  • The effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins including adhesion strength, elongation and impact peel resistance was investigated in this study, in which MPB is an anhydride-functionalized polybutadiene prepolymer. Different molecular weights (3.1K and 5.6K) of MPB were added to diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DEGBA), an epoxy resin, to increase its impact peel strength and elongation. At various loading percent (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) of MPB in the epoxy resin, significant improvements of mechanical properties were observed. According to the comparative analysis results, the modified epoxy system with 15 wt% (3.1K) MPB exhibited the highest lap shear strength, about 40% higher than that of neat epoxy. The tensile strength and elongation steadily and simultaneously increased as the loading percent of MPB increased. The impact peel strengths at low (-40℃) and room (23℃) temperatures were substantially improved by MPB incorporation into epoxy resins. Reactive and flexible MPB prepolymer seems to construct strong nano-structured networks with rigid epoxy backbones without sacrificing the tensile and adhesion strengths while increasing impact resistance/toughness and elongation properties. For higher impact peel while maintaining adhesion and tensile strengths, approximately 10-15 wt% MPB loading in epoxy resin was suggested. Consequently, incorporation of functionalized MPB prepolymer into epoxy system is an easy and efficient way for improving some crucial mechanical properties of epoxy resins.

  • This study attempts to suggest bending reinforcement method by applying bending reinforcement to composite profile beam in which the concept of prefabrication is introduced. Profile use can be in place of framework and is effective in improvement of shear and bending strength and advantageous in long-term deflection. As a result of experiment, MPB-CB2 with improved module had higher strength and ductility than the previously published MPB-CB and MPB-LB. In case of bending reinforcement with deformed bar and built-up T-shape section based on MPB-CB2, the MPB-RB series reinforced with deformed bar were found to have higher initial stiffness, bending strength and ductility than the MPB-RT series. The less reinforcement effect of the MPB-RT series might be caused by poor concrete filling at the bottom of the built-up T-shape. In comparison between theoretical values and experimental values using minimum yield strength, the ratio between experimental value and theoretical value was shown to be 0.9 or higher except for MPB-RB16 and MPB-RT16 that have more reinforcement compared to the section, thus it is deemed that the reinforced modular composite profiled beam is highly applicable on the basis of minimum yield strength.

  • The aim of this paper is to develop a controller of multi-phase bipolar brushless DC (MPB BLDC) motors for an electric bicycle. A MPB BLDC motor has a Permanent magnet rotor in which the magnetic arrangement is radial to the shaft and integral to the rotor laminations. This technique concentrates flux, giving a higher flux density than a surface-mounted PM motor and increases reluctance torque. The stator of MPB BLBC motor has parallel winding, allowing multi-phase separate independent controllability. It gets much more high power than wye-connection at same low voltage. The conventional techniques of exited with modulation(EWM), bidirection control, and partial square wale control are Proposed with one H-bridge and two photo sensors per phase. The Proposed controller is satisfied for the limited speed control and designed for system stability Experimental results show the performance of the proposed controller of MPB BLDC motors for an electric bicycle.

  • Mastoparan B (MPB), an antimicrobial cationic peptide isolated from the venom of the hornet Vespa basalis, is a basic amphipathic α-helical peptide composed of fourteen amino acid residues. In this study, we have investigated the algicidal effect of MPB against harmful algae blooms (HABs) casative Alexandrium tamarense, Chattonella marina, Cochlodinium polykrikoides and Gymnodinium catenatum. The algicidal effect of MPB showed in the concentration of 31.3 $\mu{g}$/mL to 500 $\mu{g}$/mL against 4 HAB species and observed cell lysis or cell ecdysis by microscopy. MPB reacted more sensitive to C. marina and C. polykrikoides than A. tamarense and G. catenatum. The algicidal study of MPB against HABs will provides much insight into development of new algicidal substances.

  • Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) attacked pine was evaluated for pulp quality, chemical and physical properties, and bleachability. Chemical analyses showed that the dehydroabietic acid and total acetone extractives content were higher in the year 3 (grey) attacked MPB chips and lower in the year 5 (grey) attacked MPB chips as compared to a typical SPF (spruce/pine/fir) reference. Lignin and carbohydrate content of the MPB wood chips were comparable to the SPF. Similarly, there was little difference in kappa number, pulp yield and liquor consumption between the 3 and 5 year MPB attacked wood. Likewise there was no significant difference in the resulting tear strength, burst, or tensile strength. There appeared to be an improved bleaching response in the MPB attacked pulp as compared to the SPF reference, but this was accompanied by a slightly lower bleached pulp yield and higher bleach filtrate COD and solids content.

  • Two phase UASB reactors for treating wastewater with sulfate were operated to assess the performance and competition of organics between sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) and methane producing bacteria(MPB), and the change of characteristics of microorganisms. The reactors were fed in parallel with a synthetic wastewater of 4,000-5,000 mgCOD/L and sulfate concentration of $800-1,000\;mgSO_4/L$. In the MPR(methane producing reactor) and CR(control reactor), COD removal efficiencies were 90% and 60%, respectively, at the OLR(organic loading rate) of 6 gCOD/L, while the amount of biogas and methane content were 6.5 L/day and 80%, and 3 L/day and 50%, respectively. However, the portion of electron flow used by SRB at the OLR of 6 gCOD/L day in MPR and CR was 3% and 26%, respectively. This indicated that the increase of OLR of wastewater containing high sulfate like CR resulted in activity decrease and cell decay of MPB, while SRB was adapted immediately to new environment. The MPB activities in MPR and CR were 2 and $0.38\;kgCH_4-COD$/gVSS day at the OLR of 6 gCOD/L. This indicated hat SRB dominated gradually over MPB during long-term operation with wastewater containing sulfate as a consequence of outcompeting of SRB over MPB. In addition, the solution within AFR was maintained around pH 5.0, the MPB such as Methanothrix spp. which was very important to formation of granules was detached from the surface of granules due to the decrease of activity by limitation of substrate transportation into MPB. Therefore, a significant amount of sludge was washed out from the reactor.

  • UASB reactor was operated for treating wastewater containing high sulfate to assess their performance, competition between sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB) and methane-producing bacteria(MPB), and the change in the characteristics of microbial granules according to change of hydraulic retention time(HRT) in the reactor. The reactor was fed with a synthetic moderate strength wastes(glucose, 2000 mgCOD/l) containing high sulfate($2400mgSO_4{^{2-}}/l$). The organic loading rate(OLR) ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 gCOD/l.d as HRT maintained 15 to 30 hrs in the stage I. The COD removal efficiency was between 80 to 92%. During this period, methane yield rapidly decreased from 0.3 to 0.1 1 $CH_4$/gCODremoved. While sulfide concentration in the effluent increased from 80 to 200 mgS/l. This indicates that SRB becomes dominant over MPB at a relatively long HRT in the excess sulfate. When OLR of reactor maintained from 5 to 8 gCOD/l.d in the stage II, methane yield increased from 0.1 to 0.17 1 $CH_4$/gCODremoved regardless of decrease of COD removal efficiency. This indicates that SRB is more sensitive to the change of a short HRT than MPB. In the competition between SRB and MPB, about 30% of the removed COD was utilized by SRB at HRT of 30 hrs during the start-up period, while about 73% was used by SRB at HRT of 15hrs at the final step of second experimental stage. Whereas after shock exposure of OLR about 62% was utilized by SRB at HRT of 5hrs. It indicates that SRB is strongly suppressed by the wash-out of significant dispersed SRB since a large electron flow is distributed to the MPB. In addition, the granulation in the presence of high sulfate is unfavoured at a long HRT because of substrate transport limitations into MPB like Methanothrix spp. which is an important factor in the composition of the granules. Accordingly, granule sizes in the UASB reactor decreased with time due to weak network frame of granules by the decreased activity of MPB.

  • The gene encoding MPB83 from Mycobacterium bovis Vallee111 chromosomal DNA was amplified by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, and the PCR product was approximately 600bp DNA segment. Using T-A cloning technique, the PCR product was cloned into pGEM-T vector and the cloning plasmid pGEM-T-83 was constructed successfully. pGEM-T-83 and pET28a(+) were digested by BamHI and EcoRI double enzymes. The purified MPB83 gene was subcloned into the expression vector pET28a(+), and the prokaryotic expression vector pET28a-83 was constructed. Plasmid containing pET28a-83 was transformed into competence Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). The bacterium was induced by isopropyl-$\beta$-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) and its lysates were loaded directly onto sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), approximately 26 kDa exogenous protein was observed on the SDS-PAGE. The protein was analyzed using Western-blotting. The results indicated that the protein was of antigenic activity of M. bovis. The results were expected to lay foundation for further studies on the subunit vaccine and DNA vaccine of MPB83 gene in their prevention against bovine tuberculosis.

  • Morphotropic tetragonal and rhombohederal phase boundary(MPB) in PZT system was calculated and the effect of mechanical stress and electric field on the MPB was examined using phenomenological thermodynamic theory proposed by Devonshire. Mechanical stress and electric field was calculated to change free energies of phases and shift MPB. The stable composition range of the phase, of which spontaneous strain and spontaneous polarization aligned to the direction of tensile stress or electirc field, was expanded.

  • Domain structure and the spatial arrangement of tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in PZT ceramics at MPB composition were investigated with a transmission electron microscope. Fringe Contrast and doublet spot splitting were observed in the image mode and the selected area diffraction pattern, respectively. Besides, triplet spot splitting was also observed in the other part of the specimen. These observations indicate that both the single phase regions and the regions which are comosed of alternatively arranged tetragonal and rhombohedral domains coexist in a PZT ceramics at the MPB composition.
