  • Reaction kinetics between 4,4'-dihexyl methane diisocyanate($H_{12}MDI$) and n-hexanol in toluene with dibutyltin dilaurate(DBTDL) as catalyst was studied by experimental measurements and mathematical modeling. Experiments were carried out at various temperatures, catalyst concentrations and [NCO]/[OH] ratios, and the reaction kinetics were described by two second-order reactions, the one between NCO and OH leading to urethane and the other between urethane and NCO leading to allophanate. The rate constants were estimated by the Runge-Kutta 4th-order method. Experiments and mathematical simulations showed a good agreement for various experimental conditions. The [allophanate]/[urethane] ratios at 90% conversion of initial NCO were estimated to be over 20% for most conditions employed in the present study, indicating that allophanate formation might significantly affect the properties of urethane polymers.

  • The MDI(4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate) was mixed with PPG, PEG and trimethylolpropane(TMP) respectively to prepare polyurethane resin. The various physical properties were measured for the mixtures. The gel-time was shortened by adding of PEG and TMP The molecular weight made a greater influence on the gel-time than the number of functional groups. The NCO-OH reaction was more active and faster than the NCO-NCO reaction. The hardness was influenced by crosslinking-density and molecular structure. The NCO-OH reactions yielded the flexible films and the NCO-NCO reactions yielded the brittle films. The increase of crystallinity and shrinkage induced the low adhesion ratio but the adding of TMP induced the high adhesion ratio. The flame-retardancy was influenced by quantity and kinds of flame-retardant. IXOL B-251 was the most excellent among the flame-retardants employed in this study. TCCP was partially separated because of the lack of solubility.

  • This study was conducted to improve the bond strength of plywood bonded with F/U molar ratio urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins modified with the selected FGMDI prepolymer contents for various purposes. The amount of FGMDI was mixed with liquid UF resin at 0 wt% (as control), 2 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 25 wt%, and 50 wt% based on the resin solids. As results, in bonding strength, plywood with F/U molar ratio of 1.4 showed the highest value in Type 2 test and all molar ratio UF resins modified with over 25 wt% of the FGMDI showed more than $11kgf/cm^2$, which was satisfied the minimum requirement of KS standard, $7.5kgf/cm^2$, after Type1.5 testing. As F/U molar ratio was increased and the FGMDI addition in the UF resin was increased, average reduction rate of Type 1.5 bonding strength compared with Type 2 was significantly decreased.

  • The effects of catalyst and blocking reagents(BR) on the blocking reactions of TDI and MDI in the preparation of polyurethane varnishes have been studied. It was found that certain types of catalysts, such as 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane(DABCO) and tetramethyl guanidine(TMG), were necessary to complete the NCO blocking reactions. Blocking rate of TMG was shown much faster than that of DABCO. Reactivity increased with the increase of TMG concentration, at least to the concentration of 1%. In case of DABCO, the 0.25% concentration of catalyst showed the highest reactivity. In order to study the steric effects of BR on the blocking reactions, phenol, p-cresol, m-cresol, o-cresol, 2,4-xylenol were used as blocking reagents. As expected, BR which has less steric hindrance showed higher reactivity. The increase in BR concentration and reaction temperature increased the productivity of polyurethanes in this reaction system.

  • Woodfiber insulation board can be considered as a one of the key material for low energy consumption, comfortable and safety construction of residential space because of its eco-friendly and high thermal insulation performance. This study was carried out to investigate the formaldehyde (HCHO) total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) emission properties and combustion shapes by flame test of low density fiberboards (LDFs) prepared with different adhesives. HCHO TVOC emission and combustion properties of LDFs prepared by melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), phenol formaldehyde (PF), emulsified methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (eMDI) and latex resin adhesives were measured by desiccator method, 20 L chamber method, and flame test, respectively. As results, LDFs manufactured by MUF, eMDI and latex resin adhesives satisfied the Super $E_0$ grade of HCHO emission performance except PF resin. Furthermore, TVOC emission of all LDFs were satisfied the Korean indoor air quality standard (below $400{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$). Especially, LDF with eMDI resin adhesive showed the lowest HCHO and TVOC emissivity, that $0.14mg/{\ell}$, $12{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$, respectively. However, eMDI emitted the small amount ($3{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$) of toluene in VOC components. In the flame test, LDF with MUF resin adhesives showed the most favorable shape after flame test compare to LDFs prepared other adhesives. Based on HCHO and TVOC emission, and combustion shapes, MUF resin adhesive may be recommended to prepare LDF for insulation purpose.

  • Hibiscus sabdariffa L., a tropical beverage material, is used commonly as in folk medicine against hypertension, pyrexia, inflammation, liver disorders, and obesity. However, the mechanism by which Hibiscus sabdariffa L. modulates adipogenic differentiation is remained to be elusive. This report was designed to investigate the inhibitory effect of Hibiscus extract on insulin signaling pathway during adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were differentiated with isobutylmethylxanthine, dexamethasone, and insulin (MDI) and followed by the addition of Hibiscus extract. Treatment with Hibiscus resulted in a decrease of lipid droplet accumulation, which was suppressed by PI-3 kinase inhibitor wortmannin in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Also, Hibiscus extract markedly attenuated the mRNA expression of adipogenic transcriptional factor PPAR${\gamma}$ and adipogenic hormon Leptin during adipogenesis. However, it did not affect the expression of adiponectin in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes differentiated with MDI mixture. Furthermore, Adipogenic differentiation by MDI mixture increased the phosphorylation and expression of PI3-Kinase and Akt in 3T3 preadipocytes, which was markedly suppressed by Hibiscus extract treatment. Taken together, our results suggest that Hibiscus extract suppressed the adipogenic differentiation of 3T3 preadipocytes through activation of PI3-Kinase and Akt signaling pathway.

  • In this study, the effects of a methanol (MeOH) extract of Carduus crispus L. (Asteraceae) on adipogenesis was investigated in 3T3-L1 cells. To differentiate preadipocytes to adipocytes, confluent 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were treated with a hormone mixture, which included isobutylmethylxanthine, dexamethasone, and insulin (MDI). The methanol extract of C. crispus significantly decreased fat accumulation by inhibiting adipogenic signal transcriptional factors in MDI-induced 3T3-L1 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In MTT assays and on PI-staining, methanol extract of C. crispus inhibited the proliferation of 3T3-L1 cells during mitotic clonal expansion (MCE). The anti-adipogenic effect of the Carduus extract seemed to be associated with the upregulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways within the first 2 days after MDI treatment. These results suggest that methanol extract of C. crispus might be beneficial for the treatment of obesity.

  • This study was designed to explore developmental evaluation in healthy full-term, at risk preterm and full-term infants. Specifically the purposes of the study were to investigate Psychomotor Developmental Index(PDI) and Mental Developmental Index(MDI) based on Bayley Scales of Infant Development(1993). The subjects were 72 infants, 24 each for healthy full-term infants, 24 each for at risk preterm infants and 24 each for at risk full-term infants such as having neonatal asphyxia, hypoxic ischemic brain damage, respiratory distress syndrome. The data were analyzed through Kruskal-Wallis test and correlations to examine healthy full-term, at risk pre-term and at risk full-term infants. Results showed that there were significant differences among healthy full-term, at risk pre-term and at risk full-term infants in PDI and MDI. On the correlation with PDI and MDI, infants showed significant correlations. Early interventions for developmental improvement are required for functional outcome in these infants.

  • To investigate the adhesion effect of various kinds and contents of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanates (pMDIs) on adhesion performance, wood adhesives (A-1~5) were synthesized and characterized. As results, when the amount of pMDI increased in adhesives, the dry tensile strength was found to be proportionally increased sustaining at around $16.0{\sim}21.6kgf/cm^2$. The polyurethane (PU) resin, which used M11S as a source of pMDI showed the best wet tensile strength at $11.9kgf/cm^2$ and cyclic boil tensile strength at $8.1kgf/cm^2$, which satisfied the requirement of over $7kgf/cm^2$. Thermal properties of the rice powder (RP) based polyurethane resins were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Thermal stability of polyurethane resins increased to $250^{\circ}C$ with adding pMDIs. The more pMDI (M5S) was added to adhesive, the higher thermal stability of the resin was observed by TGA.
