The study on the uniform error property of codes has been restricted to additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, which is generally referred to as geometrical uniformity. In this paper, we extend the uniform error property to space-time codes in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel by directly treating the probability density functions fully describing the transmission channel and the receiver. Moreover, we provide the code construction procedure for the geometrically uniform space-time trellis codes in fast MIMO channels, which consider the distance spectrum. Due to the uniform error property, the complexity of code search is extensively reduced. Such reduction makes it possible to obtain the optimal space-time trellis codes with high order states. Simulation results show that new codes offer a better performance in fast MIMO channels than other known codes.

Achievable sum rate and energy efficiency (EE) are investigated for the massive multiple-input multiple-output (Massive MIMO) downlink with channel aging in the time varying Ricean fading channel. Specifically, the expression of the achievable sum rate of the system for the maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoder with aged channel state information (CSI) in the time varying Ricean fading channel is first presented. Based on the expression, the effect of both channel aging and the Ricean factor on the power scaling law are studied. It is found that the transmit power of base station (BS) is scaled down by $1/{\sqrt{M}}$(where M is the number of the BS antennas) when the Ricean factor K is equal to zero (i.e., time varying Rayleigh fading channel), indicating that aged CSI does not affect the power scaling law. However, the transmit power of the BS is scaled down by 1/M for the time varying Ricean fading channel (where $K{\neq}0$) indicating that the Ricean factor affects the power scaling law and sum rate, and channel aging only leads to a reduction of the sum rate. Second, the EE of the system is analyzed based on the general power consumption model. Both the theoretical analysis and the simulations show that the channel aging could degrade the sum rate and the EE of the system, and it does not affect the power scaling law.

This paper presents a processor that performs QR decomposition (QRD) as well as Lattice Reduction (LR) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. By sharing the operations commonly required in QRD and LR, the hardware complexity of the proposed processor is reduced significantly. In addition, the proposed processor is designed based on a multi-cycle architecture so as to reduce the hardware complexity. The proposed processor is implemented with 139k logic gates in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and its latency is $5{\mu}s$ for $8{\times}8$ MIMO preprocessing both QRD and LR where the operating frequency is 117MHz.

Interference alignment (IA) is a data transmission technique that achieves the maximum degrees-of-freedom (DoF) in the multiuser interference channel for high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). However, most prior works on IA are based on the unrealistic assumption that perfect and global channel-state information (CSI) is available at all transmitters and receivers. In this paper, we propose the efficient design of feedback framework for IA that substantially suppresses the feedback overhead. While the feedback overhead in the conventional IA quadratically increases with K, the proposed feedback scheme supports the sequential exchange of computed IA precoders between transmitters and receivers and reduces the feedback overhead that linearly scales with K. Moreover, we analyze the residual interference due to the quantization error in limited feedback and propose the ordered IA algorithm that selects IA pair to minimize the sum residual interference in given channel realizations.

In this paper, we propose a non-convex compressed sensing(NCCS)-based channel state information(CSI) feedback scheme for massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) systems. Combining the random vector quantization(RVQ), the proposed scheme permits a transmitter to obtain CSI with acceptable accuracy under substantially reduced feedback load. Furthermore, it recovers CSI from fewer measurements than that of existing convex compressed sensing(CCS)-based schemes even if the measurements are inaccurate and incomplete. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves higher throughput than both existing CCS-based feedback scheme and random vector quantization(RVQ) feedback scheme with the same feedback load.

In this paper, we propose transceiver design strategies for the two-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interfering broadcast channel where inter-cell interference (ICI) exists in addition to inter-user interference (IUI). We first formulate the generalized zero-forcing interference alignment (ZF-IA) method based on the alignment of IUI and ICI in multi-dimensional subspace. We then devise a minimum weighted-mean-square-error (WMSE) method based on "regularizing" the precoders and decoders of the generalized ZF-IA scheme. In contrast to the existing weighted-sum-rate-maximizing transceiver, our method does not require an iterative calculation of the optimal weights. Because of this, the proposed scheme, while not designed specially to maximize the sum-rate, is computationally efficient and achieves a faster convergence compared to the known weighed-sum-rate maximizing scheme. Through analysis and simulation, we show the effectiveness of the proposed regularized ZF-IA scheme.

We propose an optimal number of transmit antennas which maximizes energy-efficiency (EE) in multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system with the maximal ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. With full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), we find a closed form solution by partial differential function with proper approximations using average channel gain, independence of individual channels, and average path loss. With limited feedback, we get a solution numerically by the bisection with approximations in the same manner, and analyze an effect of feedback bits on the optimal number of transmit antennas. Simulation results show that the optimal numbers of transmit antenna getting from proposed closed form solution and exhaustive search are nearly same.

The feasibility conditions of interference alignment (IA) are analyzed for reverse duplex systems, in which one cell operates as downlink (DL) while the other cell operates as uplink (UL) assuming one-sid base station (BS) cooperation. Under general multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna configurations, a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for one-shot linear IA are established, i.e., linear IA without symbol or time extension. In several example networks, optimal sum degrees of freedom (DoF) is characterized by the derived necessary condition and sufficient condition. For some special class of networks, a sufficient condition is established in a more compact expression, which also yields the necessary and sufficient condition. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IA does not only achieve larger DoF but also significantly improves the sum rate in the practical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.

In this paper, a dense cellular network is considered in which each base station equipped with multiple antennas simultaneously communicates with multiple single-antenna users. Based on limited feedback, each user feeds back its quantized channel state information (CSI) to its associated transmitter, and the transmitter broadcasts multiple data streams prepared for the scheduled users using a space-division multiple access scheme. As the amount of CSI is limited at the transmitter, the downlink throughput increases with the number feedback bits. However, the increased number of feedback bits requires the correspondingly increased amount of uplink resources. Thus, an appropriate balance between the downlink throughput and the uplink resource usage should be considered in realistic systems. A net spectral efficiency defined in this context is used in this paper, and the optimal number of feedback bits that maximizes the net spectral efficiency is analyzed. This paper particularly focuses on the case when the received signal power is much smaller than the noise power.

In this paper, a coding algorithm is proposed for multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) systems to improve the reception performance in fading conditions without reducing the bandwidth efficiency. The space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme that is one of the commonly used for MU-MIMO systems is vulnerable to the fading. The space time block code (STBC) scheme that is used to overcome the fading has a disadvantage of reduced throughput. The proposed MU-MIMO system first encodes transmitted symbols by linear dispersion code (LDC) which is less vulnerable to the fading and increases the throughput in proportional to the number of transmit antennas. Then, the LDC coded symbols are pre-coded by the result of singular value decomposition (SVD) of the estimated channel gain. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme compared with the conventional algorithms by computer simulations.
