuring finite element is performed using ANSYS software to get the required damping force in MR mount system which can be used to reduce engine vibration. Damping force of the MR mount is then determined as an objective function in this analysis based on ANSYS. Furthermore, Magnetic analysis is then applied in this process.

A recently developed semi-active control system employing magneto-rheological (MR) fluid dampers is applied to vibration control of a wind excited tall building. The semi-active control system with MR fluid dampers appears to have the reliability of passive control devices and the adaptability of fully active control systems. The system requires only small power source, which is critical during severe events, when the main power source may fail. Numerical simulation studies are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the MR dampers on the third ASCE benchmark problem. Multiple MR dampers are assumed to be installed in the 76-story building. Genetic algorithm is applied to determine the optimal locations and capacities of the MR dampers. Clipped optimal controller is designed to control the MR dampers based on the acceleration feedback. To verify the robustness with respect to the variation of the external wind force, several cases with different wind forces are considered in the numerical simulation. Simulation results show that the semi-actively controlled MR dampers can effectively reduce both the peak and RMS responses the tall building under various wind force conditions. The control performance of the MR dampers for wind is found to be fairly similar to the performance of an active tuned mass damper.
