  • In this paper, we propose an iterative detection and decoding scheme for the LDPC coded multiuser uplink massive-MIMO systems. We consider the simple maximal ratio combining (MRC) detector and LDPC decoder. We formulate the soft output of MRC detector and the relation between the extrinsic informations of the detector and decoder. The performance improvement of the proposed iterative detection and decoding scheme is shown by computer simulation.

  • In spatially multiplexed MIMO systems that enable high data rate transmission over wireless communication channels, the spatial demultiplexing at the receiver is a challenging task and various demultiplexing methods have been developed. Among the previous methods, maximum likelihood detection with QR decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MLD), sphere decoding (SD), QOC, and MOC schemes have been reported to achieve a (near) maximum likelihood (ML) hard decision performance. In general, however, the reliability of soft output of these schemes is not satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a method which enhances the reliability of soft output. By computer simulations, we demonstrate the improved performance by the proposed method.

  • This paper analyzes the tree expansion for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection in the viewpoint of hardware implementation. The tree expansion is to calculate path metrics of child nodes performed in every visit to a node while traversing the detection tree. Accordingly, the tree-expansion unit (TEU), which is responsible for such a task, has been an essential component in a MIMO detector. Despite the paramount importance, the analyses on the TEUs in the literature are not thorough enough. Accordingly, we further investigate the hardware complexity of the TEUs to suggest a guideline for selection. In this paper, we focus on a pair of major ways to implement the TEU: 1) a full parallel realization; 2) a transformation of the formulae followed by common subexpression elimination (CSE). For a logical comparison, the numbers of multipliers and adders are first enumerated. To evaluate them in a more practical manner, the TEUs are implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process, and their propagation delays, gate counts, and power consumptions were measured explicitly. Considering the target specification of a MIMO system and the implementation results comprehensively, one can choose which architecture to adopt in realizing a detector.

  • This letter proposes a simplified maximum likelihood detection (SMLD) scheme to improve the detection performance of multiple-input multiple-output receivers. The SMLD detects V streams according to the first detected V sub-streams. Through an ML test, the most probable stream is selected. Moreover, to detect the layer with the worst post-detection SNR accurately, reverse ordering is applied to the SMLD. Simulation results show that the performance of the Vertical Bell Laboratories layered space-time (V-BLAST) system can be improved by adopting the SMLD technique. In the case of reverse ordering, the SMLD can achieve a similar ML performance with significant reduction in computational complexity.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel soft output generation method for spatially multiplexed MIMO systems. The receiver complexity of spatially mutiplexed MIMO system is in proportion to the number of candidate vectors. The ML signal detection method considers all possible vectors as candidates, thereby achieving a high performance, however, its complexity is very high. Low complexity receiver techniques involving a small number of candidate vectors, provide soft output values of low reliability. In this paper, we propose a method to improve reliability of the soft output values obtained using a small number of candidate vectors.

  • This paper proposes a novel detection scheme using a radial basis function (RBF) network in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) environment. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed MIMO-RBF receiver, simulations are performed over the rich-scattering fading channel. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme shows the similar bit-error rate (BER) performance of a maximum likelihood detection (MLD) and outperforms Vertical-Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time using minimum-mean-square-error nulling (VBLAST-MMSE) as well as VBLAST using zero-forcing nulling (VBLAST-ZF). Moreover, we investigate the effect on the performance of the number of RBF center with two modulation formats (BPSK and QPSK) and different number of transmit and receive antennas. The performance of the proposed detector is verified with respect to an initialization-rate of RBF centers.

  • We propose a complexity reduced Lattice Reduction(LR) scheme for MIMO detection under time varying fading environments. It is found that for successive MIMO transmission instances, the integer matrix P after LR decomposition remains the same or only a few elements of the matrix P are slightly changed. Based on this feature, we perform LR reduction by setting the initial values for P matrix for the decomposition to be the one obtained in the previous instance not starting from the identity matrix. Simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme drastically reduces overall complexity of LR reduction compared to the conventional scheme for various system parameters under time varying channels. We also show that the proposed scheme can be applied to Seysen LR as well as LLL(Lenstra, Lenstra, and Lavasaz)-LR.

  • In time division duplex (TDD)-based multiuser massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, the uplink channel is estimated and the results are used in downlink for signal detection. Owing to noisy uplink channel estimation, the downlink channel should also be estimated for accurate signal detection. Therefore, recently, a blind method was developed, which assumes the use of a linear high-power amplifier (HPA) in the base station (BS). In this study, we extend this method to a scenario with a nonlinear HPA in the BS, where the Bussgang decomposition is used for HPA modeling. In the proposed method, the average power of the received signal for each user is a function of channel gain, large-scale fading, and nonlinear distortion variance. Therefore, the channel gain is estimated, which is required for signal detection. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed theoretically. The simulation results show superior performance of the proposed method compared to that of the other methods in the literature.

  • We propose a very low complexity lattice reduction (LR) algorithm for MIMO detection in time varying channels. The proposed scheme reduces the complexity by performing LR in a block-wise manner. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the temporal correlation of the channel matrices in a block and its impact on the unimodular matrices during LR process. From this, the proposed scheme can skip a number of redundant LR processes for consecutive channel matrices and performs a single LR in a block. The simulation results investigated in this letter reveal that the proposed detection scheme requires only 43.4% multiplications and 17.3% divisions of LLL-LR and only 50.2% multiplications and 68.2% divisions of the conventional adaptive LR with almost no performance degradation.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for transmit antenna selection in a multi-input multi-output(MIMO) spatial multiplexing system with per antenna rate control(PARC) and an ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) receiver. The active antenna subset is determined at the receiver and conveyed to the transmitter using feedback information on transmission rate per antenna. We propose a serial decision procedure consisting of a successive process that tests whether antenna selection gain exists when the antenna with the lowest pre-processing signal to interference and noise ratio(SINR) is discarded at each stage. Furthermore, we show that 'reverse detection ordering', whereby the signal with the lowest SINR is decoded at each stage of successive decoding, widens the disparities among fractions of the whole capacity allocated to each individual antenna and thus maximizes a gain of antenna selection. Numerical results show that the proposed reverse detection ordering based serial antenna selection approaches the closed-loop MIMO capacity and that it induces a negligible capacity loss compared with the heuristic selection strategy even with considerably reduced complexity.
