The sizing treatments of PAN-based carbon fiber surfaces were carried out in order to improve the interfacial adhesion in the carbon fibers/nylon6 composite system. The parameter to characterize the wetting performance and surface free energy of the sized fibers were determined by a contact angle method. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were investigated using critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). The cross-section morphologies of sized CFs/nylon6composites were observed by SEM. As the experimental results, it was observed that silane-based sizing treated carbon fibers showed higher surface free energies than other sizing treatments. In particular, the KIC of the sizing-treated carbon fibers reinforced composites showed higher values than those of untreated carbon fibers-reinforced composites. This result indicated that the increase in the surface free energy of the fibers leads to the improvement of the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers/nylon6 composites.

This study dealt with the suppression of interfacial reaction between Nb and MoSi$_2$ for the fabrication of high toughness Nb/MoSi$_2$ laminate composites, based on the results of a thermodynamical estimation. Especially, the effect of ZrO$_2$ particle on the interfacial reaction of Nb/MoSi$_2$ bonding materials has been examined. Nb/MoSi$_2$ bonding materials have been successfully fabricated by alternatively stacking matrix mixtures and Nb sheets and hot pressing in the graphite mould. The addition of ZrO$_2$ particle to MoSi$_2$ matrix is obviously effective for promoting both the interfacial reaction suppression and the sintered density of Nb/MoSi$_2$ bonding materials, since it is caused by the formation of ZrSiO$_4$ in the MoSi$_2$-ZrO$_2$ matrix mixture. The interfacial shear strength of Nb/MoSi$_2$ bonding materials also decreases with the reduction of interfacial reaction layer associated with the content of ZrO$_2$ particle and the fabrication temperature.
In this work, the effect of chemical treatments on surface properties of SiC was investigated in thermal and mechanical interfacial behaviors of SiC/PMMA nanocomposites. The acid/base value, contact angles, and FT-IR analysis were performed for the study of surface characteristics of the SiC studied. The thermal stabilities of the SiC/PMMA nanocomposites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$) measurements. As a result, the acidically treated SiC (A-SiC) had higher acid value than that of untreated SiC (V-SiC) or basically treated SiC (B-SiC). The acidic solution treatment led to an increase in surface free energy of the SiC, mainly due to the increase of its specific component. Thermal and mechanical interfacial properties of the SiC/PMMA nanocomposites, including initial decomposition temperature (IDT), $K_{IC}$, and $G_{IC}$ had been improved in the acidic treatment on SiC. This was due to the improvement in the interfacial bonding strength, resulting from the acid-base interfacial interactions between the fillers and polymeric matrix.

Interfacial shear stresses have been determined for countercurrent stratified flow of air and water in a nearly-horizontal rectangular channel, based upon measurements of pressure drop, gas velocity profiles and mean film thickness. A dimensionless correlation for the interfacial friction factor has been developed as a function of the gas and liquid Reynolds numbers. Equivalent surface roughnesses for the interfacial friction factor have been calculated using the Nikuradse correlation and have been compared with the intensity of the wave height fluctuation on the interface. The results show that the interfacial shear stress is mainly affected by turbulent mixing near the interface due to the wave motion rather than by the roughened surface.

3-ply Mg/Al/STS clad-metal was fabricated by the roll bonding process. An interfacial reaction layer was formed at the Mg/Al interface at and above $300^{\circ}C$ whereas no interfacial reaction layer was observed up to $400^{\circ}C$. The effect of the interfacial reaction layer on the mechanical and fracture properties in clad metals after heat treatments were investigated The chemical compositions were analyzed at the Mg/Al interface by an Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). A tension test was performed to examine the interfacial cracking properties. The Mg layer fractured first, causing a sudden drop of the stress and Al/STS layer continued to deform until the final fracture. Periodic cracks and crack propagation was observed at the reaction layer between Mg and Al.
In this work, the effect of fiber array direction including $0^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}$ was investigated for mechanical properties of basalt fiber-reinforced composites. Mechanical properties of the composites were studied using interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) measurements. The cross-section morphologies of basalt fiber-reinforced epoxy composites were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the surface properties of basalt fibers were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From the results, it was observed that acid treated basalt fiber-reinforced composites showed significantly higher mechanical interfacial properties than those of untreated basalt fiber-reinforced composites. These results indicated that the hydroxyl functional groups of basalt fibers lead to the improvement of the mechanical interfacial properties of basalt fibers/epoxy composites in the all array direction.
The interfacial adhesion energy between resist and a substrate is very important due to resist pull-off problems during separation of mold from a substrate in nanoimprint process. And effect of substrate surface roughness on interfacial adhesion energy is very important. In this paper, we have treated glass wafer surface using $CF_4$ gas for increase surface roughness and it has tested interfacial adhesion properties of UV resin/glass substrate interfaces by 4 point bending test. The interfacial adhesion energies by bare, 30, 60 and 90 sec surface treatments are 0.62, 1.4, 1.36 and 2 $J/m^2$, respectively. The test results showed quantitative comparisons of interfacial fracture energy (G) effect of glass wafer surface roughness.

Interfacial cracks bonded with dissimilar transversely isotropic piezoelectric media that are subjected to combined anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loading are analyzed. The problem is formulated using complex function theory, from which the Hilbert problem is derived. By solving the Hilbert problem, the general form solution is obtained. Using this solution, closed-form solutions for one or two finite cracks as well as a semi-infinite crack are obtained, for the problem in which one concentrated mechanical and electrical load is imposed on the crack surface. This solution could be used as a Green's function to generate solutions to other problems with the same geometry but different loading conditions.
Various characteristics of a thin liquid film in its vapor-phase are investigated using the molecular dynamics technique. Local distributions of the temperature, density, normal and tangential pressure components, and stress are calculated for various film thicknesses and temperature levels. Distributions of local stresses change considerably with respect to film thicknesses, and interracial regions on both sides of the film start to overlap with each other as the film becomes thinner. Integration of the local stresses, i.e., the surface tension, however, does not vary much regardless of the interfacial overlap. The minimum thickness of a liquid film before rupturing is estimated with respect to the calculation domain sizes and is compared with a simple theoretical relation.

A measurement technique of interfacial velocity in air-water separated flow by particle tracking velocimetry using an infrared camera (IR-PTV) was developed. As infrared light with wavelength in the range of 3-5 um could hardly penetrate water, IR-PTV can selectively visualize only the tracer particles existing in depths less than 20 um underneath the air-water interface. To validate the measurement accuracy of the IR-PTV technique, a measurement of the interfacial velocity of the air-water separated flow using Styrofoam particles floating in water was conducted. The interfacial velocity values obtained with the two different measurement techniques showed good agreement with errors less than 5%. It was found from the experimental results obtained using the developed technique that with increasing air velocity, the interfacial velocity proportionally increases, likely because of the increased interfacial stress.
