  • In this work, tunable capacitors using a finger-type electrode are designed and characterized for frequency-agile RF circuit applications. Their top electrodes with different area and line width are designed in types of the finger for a long conducting perimeter which results in enhanced fringing-electric fields in order to improve their tunability. The tunable varactors were fabricated on a quartz substrate employing a multi-layer dielectric of a para/ferro/para-electric thin film. Compared to the conventional capacitor, finger-type capacitors are characterized in terms of effective capacitance and tunablility. Their effective capacitance and tunability with the long perimeter increase 24~40% and 7~12%, respectively, due to enhanced fringing electric fields from 1 to 2.5 GHz, compared to the conventional ones.

  • In this paper, a tunable capacitor like an interdigital one is presented for low-voltage applications. In order to reduce operation voltage by enhancing fringing electric fields, two finger-patterned electrodes are vertically separated by employing a multi-layer thin film dielectric of a para-/ferro-/para-electrics without spacing between electrodes. The proposed tunable capacitor was fabricated on a quartz wafer and its characteristics are analyzed in terms of effective capacitance and tunability with a function of applied voltages, compared to the conventional interdigital capacitor (IDC). At 8V and 2 GHz, the proposed tunable capacitor shows the tunability of 18 % that is 10.3 % higher than that of the compared one.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional (3-D) low-loss and wide-band BPF based on low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) has been presented for mm-wave wireless communication applications. The proposed BPF is designed in a 6-layer LTCC substrate. The double patch resonators are fully integrated into the LTCC dielectrics and vertical via and planar CPW transitions are designed for interconnection between embedded resonators and in/output ports and MMICs, respectively. The designed BPF was fabricated in a 6-layer LTCC dielectric. The fabricated BPF shows a centre frequency (fc) of 53.23 GHz and a 3dB bandwidth of 14.01 % from 49.5 to 56.9 GHz (7.46 GHz). An insertion loss of -1.56 dB at fc and return losses below -10 dB are achieved. Its whole size is $4.7{\times}1.7{\times}0.684mm^3$.

  • A multiprocessor microprocessor named SMPC(scaleable multiprocessor chip) that contains tow IU (integer unit) is presented in this paper. It can execute multiple instructions from several tasks exploiting task-level parallelism that is free from instruction dependencies, and provide high performance and throughput on both single program and multiprogramming environments. the IU is a 32-bit scalar processor expecially designed to boost up the performance of string manipulations which are frequently used in RDBMS(relational data base management system) applications. A memory management unit and a data cache shared by two IUs improve the performance and reduce the chip area required. ETH SMPC is implemented in VLSI circuit by custom design and automated design tools.

  • A new cyclic peptide (six-membered amino acid), gamakamide-E (L-Leu-L-Met (SO)-L-Me-Phe-L-Leu-D-Lys-L-Phe), was isolated as a strongly bitter tasting compound from cultured oysters, Crassostrea gigas. The molecular formula of $C_{43}H_{61}N_7O_8S$ was deduced from high resolution fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (HR FAB-MS) ($[M+H]^+$ m/z 836.4356 ${\Delta}$= -2.4 mmu). Its unique structure including a hydantoin structure was firstly elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Stereochemistries of constituent amino acids were determined by chiral high performanced liquid chromatography analysis of natural and synthesized peptides.

  • In this paper, we propose a hypervisor for embedded systems based on ARM microprocessor. The proposed hypervisor makes it possible to run several real-time kernels concurrently on a single embedded system by virtualizing its microprocessor. With assistance of MMU, it supports virtual memory which enables each guest operating system has its own address space. Exploiting the fact that most embedded systems use memory-mapped I/O device, it provides a mechanism to distribute an external interrupt to virtual machines properly. It also achieves load balancing through live migration which moves a running virtual machine to other embedded system. Unlike other para-virtualization techniques, minor modifications are needed to run it on the hypervisor. Extensive performance measurement studies are conducted to show that the proposed hypervisor has enough potentiality of its real-world application.

  • This paper compares the maritime education of two traditionally maritime countries, Korea and the Philippines, specifically, in their maritime transportation education. The subjects of this review focus on Mokpo National Maritime University (MMU) and the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA). The paper presents the curricular and training programs of both institutions and shows the differences in the curriculum designs and methodology of delivery as contained in the requirements of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping 1978, as amended in 1995 (STCW 95). It also illustrates the social climate of the two countries and the attitude of maritime community in relation with the maritime programs offered by the institutions towards the quality of the fresh maritime graduates.

  • Many critical applications require accurate real-time human action recognition. However, there are many hurdles associated with capturing and pre-processing image data, calculating features, and classification because they consume significant resources for both storage and computation. To circumvent these hurdles, this paper presents a recognition machine learning (ML) based system model which uses reduced data structure features by projecting real 3D skeleton modality on virtual 2D space. The MMU VAAC dataset is used to test the proposed ML model. The results show a high accuracy rate of 97.88% which is only slightly lower than the accuracy when using the original 3D modality-based features but with a 75% reduction ratio from using RGB modality. These results motivate implementing the proposed recognition model on an embedded system platform in the future.

  • This paper compares the marine engineering courses of two maritime institutions: Mokpo National Maritime University of Korea in the East Asia region and Philippine Merchant Marine Academy in the Southeast Asia region. It shows examines educational marine engineering programs, along with the different divisions and courses at each college. It demonstrates a divergence in methodologies and course offerings to cultivate competitive graduates. The comparative assessment completed is intended to offer broader knowledge on how each institution tackles the requirements of the STCW, and to meet the present and future demands of the maritime industry. Different course offerings are compared along with the units and hours allocated to each subject, and the differences in marine engineering academic and training requirements to graduate. Students must satisfactorily earn 150 units to complete their choice of major. Statistical procedures were used in this assessment and analysis from Excel programs.
