  • In this work, the hydrogen storage behaviors of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/metal-organic frameworks-5 (MOF-5) hybrid composites (CNTs/MOF-5) were studied. Hydrothermal synthesis of MOF-5 was conducted by conventional convection heating using 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent. Morphological characteristics and average size of the CNTs/MOF-5 were also obtained using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pore structure and specific surface area of the CNTs/MOF-5 were analyzed by N2/77 K adsorption isotherms. The capacity of hydrogen storage of the CNTs/MOF-5 was investigated at 298 K/100 bar. As a result, the CNTs/MOF-5 had crystalline structures which were formed by hybrid synthesis process. It was noted that the CNTs/MOF-5 can be potentially encouraging materials for hydrogen adsorption and storage applications at room temperature.

  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of significant interest because of their high porosity, which facilitates their utilization in gas storage and catalysis. To enhance their current properties in these applications, it is necessary to elucidate the interactions between molecules in a confined environment that differ from those in bulk conditions. Herein, we study the confined molecular interaction by investigating the solvent-dependent photophysical properties of two different-sized molecules inside MOF-5. Ruthenium tris-bipyridine (Rubpy) and coumarin 153 (C153) are encapsulated in MOF-5. Rubpy with MOF-5 (Rubpy@MOF) is prepared by building MOF-5 around it, resulting in limited space for solvent molecules in the pores. The smaller C153 is encapsulated in the preformed MOF-5 (C153@MOF) by simply soaking the MOF in a concentrated C153 solution. C153@MOF permits more space for solvent molecules in the pore. Their characteristic absorption and emission spectra are examined to elucidate the confined molecular interactions. Rubpy@MOF and C153@MOF exhibit different spectral shifts compared to the guest molecules under bulk conditions. This discrepancy is attributed to the different micro-environments inside the pores, derived from confined host-guest interactions in the interplay of solvent molecules.

  • Statistical design of experiments was used to optimize the MOF-5 synthesis process. A mixture design was employed to optimize precursor concentration. The optimal composition of three chemical materials, terephthalic acid, zinc acetate dihydrate, and N,N-dimethylformamide for MOF-5 synthesis was determined by extreme vertices design methods as follows; 1 mol : 2.7 mol : 40 mol. A multilevel factorial design was selected to screen the significance of synthesis reaction conditions such as temperature, time, and stirring speed. Statistical analysis results suggested excluding stirring speed from further investigation. Using a central composition design, the synthesis time and temperature were optimized. The quadratic model equation was derived from 13 synthesis experiments. The model predicted that MOF-5 synthesized at 119 ℃ for 10.4 h had the highest crystallinity.

  • In this study, we demonstrated that, although hydrogen molecules can be adsorbed onto the adsorbent such as MOF and MC itself, the loading of noble metal such as Pt is necessary to enhance the $H_2$ storage capacity since $H_2$ molecules can be dissociatively adsorbed on Pt metal and migrated to high-surface-area adsorbent via the primary spillover. In addition, the hybrid material have been prepared coupling MOF-5 with Pt/MC through carbon bridges formed by sucrose polymerization/carbonization. That this material showed the highest $H_2$ uptake at room temperature and about 100 bar is believed to be associated with the secondary spillover effect. Thus, such a strategy is very promising in developing $H_2$ storage technology using porous adsorbents. However, further experiments should be carried out to explore the choice of bridge carbon, the hybridization method, the dispersion technique of noble metals, etc.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the properties of mixtures of mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) and various organic sources such as livestock manure compost (LMC), dried compost of poultry manure (CPM), dried food waste powder (FWP) and amino acid by-product fertilizer (ABF) and their influences on growth of lettuce and Chinese cabbage. The content of N, P2O5 and K2O of mixture of MOF, LMC and FWP (MLF) was 3.6~3.9%, 2.1~2.2% and 1.3~1.4%, respectively. Lettuce dry weight of MLF3 treatment blending with MOF (60%), LMC (10%) and FWP (30%) was increased by about 29% than that of MOF. The content of N, P2O5 and K2O of mixture of MOF, CPM, FWP and ABF (MCFA) was 4.5~4.7%, 1.7~1.9% and 1.3~1.4%, respectively. Compared to MOF, growth factors of lettuce and Chinese cabbage in the MCFA treatments were not significantly deferent. These results indicated that MLFs and MCFAs, the mixtures of respectively organic sources and MOF, could be applied as orgnic fertilizer in the cultivation of lettuce and Chinese cabbage, and were expected that LMC and ABF might be used as another sources of organic fertilizer.

  • We have fabricated the supercapacitor composed of porous activated carbon, metal-organic framework (MOF) with polymer based solid state electrolyte as a "ion gel" and characterized its electrochemical behaviour as a function of the MOF contents. The electrochemical properties of the supercapacitor were analyzed via cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge test. As a results, the supercapacitor based on porous activated carbon/MOF composite showed the highest capacitance value at 0.5 wt% of MOF contents and decreased capacitance with increase MOF contents over the 0.5 wt%. Consequently, the porous activated carbon/MOF composite based supercapacitor is applicable to various aspect for energy storage device.

  • Metal organic frameworks (MOF) have generated considerable interests as a potential candidate for hydrogen storage owing to their extremely high surface-to-volume ratio and low density. In this study, Pt nanoparticles of about 3 nm in size were introduced outside MOF-5 [$Zn_4O$(1,4-benzenedicarbocylate)3], which was then encapsulated with hydrophobic microporous carbon black (denoted CB@Pt/MOF-5) in order to enhance hydrogen uptake capacity without decreasing the specific surface area and hydrostability. To study the chemical composition, morphology, crystal information, and properties of the synthesized material, a variety of techniques is employed, including WXRD, XPS, ICP-AES, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and N2 adsorption-desorption, confirming the formation of novel hybrid composite designated CB@Pt/MOF-5 with highly crystalline structure, large specific surface area and pore volume. In addition, $H_2$ storage capacity for resulting material was measured using magnetic suspension microbalance at 77 and 298 K under high-pressure condition, and the hydrostability was also tested by exposing the sample to 33% relative humidity at $23^{\circ}C$ and measuring XRD as a function of time.

  • Using a density functional theory calculation including van der Waals (vdW) corrections, we report that $H_2$ adsorption in a cubic-crystalline microporous metal-organic framework (MOF-5) leads to volume shrinkage, which is in contrast to the intuition that gas adsorption in a confined system (e.g., pores in a material) increases the internal pressure and then leads to volumetric expansion. This extraordinary phenomenon is closely related to the vdW interactions between MOF and $H_2$ along with the $H_2$-$H_2$ interaction, rather than the Madelung-type electrostatic interaction. At low temperatures, $H_2$ molecules adsorbed in the MOF-5 form highly symmetrical interlinked nanocages that change from a cube-like shape to a sphere-like shape with $H_2$ loading, helping to exert centrosymmetric forces and hydrostatic (volumetric) stresses from the collection of dispersive interactions. The generated internal negative stress is sufficient to overcome the stiffness of the MOF-5 which is a soft material with a low bulk modulus (15.54 GPa).

  • Statistical design of experiments was performed to optimize MOF-235 synthesis process. Concentrations of terephthalic acid (TPA), iron (III) chloride hexahydrate, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethanol were important factors to develop the crystal structure of MOF-235. MOF-235 was synthesized with various concentrations of the listed chemicals above and the crystallinity was measured by XRD. The effect of the composition on the synthesis of MOF-235 was evaluated using a statistical analysis. For the variance analysis using F-test, the concentration of ethanol showed the greatest effect on the crystallinity and TPA the least influential. A regression model for predicting the crystallinity of MOF-235 was derived and the prediction results for two synthetic variables were presented using contour plots. Finally, the crystallinity was predicted by a mixture method with $FeCl_3$, ethanol and DMF.
