  • Form the pure Maxwellian distribution(kT= 1.42MeV), the effects upon calibration factors of encapsulating a $^{252}Cf$ spontaneous fission neutron source were investigated to establish a standard neutron field in the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI). A Monte Carlo code MCNP was used in simulating the encapsulation SR-Cf-100 and SR-Cf-1273 to be real conditions. The anisotropy(FI) and fluence-to-dose equivalents conversion factors$(H/{\Phi})$ were evaluated and compared with other results. As the results, the FI was determined to be 1.061 at ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$ with ${\pm}0.2%$ statistical error and the $(H/{\Phi})$ was evaluated to be $333.9 [pSv\;cm^2]\;with\;{\pm}0.5%$ statistical error, which is lower by 1.8% than that recommended by the ISO 8529. This means physically that the neutron spectrum of the unmoderated $^{252}Cf$ source in KAERI is a little more softened than that by the ISO.

  • PET images used in medical diagnoses are created using positron emitting radionuclides. The radiation used for imaging is generated at 0.511 MeV by p-annihilation. The CSDA range is the distance the particle radiation flew physically, and it is different from the range shown in PET images. This study proposes a novel method that uses radiological criteria to measure this range. The experiment was conducted by applying the MCNP6 simulation to positron emitting nuclides 18F, 11C, 13N, and 15O. Radiological criteria were based on the location of the p-annihilation event, which is also the image signal. Results showed the radiological range of positrons to be 2.3, 3.9, 5.0, and 7.9 mm for 18F, 11C, 13N, and 15O, respectively. The higher the positron energy, the larger its difference from the CSDA range. Positron emitting nuclide is being developed and studied as a nuclide for dosimetry or radiotherapy. Further research needs to be conducted into various positron ranges.

  • Background: Phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals that are widely used in the production of items of daily life such as in polyvinylchloride plastics, insecticides, and medical devices. This study aimed to determine the association between phthalate exposure and shellfish consumption using data from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) cycle 3 (2015-2017), which is a nationally representative survey. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the KoNEHS cycle 3 data of 3,333 (1,526 men and 1,807 women) adults aged more than 19 years. Data related to the variables of sociodemographic factors, health-related behaviors, dietary factors, seafood consumption frequency, and urinary phthalate metabolites concentrations were collected. The concentrations of urinary phthalate metabolites of all the participants were divided into quartiles to define high and low concentration groups based on the 75th percentile concentration. A χ2 test was conducted to analyze the distribution of independent variables. To analyze the relationship between shellfish consumption and phthalate exposure, the odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using logistic regression analysis. Results: Total adults with shellfish consumption frequency of over once a week showed the following adjusted ORs for high concentrations of the following metabolites compared with the group that consumed shellfish once a week or less: 1.43 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-2.06) for mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), 1.43 (95% CI: 1.01-2.03) for mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (MECPP), 1.57 (95% CI: 1.10-2.24) for ∑di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (∑DEHP), 2.01 (95% CI: 1.46-2.77) for mono-carboxyoctyl phthalate (MCOP), 1.56 (95% CI: 1.11-2.18) for mono-carboxy-isononly phthalate (MCNP), and 2.57 (95% CI: 1.85-3.56) for mono (3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP). Conclusions: The concentrations of urinary phthalate metabolites (MEOHP, MECPP, ∑DEHP, MCOP, MCNP, and MCPP) were higher in adults with a higher frequency of shellfish consumption.

  • The evaluation of radioactivated components of heavy-ion accelerator facilities affects the safety of radiation management and the exposure dose for workers. and this is an important issue when predicting the disposal cost of waste during maintenance and dismantling of accelerator facilities. In this study, the FLUKA code was used to simulate the proton treatment device nozzle and classify the radio-nuclides and total radioactivity generated by each component over a short period of time. The source term was evaluated using NIST reference beam data, and the neutron flux generated for each component was calculated using the evaluated beam data. Radioactive isotopes caused by generated neutrons were compared and evaluated using nuclide information from the International Radiation Protection Association and the Korea Radioisotope association. Most of the nuclides produced form of beta rays and electron capture, and short-lived nuclides dominated. However, In the case of 54Mn, which is a radioactive product of iron, the effect of gamma rays should be considered. In the case of tritium generated from a material with a low atomic number, it is considered that handling care should be taken due to its long half-life.

  • This study aims to evaluate the radiation dose received by workers within the auxiliary building of the Saeul Units 1 and 2 during a severe accident. To achieve this, representative accident scenarios were selected, and operator actions required by the severe accident management guidelines were derived to present a methodology for dose assessment. The study utilized MAAP5.06 to analyze severe accidents and employed MAAP DOSE to evaluate worker radiation exposure. Among the three operator actions considered, the direct spray action on the reactor building outer wall-side penetration resulted in the highest estimated radiation dose. This is likely because the workers are deployed near the reactor building penetration, exposing them to higher radiation levels. Future plans include the optimization of dose performance by comparing these findings with evaluations conducted using MCNP, and the development of a data-driven ALARA decision support system for predicting and diagnosing radiation exposure on nuclear sites to ensure worker safety during severe accidents.

  • Mitigation of fast neutron irradiation damage on reactor vessel and improvement of mechanical integrity are desired for the successful plant life-time extension. In this study, the performance of metallic hydride for this application is reviewed and compared. First, selected prospective metallic hydrides are evaluated by MCNP code and put into the attenuation test using Cf-252 neutron source. Since for the reactor application high moderation and reflection with no absorption are favored, Z factor is introduced for the evaluation. According to the Z value estimation $ZrD_2$ and $TiD_2$ are turned out to be the most favorable fast neutron shielding materials. More thorough evaluation by computer simulation and experimentally, will be followed.

  • In this paper, we calculate the light photons collection efficiency of large-volume plastic scintillation detector mainly used for radiation portal monitor (RPM). A Monte Carlo light photon transport code, DETECT2000, were used to quantitatively evaluate light collection efficiency of plastic scintillation detector. DETECT2000 calculated the placement of light collection efficiency based on the energy spectrum. We calculated the light collection efficiency relative to the position of the energy spectrum that proportional to the placement of the source. The $850{\times}285{\times}65mm^3$ size of polyvinyl toluene (PVT) scintillator was used for measurements. Through DETECT2000 simulation, the light collection efficiency of $5{\times}5$ arrays were calculated and verification was performed by comparing with experimentally measured. And then, the corrected MCNP simulation by applying the light collection efficiency in $21{\times}13$ arrays was compared and analyzed. Comparing the Monte Carlo simulation with measured results, it shows an average difference of 10.1% in $5{\times}5$ arrays. Particularly, about twice of the difference was found in the edge of first column, which coupled with PMT. In whole $5{\times}5$ array, the overall ratio was the same except for the first column. And then comparing the energy spectra of the $21{\times}13$ array with and without the light collection efficiency, it shows a difference of 6.69% in Compton edge area. The DETECT2000 based light collection efficiency simulation showed well agreement with the point source experiment. And comparing with measured energy spectra, we could compare the differences according to whether or not the light collection efficiency was applied. As a results, it is possible to increase the accuracy and reliability of Monte Carlo simulation results by pre-calculating the light collection efficiency according to the PVT geometry by using the DETECT2000.

  • Background: Radiation dose rates in PRIDE facility is evaluated quantitatively for assessing radiation safety of workers because of large amounts of depleted uranium being handled in PRIDE facility. Even if direct radiation from depleted uranium is very low and will not expose a worker to significant amounts of external radiation. Materials and Methods: ORIGEN-ARP code was used for calculating the neutron and gamma source term being generated from depleted uranium (DU), and the MCNP5 code was used for calculating the neutron and gamma fluxes and dose rates. Results and Discussion: The neutron and gamma fluxes and dose rates due to DU on spherical surface of 30 cm radius were calculated with the variation of DU mass and density. In this calculation, an imaginary case in which DU density is zero was added to check the self-shielding effect of DU. In this case, the DU sphere was modeled as a point. In case of DU mixed with molten salt of 50-250 g, the neutron and gamma fluxes were calculated respectively. It was found that the molten salt contents in DU had little effect on the neutron and the gamma fluxes. The neutron and the gamma fluxes, under the respective conditions of 1 and 5 kg mass of DU, and 5 and $19.1g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$ density of DU, were calculated with the molten salt (LiCl+KCl) of 50 g fixed, and compared with the source term. As the results, similar tendency was found in neutron and gamma fluxes with the variation of DU mass and density when compared with source spectra, except their magnitudes. Conclusion: In the case of the DU mass over 5 kg, the dose rate was shown to be higher than the environmental dose rate. From these results, it is concluded that if a worker would do an experiment with DU having over 5 kg of mass, the worker should be careful in order not to be exposed to the radiation.

  • This work presents the synthesis and preparation of a new glass system described by the equation of (70-x) B2O3-5TeO2 -20SrCO3-5ZnO -xBi2O3, x = 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 mol. %, using the melt quenching technique at a melting temperature of 1100 ℃. The photon-shielding characteristics mainly the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of the prepared glass samples were evaluated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation N-particle transport code (MCNP-5) at gamma-ray energy extended from 59 keV to 1408 keV emitted by the radioisotopes Am-241, Ba-133, Cs-137, Co-60, Na-22, and Eu-152. Furthermore, we observed that the Bi2O3 content of the glasses had a significantly stronger impact on the LAC at 59 and 356 keV. The study of the lead equivalent thickness shows that the performance of fabricated glass sample with 15 mol.% of Bi2O3 is four times less than the performance of pure lead at low gamma photon energy while it is enhanced and became two times lower the perforce of pure lead at high energy. Therefore, the fabricated glasses special sample with 15 mol.% of Bi2O3 has good shielding properties in low, intermediate, and high energy intervals.

  • In order to perform dry interim storage and transportation of the spent-fuel assemblies of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, dual-purpose casks can be utilized. The effectiveness of different neutron-shield materials for the dual-purpose cask was analyzed through a set of calculations carried out using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code. The dose rate for the dual-purpose cask utilizing the recently developed materials of $epoxy/clay/B_4C$ and $epoxy/clay/B_4C/carbon$ fiber was less than the allowable radiation level of 2 mSv/h at any point and 0.1 mSv/h at 2 m from the external surface of the cask. By utilization of $epoxy/clay/B_4C$ instead of an ethylene glycol/water mixture, the dose rates on the side surface of the cask due to neutron sources and consequent secondary gamma rays will be reduced by 17.5% and 10%, respectively. The overall dose rate in this case will be reduced by 11%.
