Silicon, especially silicon in the form of SiO2, is a major component of rocks. Final spent fuel storages, which are being designed, are located in suitable rock formations in the Earth's crust. Reduction of the uncertainty of silicon neutron scattering and capture is needed; improved silicon evaluations have been recently produced by the ORNL/IAEA collaboration within the INDEN project. This paper deals with the nuclear data validation of that evaluation performed at the LR-0 reactor by means of critical experiments and measurement of reaction rates. Large amounts of silicon were used both as pure crystalline silicon and SiO2 sand. The critical moderator level was measured for various core configurations. Reaction rates were determined in the largest core configuration. Simulations of the experimental setup were performed using the MCNP6.2 code. The obtained results show the improvement in silicon cross-sections in the INDEN evaluations compared to existing evaluations in major libraries. The new Thermal Scattering Law for SiO2 published in ENDF/B-VIII.0 additionally reduces the discrepancy between calculation and experiments. However, an unphysical peak is visible in the neutron spectrum in SiO2 obtained by calculation with the new Thermal Scattering Law.
Radiation dose enhancement is a method of increasing the cross section of interaction, thus increasing the deposited dose. This can contribute to linear energy transfer, LET and relative biological effectiveness, RBE. Previous studies on dose enhancement have been mainly focused on X, ${\gamma}-rays$, but in this study, the dose enhancement was analyzed for proton using Monte Carlo simulation using MCNP6. Based on the mathematical modeling method, energy spectrum and relative intensity of spread out Bragg-peak were calculated, and evaluated dose enhancement factor and dose distribution of dose enhancement material, such as aurum and gadolinium. Dose enhancement factor of 1.085-1.120 folds in aurum, 1.047-1.091 folds in gadolinium was shown. In addition, it showed a decrease of 95% modulation range and practical range. This may lead to an uncertain dose in the tumor tissue as well as dose enhancement. Therefore, it is necessary to make appropriate corrections for spread out Bragg-peak and practical range from mass stopping power. It is expected that Monte Carlo simulation for dose enhancement will be used as basic data for in-vivo and in-vitro experiments.
As the IAEA has applied integrated safeguards and a state level approach to member states, the importance of national inspection has increased. However, the requirements for national inspection for some member states are different from the IAEA safeguards. In particular, the national inspection for the ROK requires on-site U concentration analysis due to a domestic notification. This research proposes an on-site U concentration analysis (OUCA) method for UO2 pellets using gamma spectroscopy to satisfy the domestic notification requirement. The OUCA method calculates the U concentration of UO2 pellets using the measured net X-ray counts and declared 235U enrichment. This research demonstrates the feasibility of the OUCA method using both MCNP simulation and experiment. It simulated and measured the net X-ray counts of different UO2 pellets with different U concentrations and 235U enrichments. The simulated and measured net X-ray counts were fitted to polynomials as a function of U concentration and 235U enrichment. The goodness-of-fit results of both simulation and experiment demonstrated the feasibility of the OUCA method.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has designed a Hybrid-Low Power Research Reactor (H-LPRR) which can be used for critical assembly and conventional research reactor as well. It is an open tank-in-pool type research reactor (Thermal Power: 50 kWth) of which the most important applications are Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), Radioisotope (RI) production, education and training. There are eight irradiation holes on the edge of the reactor core: IR (6 holes for RI production) and NA (2 holes for NAA) holes. In order to quantify the elemental concentration in target samples through the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), it is necessary to measure neutron spectrum parameters such as thermal neutron flux, the deviation from the ideal 1/E epithermal neutron flux distribution (α), and the thermal-to-epithermal neutron flux ratio (f) for the irradiation holes. In this study, the MCNP6.1 code and FORTRAN 90 language are applied to determine the parameters for the two irradiation holes (NA-SW and NA-NW) in H-LPRR, and in particular its α and f parameters are compared to values of other research reactors. The results confirmed that the neutron irradiation holes in H-LPRR are designed to be sufficiently applied to neutron activation analysis, and its performance is comparable to that of foreign research reactors including the TRIGA MARK II.

The radial uniformity of neutron irradiation in silicon ingots for neutron transmutation doping (NTD) at HANARO is examined by both calculations and measurements. HANARO has two NTD holes named NTD1 and NTD2. We have been using the NTD2 hole for 5 in. NTD commercial service, and we intend to use two holes for 6 in. NTD. The objective of this study is to predict the radial uniformity of 6 in. NTD at the two holes. The radial neutron flux distributions inside single crystal and noncrystal silicon loaded at the NTD2 hole are calculated by the VENTURE code. For NTD1, the radial distributions of the reaction rate for a 6 in. NTD with a neutron screen are calculated by MCNP, and measured by gold wire activation. The results of the measurements are compared with those of the calculations. From the VENTURE calculation, it is confirmed that the neutron flux distribution in the single crystal silicon is much flatter than that in the non-crystal silicon. The non-uniformities of the measurements for radial neutron irradiation are slightly larger than those of the calculations. However, excluding local dips in the measurements, the overall trends of the distributions are similar. The radial resistivity gradient (RRG) for a 5 in. silicon ingot is estimated to be about $1.5\%$. For a 6 in. ingot, the RRG of a silicon ingot irradiated at HANARO is predicted to be about $2.1\%$. Also, from the experimental results, we expect that the RRG would not be larger than $4.4\%$.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the radiation effect on damage when the external shield of the spent nuclear fuel transport cask is damaged due to impact as the cause of an unexpected accident. The neutron and gamma-ray intensities and spectra are calculated using the ORIGEN-Arp module in the SCALE 6.2.4 code package(1) and then using MCNP6.2(2) code calculate the dose rate. In order to evaluate the radiation dose according to the size of damage caused by external impact, various sized holes of 0.3~13.7% are assumed in the outer shield of the cask to evaluate the sensitivity to the dose. In the case of radiation source leakage, damage to the nuclear fuel assembly is assumed to be up to 6% based on overseas test cases. When only the outer shield is damaged, the maximum surface dose is calculated as 3.12E+03 mSv/hr. However, if the radiation source is leaked due to damage to the nuclear fuel assembly, it becomes 7.00E+05 mSv/hr which is about 200 times greater than the former case.

In order to transport spent resin in a high integrated container made of high density polyethylene, a method for determining transportation grade by radioactivity analysis was developed. Ratios of radioisotopes in spent resin were derived from radioactivity analysis on spent resin. Associated curie-to-dose factors were determined to estimate radioisotope inventory from surface dose rates of spent resin. From the results, Activity limit of type A package was derived to be 1.19 TBq for HIC, and the corresponding surface dose rate was found to be 124.2 mSv/h.

This paper presents preliminary analysis and results on IASCC sensitivity of a core shroud in the reactor pressure vessel. First, neutron irradiation flux distribution of the reactor internals was calculated by using the Monte Carlo simulation code, MCNP6.1 and the nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VII.1. Second, based on the neutron irradiation flux distribution, temperature and stress distributions of the core shroud during normal operation were determined by performing finite element analysis using the commercial finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, considering irradiation aging-related degradation mechanisms. Last, IASCC sensitivity of the core shroud was assessed by using the IASCC sensitivity definition of EPRI MRP-211 and the finite element analysis results. As a result of the preliminary analysis, it was found that the point at which the maximum IASCC sensitivity is derived varies over operating time, initially moving from the shroud plate located in the center of the core to the top shroud plate-ring connection brace over operating time. In addition, it was concluded that IASCC will not occur on the core shroud even after 60 years of operation (40EFPYs) because the maximum IASCC sensitivity is less than 0.5.

Copper is an important structural material in various nuclear energy applications, therefore the correct knowledge of copper cross sections is crucial. The presented paper deals with a validation of different copper transport libraries by means of activation of selected samples. An intense 252Cf(sf) source with a reference neutron spectrum was used as a neutron source. After irradiation, the samples were measured using a high purity germanium detector and the dosimeter reaction rates were inferred. These experimental data were compared with MCNP6 calculations using CENDL-3.1, JENDL-4.0, ENDF/B-VII.1, ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.2 and JEFF-3.3 evaluated Cu transport libraries. The experiment specifically focuses on 58Ni(n,p)58Co, 93Nb(n,2n)92mNb, 197Au(n,g)198Au and 55Mn(n,g)56Mn dosimetry reactions. Evaluated activation cross sections of these dosimetric reactions were taken from the IRDFF-II library. The best library performance depends on the energy region of interest.

Background: Cosmic ray-induced particles can lead to failure of semiconductors packaged for export during air transport. This work performed MCNP 6.2 simulations to optimize shielding against neutrons and protons induced by cosmic radiation Methods and materials: The energy spectra of protons and neutrons by incident angle at the flight altitude were determined using atmospheric cuboid model. Various candidates for the shielding materials and the geometry of the Unit Load Device Container were evaluated to determine the conditions that allow optimal shielding at all sides of the container. Results: It was found that neutrons and protons, at the flight altitude, generally travel with a downward trajectory especially for the particles with high energy. This indicated that the largest number of particles struck the top of the container. Furthermore, the simulation results showed that, among the materials tested, borated polyethylene and stainless steel were the most optimal shielding materials. The optimal shielding structure was also determined with the weight limit of the container in consideration. Conclusions: Under the determined optimal shielding conditions, a significantly reduced number of neutrons and protons reach the contents inside the container, which ultimately reduces the possibility of semiconductor failure during air transport.
