  • The Korea Industrial Standards (KS) stipulates methods and test procedures for measuring the horizontal combustibility of cellular plastics exposed to small flames (KS M ISO 9772:2018) and recommendations regarding the magnetic digestion of extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) for measurement results (KS M 3808:2020). Although products that are certified to conform to KS standards must have burning characteristics (self-extinguishing), they are incinerated and spread by welds at construction sites, causing significant human and property damages. In this study, XPS produced by five companies, certified by KS, and sold in the market were purchased and tested for ignition and diffusion caused by a weld bullion at a construction site. The results showed that the five products had differences in performance. Three out of the five products were found to be self-saturated, but the other two were easily ignited and diffused, making it difficult for them to be self-extinguishing. Based on the result of this experimental investigation in line with the KS regulations, all the three types of products, including two types of products that were incinerated through weld defects, were found to be non-self-extinguishing, as specified in KS M 3808.

  • General composition, total anthocyan content, and antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of Korean purple. fleshed potatoes (varieties A-D based on coloring degree of cross sections) were investigated. Slight differences in composition content were observed among varieties. Color intensity analyzed by sensory evaluation test decreased in order of PL-14, 31, 28, 3, 17, and 6, Total anthocyanin contents differed significantly among varieties from 3 to 29 mg Per 100 g, and decreased in order of PL-28, 31, 14, 12, 5, and 3. PL-28, 31, and Jasim potatoes showed slightly higher antioxidant activities than ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. PL-28, 31, 6, and Jasim showed antimicrobial activities against three species each of Gram-positive and-negative bacteria, with highest activities observed against Bacillus subtilis and relatively high activities against E. coli.

  • This study was performed to investigate the physiological activities of stings of Gleditsia sinensis extracts. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring total phenolic contents (TPC), comet assay, and 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (RSA). Anti-diabetic activity was measured by inhibition activities on $\alpha$-glucosidase. Stings of Gleditsia sinensis extracts were prepared by extracting them with methanol and ethanol. The methanolic extracts showed the highest phenol content (1.12 g/100 g gallic acid equivalents). The $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of methanol extracts were 17.9% higher, and that of ethanol extracts were 10.3% higher at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. These results indicate that stings of Gleditsia sinensis might be potential candidates as antioxidant and anti-diabetic agents.

  • Foeniculum vulgare has long been prescribed in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of the fruits of F. vulgare on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells under non-cytotoxic ($100{\mu}g/ml$) conditions. The 80% methanol extract was subsequently partitioned successively with hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol, and the fractions so obtained were also examined for their anti-inflammatory effects. Among them, the hexane, methylene chloride, and ethyl acetate fractions inhibited nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in LPS stimulated macrophages. The methylene chloride and ethyl acetate fractions also suppressed the productions of interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$ and IL-6 by down-regulating their mRNA levels in LPS stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate fraction strongly suppressed tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ at the protein and mRNA levels in LPS stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These observations suggest that the anti-inflammatory actions of F. vulgare are due to inhibitions of the productions of NO, PGE2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

  • We carried out the Suspension PS log and gamma-gamma log in andesite and sedimentary rocks distributed near the area of Myodo-dong, Yeosu. The main purpose of this study was to find out the distribution of seismic velocities and densities and to analyze the correlation of the two rocks by comparing their geophysical well logs with rock cores. The distributions of P and S-wave velocities for two rocks represented in the study area showed a difference of about 2,000 m/sec and 1,500 m/sec with depth, respectively, while the distributions of densities had a discrepancy of about $0.35g/cm^3$ with depth. However, the results of geophysical well logs analysis were similar to the two rocks. Consequently, it is clear that these results are interpreted as a difference due to weathering rather than rock type. In particular, the RQD values showed a good correlation to geophysical well log data.

  • Titanium mesoporous materials have received increasing attention as a new photocatalyst in the field for photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds. The photocatalytic degradation of chlorothalonil by mesoporous titanium oxo-phoswhate (Ti-MCM) was investigated in aqueous suspension for comparison with $TiO_2$, (Degussa, P25) using as an effective photocatalyst of organic pollutants. Mesoporous form of titanium Phosphate has been prepared by reaction of sulfuric acid and titanium isopropoxide in the presence or n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. The XRD patterns of Ti-MCM are hexagonal phases with d-spacings of 4.1 nm. Its adsorption isotherm for chlorothalonil reached at reaction equilibrium within 60 min under dark condition with 28% degradation efficiency. The degradation ratio of chlorothalonil after 9 hours under the UV radiation condition (254 nm) exhibited 100% by Ti-MCM and 88% by $TiO_2$. However, these degradation kinetics in static state showed a slow tendency compared to that of stirred state because of a low contact between titanium matrices and chlorothalonil. Also, degradation efficiency of chlorothalonil was increased with decreasing initial concentration and with increasing pH of solution. As results of this study, it was clear that mesoporous titanium oxo-phosphate with high surface area and crystallinity could be used to photo- catalytic degradation of various organic pollutants.

  • The UHDTV system, which provides realistic service with ultra-high definite video and multi-channel audio, has been studied as a next generation broadcasting service. Since the conventional digital terrestrial transmission system is not capable to cover the increased transmission data rate of the UHDTV service, there are great necessity of researches about increase of data rate. Accordingly, the researches has been studied to increase the transmission data rate of the DVB-T2 system using dual-polarized MIMO technique and high order modulation. In order to optimize the MIMO DVB-T2 system where irregular LDPC codes are used, it is necessary to study the design of the bit mapper that matches the LDPC code and QAM symbols in MIMO channel. However, the research related to the design of the bit mapper has been limited to the SISO system. Therefore, this paper defines a new parameter that indicates the VND distribution of MIMO DVB-T2 system and performs the performance analysis according to the parameter which will be helpful for designing a MIMO bit mapper.

  • This study was designed to investigate the microglial reactions to the neurodegenerative changes in the cat retina. All experiments were performed using adult cats of both sex, weighing $2,500g\sim3,500g$. 5,7-DHT $(100{\mu}g)$ dissolved in 0.1% ascorbic acid was injected into the vitreous body. All injections were performed in one-side eye; the other side served as the control, which was injected only with 0.1% ascorbic acid. Cats were sacrificed at 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days after intravitreal injection of 5,7-DHT For light microscopy, retinae were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and processed using NDPase histochemistry. Same retinae were fixed with 1% para(formaldehyde-2.5% glutaraldehyde and processed for electron microscopy. NDPase-positive microglial cells were mainly distributed in the inner plexiform layer of the retina, and characterized by a small somata with a few slender processes, which were also extended in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner nuclear layer (INL). The intensity of the microglia stained for NDPase was abruptly increased at 7 day as compared with that of the control, and thereafter continuously sustained until 21 day, the last experimental group in this study. Under the electron microscopical observation, microglial cells in the control group exhibited elongate nucleus with perinuclear chromatin condensation, and the perikaryon was scanty. However, a few hypertrophic glial cells were frequently found at 3 days after the drug injection. By 7 day, most microglial cells directed toward the degenerated neurons in the GCL, and the number of microglial cells was slightly increased as compared with the former group. At the 14 day, most microglial cells wrapped the degenerated cells in the GCL, and a few cells showed phagocytotic features. By 21 day, most microglial cells were engaged in phagocytotic activity, and their cytoplasm was filled with the phagorytosed material. Based on the results, 5,7-DHT may act as a specific neurotoxin to the cat retina, and microglial reactions to the neuronal death are already induced in early experimental stage. These results indicate that the microglial cells in the cat retina show characteristic features as a protective effect of neural tissue.

  • This study aim to disclose a possible mechanism for the neuronal cell death induced by peripheral nerve injury following a spinal nerve ligation (SNL) as a neuropathic pain model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (270~290 g) were used for this study. Pain threshold was evaluated for their response to mechanical (von Frey hairs) stimuli 1, 3, and 7 days after a tight ligation of L5 ventral ramus. In control group, the small ganglion cells were strongly stained with routine toluidine blue (TB), whereas the large ganglion cells showed a little bit weak stainity. Each large ganglion cell is surrounded by perineuronal satellite cells. In experimental groups, small ganglion cells showing apparent degenerative changes increased on 1 day, and showed a peak in degenerative cell number at 3 days group, and decreased gradually at 7 days group. We also found a small number of large-sized ganglion cells showing mild degenerative changes. However their satellite cells ware relatively intact with no typical findings throughout this experiment. Under the electron microscope, small ganglion cells showed various stage and typical features of the dark degeneration including mitochondrial swelling.

  • This paper presents and analyzes laboratory test results of distributed translator (DTxR) for distributed frequency network (DFN) in the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV broadcasting system. The DTxR laboratory test is classified to receiving part test and transmitting part test. The receiving part test includes dynamic range, random noise, single echo, and adjacent channel interference. The transmitting part test includes quality of output signal (out-of channel emission, quality of transmitting signal, and phase noise), frequency synchronization among output signals, and TxID (Transmitter Identification) signal's affect to the legacy receiver. By the laboratory test results, the receiving part of DTxR eliminates average -2.5 dB of single echo and has average 17.5 dB at TOV (Threshold of Visibility) under random noise environment. In addition, the transmitting part of DTxR satisfies the specification of US FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and frequency difference among DTxR output signals is less than 0.001 Hz.
