  • In some sections of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway, severe congestion can be observed during rush hours and on specific days. The subway operators have been conducting regular surveys to measure the level of congestion on trains: the results are then used to make plans for congestion reduction. However, the survey has so far focused just on train' congestion and has been unable to determine non-recurring congestion due to special events. This study develops an algorithm to estimate the platform congestion rate by time using individual public transportation card data. The algorithm is evaluated by comparison of the estimated congestion rate and the ground truth data that are actually observed at non-transfer subway stations on Seoul subway line 2. The error rates are within ${pm}2%$ and the performance of the algorithm is fairly good. However, varying walking times from gates to platforms, which are applied to both non-peak periods and peak time periods, are needed to improve the algorithm.

  • Purpose: Traditionally, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) is used for neoadjuvant chemoradiation in locally advanced rectal cancer. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) was later developed for more conformal dose distribution, with the potential for reduced toxicity across many disease sites. We sought to use the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine trends and predictors for IMRT use in rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: We queried the NCDB from 2004 to 2015 for patients with rectal adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiation to standard doses followed by surgical resection. Odds ratios were used to determine predictors of IMRT use. Univariable and multivariable Cox regressions were used to determine potential predictors of overall survival (OS). Propensity matching was used to account for any indication bias. Results: Among 21,490 eligible patients, 3,131 were treated with IMRT. IMRT use increased from 1% in 2004 to 22% in 2014. Predictors for IMRT use included increased N stage, higher comorbidity score, more recent year, treatment at an academic facility, increased income, and higher educational level. On propensity-adjusted, multivariable analysis, male gender, increased distance to facility, higher comorbidity score, IMRT technique, government insurance, African-American race, and non-metro location were predictive of worse OS. Of note, the complete response rate at time of surgery was 28% with non-IMRT and 21% with IMRT. Conclusion: IMRT use has steadily increased in the treatment of rectal cancer, but still remains only a fraction of overall treatment technique, more often reserved for higher disease burden.

  • This study is a railway accident investigation statistic study with the purpose of prediction and classification of accident severity. Linear regression models have some difficulties in classifying accident severity, but a logistic regression model can be used to overcome the weaknesses of linear regression models. The logistic regression model is applied to escalator (E/S) accidents in all stations on 5~8 lines of the Seoul Metro, using data mining techniques such as logistic regression analysis. The forecasting variables of E/S accidents in urban railway stations are considered, such as passenger age, drinking, overall situation, behavior, and handrail grip. In the overall accuracy analysis, the logistic regression accuracy is explained 76.7%. According to the results of this analysis, it has been confirmed that the accuracy and the level of significance of the logistic regression analysis make it a useful data mining technique to establish an accident severity prediction model for urban railway casualty accidents.

  • When a train is delayed because of a disturbance, the time interval between successive trains increases and high-frequency metro lines can become unstable. Time interval control is therefore necessary in preventing such instabilities. In this paper, we propose an optimal interval control algorithm that is easy-to-implement and that guarantees system stability. In the proposed method, the controlled trains are determined from the time interval deviations between successive trains; the control algorithm for staying time is designed by use of a discrete traffic model to ensure an optimal time interval between successive trains. The results of a computer simulation are also given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a new optical switching system as a infrastructure of the BcN, in which the high traffic volume will be expected due to the multimedia service, like P2P services. Because the JET protocol, the most popular protocol in OBS (Optical Burst Switching) research area, has high blocking probability for burst, it prevents commercialization in real network for its low throughput in TCP layer. To improve high blocking rate in OBS network, we segment large network into small network and perform burst scheduling to avoid burst loss. By using proposed scheme, Internet provider can reduce network deployment cost in Metro network as well as large mesh core networks

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a new method of PSD(Platform Screen Door) ads using animated image for efficiency, based on the theoretical background that moving objects have a stronger visual attractiveness effect than static objects. For this, we analyze the relationship between the screen door and the train, then derive the positional and visual elements which help to create efficient animated images. Based on this analysis, we made an example and applied into 3D program to confirm the implementation process of the animated PSD ads. As the result, the research shows that it is possible to produce a new type of PSD ads that can show dynamic visual effects and can give diversity to the PSD advertising media through the combination of the images using time difference.

  • A track circuit has used stably more than 100 years for detecting train position, but solution of track circuit sort circuit incapacity due to a rust is necessary for side line in station yard, coast line and level crossing for conventional line in rural line. Domestically, Axle Counter System(ACS) has partially used for Hot Box System for high speed line and turnout for CBTC system. In contrast, most of countries has used ACS not only trunk line but also rural line and its application has increased for metro, electric car and industrial railway. In this paper, we has verified the operating status of ACS which installed with existing track circuit through log analsis to implement pilot application in mail track and turnout in station yard. And interface test with interlocking system has conducted at Obong shunting yard, as well as Cheongju station and has analyzed test result. Based on a test result, we made fail safe design, manufacturing skill and established system requirement specification for the smooth operation and maintenance.

  • Due to the extension of communication ways (metro, highways, railways), hence, to improve traffic flow imposes often the difficult crossing that generally drive to the construction of underground works (tunnel, water conveyance tunnel...) plays a major role in the redevelopment of urban areas. This study is focused on the assessment of the interaction response of parallel tunnels, so this study uses the results from the simulation of two tunnels to illustrate a few observations that may aid in practical designs. In this article, simultaneous drilling of highway's twin tunnels is simulated by means of Finite Element Method (FEM) implemented in Plaxis program. So the treated subject appears in a setting of geotechnical where one can be to construct several tunnels sometimes in a ground of weak mechanical characteristics. The objective of this study is to simulate numerically the interaction effects caused by construction of two parallels tunnels. This is an important factor in the study of the total answer of the problem interaction between parallels underground works. The importance of the effects transmitted is function of several parameters as the type of the works, and the mechanical characteristics (tunnel size, depth, and the relative position between two tunnels, lining thickness...). This article describes numerical analyses of two parallels tunnels interaction. This study will be applied to a real case of a section tunnel T4 of the highway East-West (Algeria); the study presented below comprises a series of numerical simulations of two tunnels using the computer program Plaxis which is used in the analyses is based on Finite Element Method.

  • To understand environmental characteristics and contamination assessment of the Namsan Park soil in Seoul, we divided the Namsan map into 33 sectors and sampled mixed soil in depth 0${\sim}$15 cm, in 5${\sim}$10 points at the sites. We analyzed soil samples collected at 21 sectors twice on May and September. The results were as follows. The hue color ranges of the Namsan soil were 2.5YR${\sim}$10YR, the value ranges were 1${\sim}$4, the water rates were 3.1${\sim}$22.3 and the Ignition losses were 3.4${\sim}$10.4%. The average concentration of Cu and Pb were determined 3.374 and 15.000 mg/kg, Cd and As showed very low level. The mean concentrations of Zn and Ni were showed 103.290 and 11.649 mg/kg and this amount is not different from the nationalwide mean in 2005. The mean pH showed 5.41. The Zn, Ni and Cd in the soil of the circular road of Namsan showed 1.33, 1.48, 1.46 times higher than the other sector of the Namsan soil. The corelation coefficient between water rate and ignition loss were 0.720 and the correlation coefficient between Cu and Pb, Cu and Zn showed 0.827, 0.694 respectively. There was weak corelationship between pH and Zn. The Uniformity coefficient (Uc) of all the survey sites was determined below 5 in the range of 1.5${\sim}$4.4.

  • We study seismically induced, anti-plane strain wave motion in a non-homogeneous geological region containing tunnels. Two different scenarios are considered: (a) The first models two tunnels in a finite geological region embedded within a laterally inhomogeneous, layered geological profile containing a seismic source. For this case, labelled as the first boundary-value problem (BVP 1), an efficient hybrid technique comprising the finite difference method (FDM) and the boundary element method (BEM) is developed and applied. Since the later method is based on the frequency-dependent fundamental solution of elastodynamics, the hybrid technique is defined in the frequency domain. Then, an inverse fast Fourier transformation (FFT) is used to recover time histories; (b) The second models a finite region with two tunnels, is embedded in a homogeneous half-plane, and is subjected to incident, time-harmonic SH-waves. This case, labelled as the second boundary-value problem (BVP 2), considers complex soil properties such as anisotropy, continuous inhomogeneity and poroelasticity. The computational approach is now the BEM alone, since solution of the surrounding half plane by the FDM is unnecessary. In sum, the hybrid FDM-BEM technique is able to quantify dependence of the signals that develop at the free surface to the following key parameters: seismic source properties and heterogeneous structure of the wave path (the FDM component) and near-surface geological deposits containing discontinuities in the form of tunnels (the BEM component). Finally, the hybrid technique is used for evaluating the seismic wave field that develops within a key geological cross-section of the Metro construction project in Thessaloniki, Greece, which includes the important Roman-era historical monument of Rotunda dating from the 3rd century A.D.
