  • We present the Multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) technology for increasing the transmission reach of wireless speaker systems. The proposed scheme adopts the Reed-Solomon coding for preventing the random error perfectly and shows the SNR gain in low bit error rate (BER) especially. So, we can increase the maximum reach of MB-OFDM UWB technology since the receiver sensitivity is improved. The simulation environment includes most effects of realistic channel environments such as Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), CM1 channel model, Sampling frequency offset (SFO), Carrier frequency offset (CFO) to improve the simulation accuracy. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can give a maximum 2 dB SNR gain and increase the transmission reach up to 12.6m.

  • In this paper, the equalization for frequency slope of path loss in Multi-Band(MB) OFDM UWB is proposed. The path loss of a signal is proportionate to the square of the signal's frequency. So, the received signal amplitudes of OFDM subcarrier can be different up to 3dB when MB-OFDM occupies bandwidth over 1.5GHz. The differences of subcarrier-amplitudes make an effective of 0.3 bit reduction of soft decision bits of viterbi decoder, and when the effective of 0.3 bit reduction can cause 0.5dB SNR degradation. This paper proposes two modem architectures which compensate for the degraded subcarrier by multiplying the reciprocal of degraded values in analog or digital domain. It is shown that, for the proposed architecture applied to MB-OFDM UWB, the performance improvements up to 0.5dB can be obtained over the conventional uncompensated receiver architecture.

  • In this paper, we propose various types of AGC algorithms for implementing the OFDM communication systems. For the high-speed packet transmission, in this paper, we assume the OFDM system with relatively long and repeated preambles. We propose the maximum sample value counter for counting the number of maximum sample. In the maximum sample value counter, we use the buffer for the digital signal buffering. Finally, the counting value of the maximum sample value counter controls the gain control signal generator by using gain control table automatically.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve the performance of initial channel estimation (CE) for the multiband-OFDM (MB-OFDM) UWB. The performance of the initial CE can be generally improved as increasing the number of the used preamble symbols. The MB-OFDM specification presents two CE symbols per band in preamble format. The performance of CE estimation with two CE symbols may be satisfied in relatively high sensitivity -77.5 and -72.5 dBm for 200 Mbps and 480 Mbps data rate, respectively, but can not be enough in the degraded 55 Mbps and 110 Mbps sensitivities such as -83.5 and -80.5 dBm, respectively. A method proposed in this paper achieves the performance improvement by extending CE estimation region to packet synchronization (PS) symbols and frame synchronization (FS) symbols including two CE symbols. This can improve the CE performance in the degraded SNR and increase the link-margin by reducing the error rate in physical-layer header. The link-margin improvement obtained by the proposed CE preamble can induce the decrease of error-rate in physical-layer header and increase of communication throughput. Simulation results for the proposed initial method show that the performance is improved by about 0.7 dB at 10-4 bit-error-rate using '4' symbols than initial method using only two CE symbols.

  • This paper describes fast-hopping frequency synthesizers for multi-band OFDM(MB-OFDM) ultra-wide band(UWB) systems. Three different structures in generating 3 center frequencies(3432MHz, 3960MHz, 4488MHz) are designed and compared. The first structure generates 3 center frequencies using only one PLL operating at 4224MHz. The second uses three PLLs operating at corresponding center frequencies. The third employes two PLLs operating at 3960MHz and 528MHz. Simulation results using a 0.18um RF CMOS process parameters show that the third structure exhibit the best characteristics. The band switching time of the proposed synthesizer is less than 1.3ns and the spur is less than -36dBc. The synthesizer consumes 22mA from a 1.8V supply.

  • In this paper, we have propose a preamble structure and synchronization/channel estimation method for UWB-MIMO which has 960Mbps transmit rate. The proposed structure is a compatible preamble structure for synchronization/channel estimation used by MIMO in MB-OFDM(Multi-Band OFDM) systems that are one of the standard systems of MBOA. The system is compatible with MB-OFDM using the proposed preamble structure. In this paper, we argue the problem in receiver part used by MIMO technique. And we simulate the proposed preamble for using synchronization/channel estimation. The simulation result shows the same performance compared with single receiver antenna.

  • We propose a new frequency offset estimation technique for multiband orthogonal frequency modulation (MB-OFDM) based ultra wideband (UWB) systems. The proposed frequency offset estimation technique is related to the scheme of Schmidl for channel model 1 (4-1Om NLOS, rms. delay =14.3ns.) using more than two symbols and with alternate symbols. Variance of frequency offset estimate obtained from the proposed frequency offset estimation technique approaches very nearing to Cramer Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) in an AWGN channel. BER performance of the proposed technique is also presented.

  • This letter presents a power efficient 64-state Viterbi decoder (VD) employing a two-stage radix-4 add-compare-select architecture. A class of VD architectures is implemented, and their hardware complexity, maximum operating speed, and power consumption are compared. Implementation results show that the proposed VD architecture is suitable for multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, which can support the data rate of 480 Mbps even when implemented using 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology.
