  • The effects of heat-treatment on discharge characteristics of $TiFe_{1-x}Ni_x$ alloy were investigated. The content of Ni in alloy was varied from x = 0.1 to 0.6 by each 0.1 increment. Discharge capacity change of each alloy with C/D cycles was measured. With increasing Ni-content initial discharge capacity was increased. but at x = 0.6 it was deceased again. With increasing C/D cycles discharge capacity was rapidly decreased in the alloy of high Ni-content. In order to investigate the effects of heat-treatment on cycle life, $TiFe_{0.5}Ni_{0.5}$ alloy having maximum initial discharge capacity was heat-treated at various temperatures in the range of $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ and tested. The loss of initial discharge capacity was appeared at all temperatures. but cycle characteristics of the alloy was improved. The electrodes heat-treated for 1 hour in the range of $700{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ showed good recovery of discharge capacities through repeated cycles, and from SEM observation results these were considered as 1 hour in the range of $700{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ showed good recovery of discharge capacities through repeated cycles, and from SEM observation results these were considered asbeing due to increased electrode strength and small loss of porosity during heat-treatment. The electrode heat-treated for 1 hour at $900^{\circ}C$ showed poor discharge characteristics because of low porosity.

  • The geotextile have been used in filtration and drainage for over 30 years in many applications of civil and environmental projects. Geotextile tube is compound technology of filtration and drainage property of geotextile. Geotextile have been used for various types of containers, such as small hand-filled sandbags, 3-dimensional fabric forms for concrete paste, large soil and aggregate filled geotextile gabion, prefabricated hydraulically filled containers, and other innovative systems involving containment of soils using geotextile. They are hydraulically filled with dredged materials. It have been applied in coastal protection and scour protection, dewatering method of slurry, and isolation of contaminated material. Recently, geotextile tube technology is no longer alternative construction technique but suitable desired solution. This paper presents the behavior of geotextile tube composite structure by 2-D limit equilibrium and plane strain analysis. 2-D limit equilibrium analysis was performed to evaluate the stability of geotextile tube composite structure for the lateral load and also the plane strain analysis was conducted to determine the design and construction factors. Based on the results of this paper, the three types of geotextile tube composite structure is stable. And the optimum tensile strength of geotextile is 151kN/m and maximum pumping pressure is 22.7kN/m.

  • 'The facilities standards of water supply' issued by the Ministry of Environment in 2004 indicates that expansion joints cannot be used in welding water supply steel pipes. However, their reason is not clear and it is difficult to confirm the stability of the steel pipe for a water supply pipeline. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not an expansion joint is necessary to improve the stability of water supply in steel pipe through a displacement analysis of the pipework. The test results are as follows. Firstly, it was found that expansion and contraction of the water supply steel pipe (D 2,400 mm) occur repeatedly in 4 cycles per year, and the maximum expansion and contraction amount of the pipe is 13.03 mm in 1.24 km pipelines. Secondly, the thermal stress caused by expansion and contraction of the steel pipe is $13.7{\sim}36.1kgf/cm^2$ according to the burial depth (0~4 m). The main comparison factors to determine the stability of the steel pipe (STWW 400) were the allowable tensile strength and the fatigue limit, which were computed to be $4,100kgf/cm^2$ and $1,840kgf/cm^2$, respectively. Finally, the thermal stress of the steel pipe is very small compared to the allowable tensile stress and fatigue stress. Therefore, thermal stress does not affect the stability of the steel pipe, although the expansion and contraction of the steel pipe occurs by temperature changes. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that expansion joints are not required in water supply steel pipelines.

  • In this paper, poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) was modified using electron beam irradiation and its property was investigated. PDMS sheets prepared using a conventional thermal curing method were irradiated by electron beams at absorbed doses between 20 and 200 kGy and their properties were characterized using swelling degree and contact angle measurements, universal testing machine (UTM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and X -ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The results of the swelling degree measurements, UTM, and TGA revealed that the swelling degree of the irradiated PDMS sheets was reduced down to 24% in comparison to the control sheet, and their compression strength and thermal decomposition temperature increased up to maximum 2.5 MFa and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively, due to the increase in crosslinking density by irradiation. In addition, on the basis of the results of contact angle measurements and XPS, the wettability of the PDMS sheets was enhanced up to 24% owing to the generation of hydrophilic functional groups on the PDMS surface by oxidation during electron beam irradiation.

  • Stone board for the rock bed was needed to reduce weight using thin thickness and reinforced materials. In this work, stone/wood board for rock bed was studied. Stone and wood were attached to reduce total weight of stone for rock bed. For reinforcing wood heat treatment method was used to change surface and mechanical properties. Mechanical strength of heat treated wood increased more than neat condition. The optimum heat treatment condition was set on $100^{\circ}C$ under tensile, flexural loads whereas surface energy was also obtained by contact angle measurement. Optimum adhesive condition was to get the maximum adhesion between stone and wood. Lap shear test was performed for stone/wood board with different adhesives such as amine type epoxy, polyurethane, chloro-rubber and vinyl chloride acetate type. Fracture surface of lap shear test was shown at wood fracture part on stone using amine type epoxy adhesive. It was found that for high adhesion between stone and wood the optimum adhesive was epoxy type for the rock bed.

  • Effect of Mo interlayer on the relaxation of residual stress in AlN/Cu pint bonded by active-metal brazing method was investigated. The stress analyses by finite-element-method, the measurement of pint strength and the observation of fracture surface were carried out and their results were compared with each other. From the results of stress analysis it is confirmed that a Mo interlayer led to a shift of maximum stress concentration site from AlN/insert-metal interface$\rightarro$ insert-metal/Mo$\rightarro$Mo interlayer. Additionally, with increase of the Mo interlayer thickness the stress concentration with tensile component was separately built both at the interface of Cu/Mo and AlN/Mo. whereby the residual stress in the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface was drastically reduced. The AlN/Mo/Cu pints with Mo interlayer thickness of above 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ showed the strengths higher than 200 MPa. upto max. 275 MPa, while the AlN/Cu pint only max. 52 MPa.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the compensatory mechanism in vivo and develop the treatment guide by performing the comprehensive functional tests of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) deficient subjects. Material and Methods: 10 PCL deficient subjects and 10 healthy control group were evaluated. Performed functional tests were range of motion, posterior drawer test, Telos, 30$^{\circ}$ flexion wt-bearing view, KT-1000 arthrometer, gait analysis, EMG test and isokinetic tests. Results: Physical, KT-1000, Telos posterior tests showed significant differences, but 300 full weight bearing lateral view, muscle strength test revealed no difference between two groups. Less knee flexion at initial contact and reduced maximum valgus moment were observed in PCL deficient group. In vertical drop landing, PCL group had increased plantar flexion angle at initial contact. Conclusion: Compensatory mechanisms such as reduced unstable components and absorbing the maximal load of the joint were occurred after PCL insufficiency, which result in good clinical and functional outcomes. Further investigations would be needed to understand the functional adaptations of PCL deficient subjects.

  • A diesel-degrading bacterium, Gordonia sp. SD8, was isolated from soil contaminated with petroleum, and its diesel degradation was characterized in a soil as well as a liquid culture system. SD8 could grow in the mineral salt medium supplemented with diesel as a sole carbon and energy source. The maximum specific growth rate ($0.67{\pm}0.05\;d^{-1}$) and diesel degradation rate ($1,727{\pm}145$ mg-TPH $L^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) of SD8 showed at 20,000 mg-TPH $L^{-1}$ and $30^{\circ}C$, and then this bacterium could degrade high strength of diesel of 40,000 mg-TPH $L^{-1}$. The residual diesel concentration in the inoculated soil with SD8 was 3,724 mg-TPH kg-dry $soil^{-1}$ after 17 days, whereas the diesel concentration in the non-inoculated soil was $8,150{\pm}755$ mg-TPH kg-dry $soil^{-1}$. These results indicate that Gordonia sp. SD8 can serve as a promising microbial resource for the bioremediaion of contaminated soil with petroleum hydrocarbons including diesel.

  • To improve the vulnerable point and the mechanical property of the existing lightweight foamed concrete, this study was intend to manufacture the lightweight foamed concrete with wasted expanded poly-styrene, examinate and analyze the mechanical property of its. The experiment was being processed with mixing the wasted expanded poly-styrene maximum 40 % by stages and which was mainly basis on the practical mixture. The results of the experiment are following. The flow value is most affected by the mixtured rate of the wasted expanded poly-styrene. The more the mixtured ratio, the less the flow value and the more the more the unit quantity of cement and the W/C, the more the flow value. The apparent specific gravity indicated 0.31∼0.54 and which is seemed to be mainly included in the 0.4 degree and 0.5 degree that are regulated in the KS F 4039. The more the mixtured wasted poly-styrene ratio, the less the apparent specific gravity. The absorbing ratio which was depend on the mixture condition indicated 11 ∼46% and the more the mixtured ratio of the wasted expanded poly-styrene, the less the absorbing ratio remarkably. The compressive strength of the lightweight foamed concrete had a tendency to increase as the mixtured ratio of the wasted poly-styrene, the ratio quantity of cement and the apparent specific gravity increasing but as the ratio of bubble decreasing. The W/C affected little.

  • In a previous research performed by the authors, the allowable compressive stress coefficient (K) in pretensioned members with rectangular section at transfer was proposed based on strength design theory. In this study, a subsequent research of an enormous analysis was performed to determine the K factor for Tee and inverted Tee section members, considering the effect of section height (h), section type, amount of tendons ($A_{ps}$), and eccentricity ratio (e/h). Based on the analysis results, the allowable compressive stress coefficients (K) for Tee and inverted Tee section members at transfer were derived, which limit the maximum allowable stresses as 80% and 70% of the compressive strengths at the time of release for Tee section and inverted Tee section, respectively. And these were larger than the allowable stresses specified in domestic and other international codes. In order to verify the proposed equations, they were compared to the test results available in literature and other codes, which showed that the allowable stresses in domestic and international codes are unconservative for the cases with low eccentricity ratios while conservative for those with high eccentricity ratios. The proposed equations, however, estimate the allowable stresses of the Tee and inverted Tee section members reasonably close to test results.
