Carbonylation of Benzyl Alcohols and Benzyl Bromide to Phenylacetic Acids with Rhodium(Ⅰ) and Iridium(Ⅰ) Complexes

  • Rhodium(I) and iridium(II) complexes, M(Cl$O_4$)(CO)$(PPh_3)_2$ and [M(CO)$(PPh_3)_3$]Cl$O_4$ (M = Rh, Ir), and RhX(CO)$(PPh_3)_2$ (X = Cl, Br, OH) catalyze the carbonylation of benzyl alcohols to produce phenylacetic acids under 6 atm of CO at $110^{\circ}C$ in deuterated chloroform. Benzyl alcohols initially undergo dehydration to give dibenzyl ethers which are then carbonylated to benzyl phenylacetates, and the hydrolysis of benzyl phenylacetate produces phenylacetic acids and benzyl alcohols. The carbonylation is accompanied with dehydrogenation followed by hydrogenolysis of benzyl alcohols giving benzaldehydes and methylbenzenes which are also produced by CO2 elimination of phenylacetic acids. Phenylacetic acid is also produced in the reactions of benzyl bromide with CO catalytically in the presence of Rh(Cl$O_4$)(CO)$(PPh_3)_2$ and $H_2O$, and stoichiometrically with Rh(OH)(CO)$(PPh_3)_2$ in the absence of $H_2O$.

A Study on Mine Ventilation Network (광산 통기 네트워크 연구)

  • This study focuses on the improvement of the working environment in domestic collieries where temperature is increasing due to heat of the earth that is caused by the long-term mining. In order to improve the working environment of the mine, a ventilation evaluation was carried out for Hwasoon Mining Industry. In order to increase the ventilation efficiency of the mine, numerical analysis of the effect on temperature was carried out by using climsim, a temperature prediction program. The analysis shows that A coal mine needs $6,152m^3/min$ for in-flow ventilation rate but the total input air flowrate is $4,710m^3/min$, $1,442m^3/min$ of in-flow ventilation rate shortage. The 93 m hypothetical ventilation shaft from -395 ML to -488 ML could result about $3^{\circ}C$ temperature drop in the coal mine of -488 ML far. As a result of predicting the $CO_2$ concentration at -523 ML development using artificial neural network, the emission of $CO_2$ increased as the amount of coal and coal bed thickness increased. The factors that have the greatest effect on the amount of $CO_2$ emissions were coal layer thickness and coal mining. And, as the air quantity increases, it has a great effect on the decrease of carbon dioxide concentration.

An effect of load on surface roughness in surface rolling (표면 로울링시 가압력이 표면 조도에 미치는 영향)

  • The surface rolling, one of the plastic working processes, provides good surface roughness with the reduction of diameter and the increase of surface hardness. In this study three Nachi 6000ZZ bearing were used for surface rolling on ductile cast iron. The results obtained are as follows; (1) The good surface roughness can be obtained with roller surface radius of curvature of 24mm after the 2nd rolling. (2) The surface roughness of ductile cast iron was 0.48.mu.mRmax by the contact pressure of 140kgf/mm$^{2}$ and surface hardness was Hv 395 with roller surface radius of curvature of 24mm after the 2nd rolling. (3) The reduction of specimen diameter of ductile cast iron were -12.8.mu.m due to rolling. (4) Within the diameter variation of -11.mu.m, surface roughness and surface hardness were increased, but at the range of exceeding -14.mu.m of the diameter variation the surface roughness became worse and the surface roughness became worse and the surface hardness was increased. (5) Dynamic contact area was about 25% to 30% of static contact area. The calculated contact pressure showed a good agreement with the experimental contact pressure.

Thermal Stability, Mechanical Properties and Magnetic Properties of Fe-based Amorphous Ribbons with the Addition of Mo and Nb

  • The metallic glass ribbons of $[(Fe_xCo_{1-x})_{0.75}B_{0.2}Si_{0.05}]_{96}Mo_4$ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 at.%) and $[(Fe_xCo_{1-x})_{0.75}B_{0.2}Si_{0.05}]_{96}Nb_4$ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 at.%) were obtained by melt spinning with 25-30 ${\mu}m$ thickness. The thermal stability, mechanical properties and magnetic properties of Fe-Co-B-Si based systems were investigated. The values of thermal stability were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), including glass transition temperature ($T_g$), crystallization temperature ($T_x$) and supercooled liquid region (${\Delta}T_x=T_x-T_g$). These amorphous ribbons were identified as fully amorphous, using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanical properties of Febased samples were measured by nano-indentation. Magnetic properties of the amorphous ribbons were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The amorphous ribbons of $[(Fe_xCo_{1-x})_{0.75}B_{0.2}Si_{0.05}]_{96}Mo_4$ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 at.%) and $[(Fe_xCo_{1-x})_{0.75}B_{0.2}Si_{0.05}]_{96}Nb_4$ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 at.%) exhibited soft magnetic properties with low coercive force ($H_c$) and high saturation magnetization (Ms).

Development and experimental verification of vortex typed nonfilter nonpoint source pollution reduction device (와류형 미필터 비점오염저감장치의 개발과 실험적 검증)

  • The objective of this study was to develop and verify an effective vortex typed nonfilter nonpoint source pollution reduction device. To verify this pollution reduction device, a total of twelves scenarios (three rainfall intensities${\times}$two states${\times}$two steps) of experiments were conducted using pollutants. First, simulated inflow (rainfall intensity 2.5 mm/hr: $0.00152m^3/s$, rainfall intensity 3.395 mm/hr: $0.00206m^3/s$, rainfall intensity 6.870 mm/hr: $0.00326m^3/s$) was calculated. Second, pollutants (mixture of 25% of four particle sizes) were selected and injected. Third, pollutant removal efficiencies of this device at its initial state and operating states were measured. As a result of analysis based on rainfall intensity, the concentration of pollutants was decreased by the device at initial and operating states at all rainfall intensities. Its pollutant removal efficiency was more than 80%, the standard set by the Ministry of Environment. Its pollutant removal efficiency was gradually increased over time, reaching approximately 90%. Its pollutant removal efficiency was higher in its operating state than that in its initial state. Therefore, nonpoint source pollutants can be effectively removed by this vortex typed nonpoint source pollution reduction device developed in this study.

Battery Electrode Characteristics of Si-based Composite by Mechanical Alloying Method (기계적 합금화법에 의한 실리콘계 복합물질의 전지전극특성)

  • A Si-CuO-graphite composite was prepared by a mechanical alloying (MA) method. The Si-CuO composite has a mixture structure, where CuO is homogeneously dispersed in Si. Also, $Cu_2O$ and $Cu_3Si$ phases were formed during MA and heat treatment. Graphite with the Si-CuO composite was mixed in the same mill for 30 minutes with weight ratio of Si-CuO composite and graphite as 1:1. The Si-CuO composite was homogeneously covered with graphite. SiC phase was not formed. Electrochemical tests of the composite have been investigated, and the first charge and discharge capacities of the material were about 870mAh/g and 660mAh/g, respectively. Those values are about 76% of the first cycle efficiency. The cycle life of the composite showed that the initial discharge capacity of 660 mAh/g could be maintained up to 92% after 20 cycles.

Disturbance regime and tree regeneration in kwangnung natural forest (광릉 자연림에서의 교란체제와 수목의 재생)

  • Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.

Anti-obesity Effect of the Flavonoid Rich Fraction from Mulberry Leaf Extract (뽕잎 추출물 기원 Flavonoid Rich Fraction의 항비만효과)

  • Background: This study investigated the anti-obesity effect of the flavonoid rich fraction (FRF) and its constituent, rutin obtained from the leaf of Morus alba L., on the lipid accumulation mechanism in 3T3-L1 adipocyte and C57BL/6 mouse models. Methods and Results: In Oil Red O staining, FRF (1,000 ㎍/㎖) treatments showed inhibition rate of 35.39% in lipid accumulation compared to that in the control. AdipoRedTM assay indicated that the triglyceride content in 3T3-L1 adipocytes treated with FRF (1,000 ㎍/㎖) was reduced to 23.22%, and free glycerol content was increased to 106.04% that of the control. FRF and its major constituent, rutin affected mRNA gene expression. Rutin contributed to the inhibition of Sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) gene expression, and inhibited the transcription factors SREBP-1c, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α (C/EBPα), fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). In addition, the effect of FRF administration on obesity development in C57BL/6 mice fed high-fat diet (HFD) was investigated. FRF suppressed weight gain, and reduced liver triglyceride and leptin secretion. FRF exerted potential anti-inflammatory effects by improving insulin resistance and adiponectin levels, and could thus be used to help counteract obesity. The mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ, FAS, ACC, and CPT-1 were determined in liver tissue. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis was also performed to evaluate the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in epididymal adipose tissue. Compared to the control group, mice fed the HFD showed the up-regulation in PPAR-γ, FAS, IL-6, and TNF-α genes, and down-regulation in CPT1 gene expression. FRF treatement markedly reduced the expression of PPAR-γ, FAS, IL-6, and TNF-α compared to those in HFD control, whereas increased the expression level of CPT1. Conclusions: These results suggest that the FRF and its major active constituent, rutin, can be used as effective anti-obesity agents.

Changes in the Growth and Quality of Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds. 'Penn A1') Following Gibberelinic Acid (GA3) Treatment (지베렐린산(GA3) 처리에 따른 크리핑 벤트그래스 (Agrostis palustris Huds. 'Penn A1')의 생장 및 품질 변화)

  • This study evaluated the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). Experimental treatments included a No application of fertilizer and GA3 (NFG) Control [3 N active ingredient (a.i.) g/m2], 0.3GA3 (GA3 0.3 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL), 0.6GA3 (GA3 0.6 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL), 1.2GA3 (GA3 1.2 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL), and 2.4GA3 (GA3 2.4 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL). Additionally, the study included a 1.5N+GA3 experiment with similar GA3 treatments combined with 1.5N a.i. g/m2 : NFG, Control (3N a.i. g/m2), 1.5N+ 0.3GA3 (1.5N a.i. g/m2+GA3 0.3 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL), 1.5N+0.6GA3 (1.5N a.i. g/m2+GA3 0.6 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL), 1.5N+1.2GA3 (1.5N a.i. g/m2+GA3 1.2 a.i. mg/m2/ 200 mL), and 1.5N+2.4GA3 (1.5N a.i. g/m2+GA3 2.4 a.i. mg/m2/200 mL). Compared to the NFG, turf color index chlorophyll content was not significantly different (p< 0.05). However, shoot length in 1.2GA3, 2.4GA3, 1.5N+0.3GA3, 1.5N+0.6GA3, 1.5N+1.2GA3, and 1.5N+2.4GA3 treatments increased by 0.8%, 10.6%, 5.15%, 8.3%, 13.5 %, and 21.6%, respectively, compared to the control. As compared to the control, clipping yield in 1.5N+1.2GA3 and 1.5N+2.4GA3 treatments increased by 7.1% and 14.3 %, respectively. These results indicated that GA3 application increased shoot length, with the 1.2GA3 treatment showing shoot length similar to the control (3N a.i. g /m2 ).

The Effect of Ca Addition on the Grain Refinement and Mechanical Properties in Mg-Zn Alloy (Mg-Zn 합금의 결정립미세화와 기계적 성질에 미치는 Ca 첨가의 영향)

  • The main interdendritic phase which was formed during early solidification of the ternary Mg-Zn-Ca alloys is the $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ phase. The microstructure of $Mg-6wt%Zn-0.1{\sim}0.3wt%Ca$ alloys consisted of MgZn precipitates and $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ phase formed around the grain boundaries. In the alloys with the highest level of Ca($Mg-6wt%Zn-0.5{\sim}0.7wt%aCa$ alloys), the microstructure revealed wholly $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ phase formed around the grain boundaries. The grain size of Mg-6wt%Zn-Ca alloys decreased significantly with increase in Ca content and, at 0.5wt% Ca or more, grain size becomes constant at about 60 ${\mu}m$. The tensile properties of the as-cast Mg-6wt%Zn-Ca magnesium alloys were improved due to grain refinement by addition of Ca.
