Lignocellulolytic enzymes play a crucial role in efficiently converting lignocellulose into valuable platform molecules in various industries. However, they are limited by their production yields, costs, and stability. Consequently, their production by producers adapted to local environments and the choice of low-cost raw materials can address these limitations. Due to the large amounts of olive stones (OS) generated in Morocco which are still undervalued, Penicillium crustosum, Fusarium nygamai, Trichoderma capillare, and Aspergillus calidoustus, are cultivated under different fermentation techniques using this by-product as a local lignocellulosic substrate. Based on a multilevel factorial design, their potential to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes during 15 days of dark incubation was evaluated. The results revealed that P. crustosum expressed a maximum total cellulase activity of 10.9 IU/ml under sequential fermentation (SF) and 3.6 IU/ml of β-glucosidase activity under submerged fermentation (SmF). F. nygamai recorded the best laccase activity of 9 IU/ml under solid-state fermentation (SSF). Unlike T. capillare, SF was the inducive culture for the former activity with 7.6 IU/ml. A. calidoustus produced, respectively, 1,009 ㎍/ml of proteins and 11.5 IU/ml of endoglucanase activity as the best results achieved. Optimum cellulase production took place after the 5th day under SF, while ligninases occurred between the 9th and the 11th days under SSF. This study reports for the first time the lignocellulolytic activities of F. nygamai and A. calidoustus. Furthermore, it underlines the potential of the four fungi as biomass decomposers for environmentally-friendly applications, emphasizing the efficiency of OS as an inducing substrate for enzyme production.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional status of antioxidant vitamins in relation to serum malondialdehye(MDA) level in postmenopausal women with common occurance of cardiovascular disease(CVD). Data about general characteristics including smoking, drinking and exercise status, dietary intake and serum level of antioxidant vitamins, and serum MDA level were collected from eighty-five postmenopausal women. Mean serum MDA level was 1.62$\pm$0.03nmol/ml, and general characteristics and serum lipid profiles were not significantly different among the three group: low MDA(<1.45nmol/ml), midium MDA(1.45-1.74nmol/ml) and high MDA($\geq$1.74nmol/ml). Total mean vitamin A intake was 472.8$\pm$37.7RE, 68% of RDA, vitamin C intake was 134.3$\pm$8.7mg, 192% of RDA and vitamin E intake was 8.6$\pm$0.5mg, 86% of RDA for Korean. In takes of antioxidant vitamins from the diet were not significantly different among the three groups. However significant negative correlation(r=-0.242, p<0.05) was observed between vitamin E intake and serum MDA level in total subjects. Total mean serum vitamin A, $\beta$-carotene and vitamin C level were 0.59$\pm$0.01$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 0.25$\pm$0.01$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 9.02$\pm$0.28$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, respectively. Total mean serum vitamin E and vitamin E/total cholesterol level were 9.15$\pm$0.42$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 4.09$\pm$0.17$\mu\textrm{g}$/mg, respectively. Serum antioxidant vitamins levels were not significantly different among the three groups. However serum vitamin C and E level were negatively correlated to serum MDA level. We can conclude that it will be helpful for postmenopausal women with common occurance of CVD to improve nutritional status of antioxidant vitamins by increasing intakes of antioxidant vitamins, especially vitamin C and E. Since March 1988 we have performed 133 arteriovenous fistulae for hemodialysis in 121 patients with chronic renal failure. Of the 133 cases of arteriovenous fistulae, follow-up evaluation was possible for 80 cases which performed in 69 patients. The relation between blood flow and patency rate and duration of arteriovenous fistula was examined. The overall 6 - 12 - 18 -, and 24 - month patency rates of arteriovenous fistulae were 82%, 64%a, 62%, and 57%, respectively. The maximum blood flow was 150 ~ 350ml /min[mean 217.1$\pm$44.27]. The patency duration was evaluated in patients divided into three groups owing to maximum blood flow through the fistulae. The range of maximum blood flow was 150 ~ 200ml /min for group A, 200 ~ 250ml /min for group B, and above 250ml /min for group C. The mean duration of the patency was 10.7$\pm$7.60 months in group A, 14.9$\pm$9.82 months in group B, and 21.6$\pm$11.16 months in group C[p<0 05]. With increased maximum blood flow, the duration of the patency was longer in group A than group B and C [r=0.39, p<0. 05]. The maintenance blood flow was 100 ~ 250ml /min[mean 179.2$\pm$37.26 ml/min]. When the maintenance blood flow was above 200ml /min, long-term patency rate was higher than the group below 200ml /min[r=0.48, p<0.01]. In the same range of blood flow, patency duration of the patients with using their own blood vessels were longer than the patients with using vascular graft for A-V fistula. We concluded that the patency of the arteriovenous fistulae was closely correlated with the blood flow through the fistulae.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), postanesthetic shivering and pain are common postoperative patient complaints that can result in adverse physical and psychological outcomes. Some antiemetics are reported to be effective in the management of postoperative pain and shivering, as well as PONV. We evaluated the efficacy of dexamethasone added to ramosetron on PONV, shivering and pain after thyroid surgery. Methods: One hundred and eight patients scheduled for thyroid surgery were randomly allocated to three different groups: the control group (group C, n = 36), the ramosetron group (group R, n = 36), or the ramosetron plus dexamethasone group (group RD, n = 36). The patients were treated intravenously with 1 and 2 ml of 0.9% NaCl (group C); or 2 ml of 0.15 mg/ml ramosetron plus 1 ml of 0.9% NaCl (group R); or 2 ml of 0.15 mg/ml ramosetron plus 1 ml of 5 mg/ml dexamethasone (group RD) immediately after anesthesia. Results: Incidence of nausea and the need for rescue antiemetics, verbal rating scale (VRS) 1 hour pain value, ketorolac consumption, and incidence of shivering were significantly lower in group R and group RD, than in group C (P < 0.05). Moreover, these parameters were significantly lower in group RD than in group R (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Combination of ramosetron and dexamethasone significantly reduced not only the incidence of nausea and need for rescue antiemetics, but also the VRS 1 hour pain value, ketorolac consumption, and the incidence of shivering compared to ramosetron alone in patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
Since around 1980 apple rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea has become prevalent throughout the growing areas in Korea, during which period chemical controls have been executed with no notable improvement. Results of investigations on resistance of the causal fungus to its control chemical are as followings; The susceptible fungal isolates showed no mycelial growth at $150\;{\mu}g/ml$ of benomyl whereas the resistant isolates showed 7-13 mm growth at $300\;{\mu}g/ml$ and 6-8 mm at $2,400\;{\mu}g/ml$ of this fungicide. At the latter high concentration, spore germination of the resistant isolates was 5-9% while that of the susceptible isolates was 0%. Within the range of $20-2,400\;{\mu}g/ml$ tested, the susceptible isolates were unable to form pycnidia, but the resistant isolates formed abundant pycnidia at the lower concentration with decreasing pycnidia along with the higher concentration.

This study was conducted to investigate the changes in physicochemical and microbiological properties during fermenting process of farm-made organic liquid fertilizer made of the mixture of organic materials such as blood meal and molasse during fermenting process. The pH level of organic liquid fertilizer during the ermentation decreased from 7.2 to 4.3. The EC of organic liquid fertilizer was increased from 13.9 dS/m to 99.3 dS/m during the fermentation. The total population of aerobic bacteria decreased from $8.2{\times}10^5$ cfu/ml to $3{\times}10^4$ cfu/ml, but Bacillus spp. increased from $2.1{\times}10^2$ cfu/ml to $4.2{\times}10^3$ cfu/ml during the fermentation. Bacterial isolates were obtained from organic liquid fertilizers and identified by fatty acid-base typing. The Genus Bacillus was dominant as fermenting proceeded. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profile showed changes of bacterial communities in organic liquid fertilizers.

Two formulations of tiropramide {(${\pm}$)${\alpha}$-(benzoylamino)-4-[2-(diethylamino)-ethoxy]-N,N-dipropyl-benzenepropanamide hydrochloride}, an antispasmodic agent, were orally administered to 16 healthy Korean male volunteers by Latin crossover design with the purpose of evaluating bioeqivalence and phamacokinetics of tiropramide. Tiropramide in human plasma was determined by a gas chromatography/nitrogen phosphorus detector. Detection limit of tiropramide was 5 ng/ml. C$\_$max/ values in test and reference formulations were 93.9 ${\pm}$ 54.3 and 96.4 ${\pm}$ 51.6 ng/ml, respectively. AUC$\_$0\longrightarrowlast/ and AUC$\_$0\longrightarrowinf/ were, respectively, 330.7 ${\pm}$ 193.9 and 349.5 ${\pm}$ 205.3 ng.hr/ml for test formulation, 348.9 ${\pm}$ 207.7 and 380.8 ${\pm}$ 239.0 ng.hr/ml for reference formulation. Terminal half-life was 2.3-2.6 hr. Bioavailability differences for C/aub max/ and AUC$\_$0\longrightarrowlast/ were 2.48% and 5.22%, respectively. Minimum detection differences were less than 20% in both C$\_$max/ AUC. Based on this results, two formulations of tiropramide were considered to be bioequivalent
A rapid and simple method for the determination of histamine by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection was established. 9-Fluorenylmethyl chloroformate(FMOC) was used as fluorescent derivative reagent. The optimum conditions for the derivatization such as pH, reaction time and the concentration of FMOC were investigated. Linearity of calibration curve was obtained between $0.1{\mu}g/ml$ and $0.5{\mu}g/ml$(r=0.992) and the limit of detection was $0.01{\mu}g/ml$.
A simple and specific method for determination of methyltestosterone (MT) has been established by a gas chromatography/mass selective detector and applied in plasma of healthy male volunteers received a single oral dose of 50 mg MT $(Testo^{TM}\;tablets,\;25\;mg)$ for bioavailability test. This method involves using liquid-liquid extraction of the sample with diethyl ether and derivatization with MSTFA. MT showed good resolution in this condition. The detection limit of quantitation was 5 ng/ml. A good linearity (r>0.996) was obtained at the range of 5-250 ng/ml of MT. Intra-day precision and accuracy were 2.76-12.56% and 0.39-8.01 %, and inter-day precision and accuracy were 2.29-17.69% and 0.42-7.99%, respectively. The established method was applied on bioavailability test of MT in human volunteers. The value of $AUC_{0\;to\;last}$ to last was $264.5{\pm}123.9\;ng{\cdot}hr/ml$ and that of $AUC_{0\;to\;inf}$ was determined to be $275.2{\pm}126.5\;ng{\cdot}hr/ml$. The values of $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ were $95.9{\pm}67.1\;ng/ml$ and $1.13{\pm}0.9\;hr$, respectively. The mean elimination half-life $(t_{1/2})$ was $4.4{\pm}0.9\;hr$. This analytical method is suitable and useful for the pharmacokinetics and bioequivalence studies of MT.
To examine the effect of Xuefuzhuyutang on the metastasis of cancer, the following experiments were carried out. Before the main experiments, the cytotoxicity was measured by putting Xuefuzhuyutant sample in HT1080. Then zymography was made to examine the change of gelatinolytic activity. Western blotting was carried out to examine the changes of Fos, Jun, Ets, Erk, md JNK. In vitro invasion assay with transwells coated by collagen and matrigel was carried out. From the above results the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The experimental result about cytotoxicity of Xuefuzhuyutang agaitst HT1080 was a below. The stained cell count after being treated by by Xuefuzhuyutang sample $400{\mu}g/ml$ for 24 hours was 0.9% of total cells, and the stained cell count by Xuefuzhuyutang sample $100{\mu}g/ml$ was 1.5% of total cells. Both were near the level of control group which showed 0.6% stained. 2. The result of collagenase assay was as below. In Xuefuzhuyutang sample $400{\mu}g/ml$, MMP2 was reduced as compared with TPA control group, and the band of MMP-9 induced by TPA disapappeared. In Xuefuzhuyutang samle $800{\mu}g/ml$ both bands of MMP-2 and MMP-9 disapeared. 3. The results of western blots for Jun, Fos, Ets, Erk, JNK were a below. In Xuefuzhuyutang sample $200{\mu}g/ml$, Ets was reduced, and Jun, Fos were increased. 4 The result of invasion assay was as below. The number of cells which migrated across transwell membrane in Xuefuzhuyutang-treated group was less than that of control(+TPA) group. From the above results, it was concluded that Xuefuzhuyutang might inhibit the activity of collagenase not by the MMP-2, MMP-9 promoter but by the other way.
