  • The structures and energies for the intramolecular rearrangement in $d^8-MCl(PH_3)_2$(HC≡CPh), M=Rh and Ir, complexes were studied by ab initio method at the Hartree-Fock and MP2 levels of theory. Three transition states in two pathways were optimized and characterized by frequency calculations. The activation energies for the process of π-type complex 1 to hydrido-alkynyl 2 have been computed to be relatively low 6.97 and 21.33 kcal/mol at MP2 level for Rh and Ir metals, respectively. However, the activation energies for a 1,2-hydrogen shift via t.s.3 have been computed to be high 50.83 and 60.05 kcal/mol for Rh and Ir metals.

  • We measured the concentrations of natural radionuclides (uranium and radon) and major elements in groundwater collected from forty wells located in Wonju area to investigate the hydrochemistry and the occurrence of these radionuclides. The range of electrical conductivity (EC) value in the study area was 73~400 μS/cm. In addition to the increase of EC value, the content of cations and anions also tends to increase. Uranium concentrations ranged from 0.06~50.5 ㎍/L (median value, 1.55 ㎍/L) and radon concentrations ranged from 67~8,410 pCi/L (median value, 1,915 pCi/L). Uranium concentrations in 3 well, 7.5% of the samples, exceeded 30 ㎍/L, the maximum contaminant level (MCL) proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), based on the chemical toxicity of uranium. Radon concentrations in 9 wells, 22.5% of the samples, and 1 well, 2.2% of the samples, exceeded 4,000 pCi/L (AMCL of the US EPA) and 8,100 pCi/L (Finland's guideline level), respectively. Concentrations of uranium and radon related to geology of the study area showd the highest values in groundwater of the biotite granite area. Uranium and radon contents in the groundwater are comparatively low compared to those in other countries with similar geological settings. It is likely that the measured value was lower than the actual content due to the inflow of shallow groundwater by the lack of casing and grouting.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the main effects and pleiotropic effects of two comparable isogenic lines for culm and spike length in hulled barley and observed various agronomic characteristics, yield and yield components under the conditions of heavy fertilizer application and high planting densities. Three isogenic lines, culm, spike and culm and spike, were planted and to obtain basic data for improving high-yielding and quality of hulled barley at Experiment Farm, Dankook Univ., Cheonan city in 1985. Differences of culm length between two comparable isogenic lines, short culmed line (SCL) and medium culmed line (MCL), in isogenic lines for culm length showed highly significant differences. And differences of spike length between two comparable isogenic lines, short spike line (SSL) and medium spike line (MSL), in isogenic lines for spike length showed highly significant differences. Differences of culm and spike length between two comparable isogenic lines, short culmed and spike line (SCSSL) and medium culmed and spike line (MCMSL), short culmed and spike line (SCSSL) and long culmed and spike line (LCLSL), in isogenic lines for culm and spike length showed highly significant differences. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of culm length in isogenic lines for culm length were heading days, the 1st and 2nd internode length, No. of grains per spike, No. of spikes/m$^2$, and one litre weight. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of spike length in isogenic lines for spike length were No. of spike nodes, heading days, maturity days, thousand grain weight and one litre weight. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of culm and spike length in isogenic lines for culm and spike length were No. of spike nodes, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th internode length, thousand grain weight and grain yield. Grain yield of SCL, MSL, MCMSL and SCSSL was more than grain yield of MCL, SSL, SCSSL and LCLSL, respectively. Maturity days of SCL, MSL, SCSSL and LSLSL were faster than maturity days of MCL, SSL, MCMSL and SCSSL, respectively.

  • Monomeric rhodium and iridium diimine complexes $Cp^*M(HNRNH)(Cp^*$ = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl : (M=lr; R=o-$C_6H_4 (1a), 4,5-(CH_3)_2-C_6H_2-1,2 (1b), 4,5-(Cl)_2-C_6H_2-1,2$ (1c), NCC=CCN-1,2 (1d): M=Rh; R=NCC=CCN-1,2 (1e)) have been synthesized from $[CP^*MCl_2]_2$ and 2 equiv. of diamine in the presence of $NEt_3$. The Crystal structure of 1a was determined by X-ray diffraction method : 1a was crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group $P2_{1/c}$, with lattice constants a=9.543 (1) ${\AA}$, b=16.286 (1) ${\AA}$, c=10.068 (1) ${\AA}$ and ${\beta}$=99.25 (1), with Z= 4. Least-squares refinement of the structure led to R factor of 0.049. The coordination sphere of rhodium and iridium can be described as a 2-legged piano-stool. All complexes are highly colored. Electrochemical studies show that 1d and 1e display quasi-reversible reduction and 1a-1c display irreversible reductions, suggesting that the acceptor orbital might be localized on the diimine ring.

  • The oligo(methylsilene) (1) was treated with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalysts and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, W) catalysts, producing the modified, cross-linked polymers. The average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yields of modified polymers increase as the catalyst goes down from Ti to Hf and similarly as the catalyst goes down from Cr to W. An interrelationship between average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yield is found within the respective group of catalysts, but is not observed as the catalyst goes down from Ti to W. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weights and similar percent ceramic residue yields as compared to the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts. The catalytic activities of group 4 metallocene combinations appear to be higher -100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls.

  • Monomeric rhodium and iridium-diaryltetrazene complexes $Cp^*$M(RNN=NNR)($Cp^*$=1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclope ntadienyl; M=Rh, Ir; R=Ph, 4-tolyl) have been synthesized from [$Cp^*MCl_2]_2$(M=Rh, Ir) and 2 equiv. of $[Li(THF)_x]_2(RN_4$R) in benzene. We have determined the crystal structure of (${\eta}^5$-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)diphenyltetrazene iridium by using graphite-monochromated Mo-$K_a$ radiation. The compound was crystallized in the monoclinic space group $P2_{1/c}$ with a=13.781(3), b=9.035(l), c=17.699(3) ${\AA}$, and ${\beta}=111.93(l)^{\circ}$. An X-ray crystal structure of complex 1 showed a short N(2)-N(3) distance ($1.265 {\AA}$) consistent with the valence tautomer A with Ir(III) rather than Ir(I). All complexes are highly colored and decompose on irradiation at 254 nm. Electrochemical studies show that complex 1 displays a quasi-reversible reduction.

  • Pinelliae rhizoma (Pr, 半夏) is a traditional medicine used in the treatment of incipient stroke. We investigated the effects of Pr on gene expression in a hypoxic model using cultured rat cortical cells. Pr (2.5 $\mu$g/ml) was added to the culture medium on DIV 12. A hypoxic shock (2% 0$_2$/5% CO$_2$, 37$^{\circ}$C, 3 hr) was given two days later (on DIV 14), and total mRNAs were isolated at 24 hr post-shock from both Pr-treated samples and untreated control cultures. Microarray using TwinChip $^{TM}$ Rat-5K (Digital Genomics, Seoul) indicated that Pr upregulated genes for cell growth and differentiation (tubb5, tgfa, ptpn11, n-ras, pdgfa) and antiapoptosis (mcl-1), while downregulating the apoptosis-induced gene (tieg). Therefore, it is interpreted that Pr protects neurons from hypxoic shock by maintaining cell growth and differentiation and by preventing apoptosis.

  • Neutrophils play an important role in the human immune system for protection against such microorganisms as a protozoan parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis; however, the precise role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of trichomoniasis is still unknown. Moreover, it is thought that trichomonal lysates and excretory-secretory products (ESP), as well as live T. vaginalis, could possibly interact with neutrophils in local tissues, including areas of inflammation induced by T. vaginalis in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of T. vaginalis lysate on the fate of neutrophils. We found that T. vaginalis lysate inhibits apoptosis of human neutrophils as revealed by Giemsa stain. Less altered mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and surface CD16 receptor expression also supported the idea that neutrophil apoptosis is delayed after T. vaginalis lysate stimulation. In contrast, ESP stimulated-neutrophils were similar in apoptotic features of untreated neutrophils. Maintained caspase-3 and myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) in neutrophils co-cultured with trichomonad lysate suggest that an intrinsic mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis was involved in T. vaginalis lysate-induced delayed neutrophil apoptosis; this phenomenon may contribute to local inflammation in trichomoniasis.

  • In an environment where all nodes move, the sensor node receives anchor node's position information within communication radius and modifies the received anchor node's position information by one's traveled distance and direction in saving in one's memory, where if there at least 3, one's position is determined by performing localization through trilateration. The proposed localization mechanisms have been simulated in the Matlab. In an environment where certain distance is maintained and nodes move towards the same direction, the probability for the sensor node to meet at least 3 anchor nodes with absolute coordinates within 1 hub range is remote. Even if the sensor node has estimated its position with at least 3 beacon information, the angle ${\theta}$ error of accelerator and digital compass will continuously apply by the passage of time in enlarging the error tolerance and its estimated position not being relied. Dead reckoning technology is used as a supplementary position tracking navigation technology in places where GPS doesn't operate, where one's position can be estimated by knowing the distance and direction the node has traveled with acceleration sensor and digital compass. The localization algorithm to be explained is a localization technique that uses Dead reckoning where all nodes are loaded with omnidirectional antenna, and assumes that one's traveling distance and direction can be known with accelerator and digital compass. The simulation results show that our scheme performed better than other mechanisms (e.g. MCL, DV-distance).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the method of dynamic sonographic measurements in the evaluation of the MCL injury of the knee joint while applying valgus and varus stress. Materials and Methods: Seven cases of MCL injury from January to April of 2008 was used for the study. For the evaluation of the medial instability, sonography was used immediately after injury, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after conservative treatment with limited motion brace. The length between the foot of the medial femoral epicondyle and the most proximal point of the tibial cortex was measured in 30 degrees flexion with valgus and varus stress of the knee joint. Results: The foot of the medial epicondyle and the starting point of the proximal tibial cortex underneath the round portion of the articular cartilage were always able to be seen on ultrasonography, even in varus and valgus stress with gravity in 30 degrees flexion of the knee joint. The results of measurements were always constant. Conclusion: Sonography can be used in evaluation of medial instability under the dynamic valgus and varus stress of the knee joint without further injury.
