Bioactivity-guided fractionation led to the isolation of two new phenylpropanoids, 3-O-p-coumaroyl-1-(4-hydroxy- 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-propanone (1) and 3-O-p-coumaroyl-1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-O-$\beta$-gulcopyranosylpropanol (2), together with three known compounds, N-p-coumaroylserotonin (3), N-feruloylserotonin (4) and p-coumaric acid (5) from the leaves of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D-NMR. Compared to arbutin (I$C_{50}$ 0.048 mM) as a control, compounds 3 and 4 exhibited stronger tyrosinase inhibition activities with an I$C_{50}$ values of 0.027 mM and 0.026 mM, respectively. Compounds 1 (I$C_{50}$ 0.055 mM) and 2 (I$C_{50}$ 0.053 mM) also showed strong activities.
In order to investigate the fungicidal activities against various plant pathogenes, diminishing effect of plant transpiration, phytotoxicities, vapor effect and the rate of reduction by ultraviolet rays of phenylmercuric 8-oxyquinolinate(P.M.Q), this experiments were undertaken under various laboratory conditions. 1. Inhibitory activity on the spore germination of this chemical was shown less effective than that of P.M.A..(Table 2, Table 3, Table 4, Table 5 and Table 6) Also, P.M.Q. was resulted a somewhat higher inhibitory activity on the hyphae growth than P.M.A. (Table 7). 2. In the diminishing effect of plant transpiration, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate(oxine sulfate) was more strong inhibitory at first than P.M.Q., while, at last, P.M.Q. was more strong inhibitory in comparison with oxine sulfate(Table 8, Fig. 1 and Table 9). 3. P.M.Q. was shown less injury on the germination of rice plant seeds and the emergence of their roots than P.M. A.(Table 10). Injuries was not observed on the rice seedlings and soy-bean seedlings sprayed with 40 ppm of this chemical. 4. P.M.A. had more inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth of phytopathogenes than P.M.Q. on the vapor effect (Table 11, Fig. 2). 5. Biological activity and chemical decomposition rate of P.M.A. were greatly reduced by exposure of this compound to ultraviolet rays. But, P.M.Q. was only slightly affected by similar treatment(Table 12, Fig. 3, Table 13 and Fig. 4). From the above results, this chemical will be a promising fungicide adding fungitoxicities against various phytopatho genes, diminishing effect of plant transpiration and physico-stability.

Effect of molasses addition to complete calf starter (CCS) and the following pellet processing was evaluated with 12 Holstein-Friesian (HF) calves (7-14 d old with $42\;{\pm}\;5.5\;kg$ average BW), with 6 calves (replicate) per treatment. The CCS was formulated with 65% concentrate calf starter and 35% local corn fodder. On the CCS, molasses was added either 5% (M5) or 10% (M10), then the mixture was pelleted and fed to the calves for 7 weeks. Molasses addition, regardless of addition level, improved (p<0.05) both the durability and hardness of the pellet which contains 35% of high fibrous local corn fodder. Upon feeding to calves, the feed intake and daily gain were numerically higher with 5% molasses addition compared to 10% molasses addition. Blood VFA level was remarkably higher (p<0.01) in calves fed M10 than calves fed M5. There was no difference (p>0.05) in blood glucose level between M5 and M10. Length and number of papillae were not different (p>0.05) by the addition levels of molasses. However, there was one exception in number of papillae at caudo-dorsal sac which were higher (p<0.05) number in M5 than M10 calves. Considering the quality of CCS pellet, calf performance and rumen development, there was no additional benefit of 10% molasses addition compared to 5%. From the results of this study, 5% molasses addition could be recommended for local farmer when they utilize local corn fodder to make CCS for HF calves in Indonesia.

In the present study, we characterized the non-vascular smooth muscle relaxant effects of a novel benzoyran derivative ,SKP-450 (2-[2'(1',3'-dioxolone)-2-methyl-4- (2'-oxo-1'-pyrrolidinyl) -6-nitro-2H-1- benzopyran) and its metabolite, SKP-310, in comparison with levcromakalim (LCRK). In the rat stomach fundus, the spontaneous motility stimulated by $10^{-6.5}\;M$ bethanechol was completely eliminated not only by $10^{-7}\;M$ SKP-450 but also by $10^{-6}\;M$ LCRK, which were blocked by $10^{-6}\;M$ glibenclamide. The inhibitory effect of SKP-450 $pD_2,\;3.94{\pm}0.66)$ was much less than LCRK $(pD2,\;5.73{\pm}0.38,\;p<0.05)$. In the bethanechol $(10{-6.5 }\;M)-stimulated$ urinary bladder, the tonus was decreased in association with elimination of spontaneous motility by $10^{-7}\;M$ M SKP-450 and $10^{-6}\;M\;LCRK\;(pD2,\;6.77{\pm}0.06)\;(P<0.05)$, which were inhibitable by $10^{-6}\;M$ glibenclamide. The inhibitory effect of SKP-450 $(pD2,\;7.66{\pm}0.05)$ was significantly more potent than that of LCRK $(pD2,\;6.77{\pm}0.06,\;p<0.05)$. In the rat uterus stimulated by $PGF_{2\alpha}\;(10^{-7}\;M)$, both increased tonus and spontaneous motility were eliminated by $10^{-6}\;M$ LCRK with slight depression of the tonus, but not by SKP-450 $(10^{-5}\;M)$. The stimulated trachea of guinea-pig by $10^{-6.5}\;M$ bethanechol was moderately suppressed by SKP-450 $(10^{-6}{sim}10^{-5}\;M)$ but little by SKP-310. In association with the relaxant effects, SKP-450 $(10^{-6}\;M)$ and LCRK $(10^{-5}\;M)$ caused a significant stimulation of the $^{86}Rb$ efflux from rat urinary bladder and stomach fundus, which were antagonized by $10^{-5}\;M$ glibenclamide, whereas the $K^+$ channel openers could not exert a stimulation of the $^{86}Rb$ efflux from rat uterus. In conclusion, it is suggested that SKP-450 exerts potent relaxant effects on the urinary bladder detrusor muscle and duodenum, whereas it shows much less effect on stomach fundus and uterus as contrasted to LCRK.
A limnological survey was conducted in a reservoir, Lake Hoengsung located in Kangwondo, Korea, from July 2000 to September 2001 on the monthly basis. Phosphorus loading from the watershed was estimated by measuring total phosphorus concentration in the main tributary. Secchi disc transparency, epilimnetic (0-5 m) turbidity, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen(TN) and silica concentration were in the range of 0.9-3.5 m, 0.1-8.5 NTU, 0.3-32.4 mgChl $m^{-3}$, 5-46 mgP $m^{-3}$, 0.83-3.55 mgN $L^{-1}$ and 0.5-9.6 mgSi $L^{-1}$, respectively. Green algae and cyanobacteria dominated phytoplankton community in warm seasons, from July through October, 2000. In July a green alga (Scenedesmus sp.) was dominant with a maximum cell density of 10,480 cells mL. Cyanobacteria (Microcystics sp.) dominated in August and September with cell density of 3,492 and 295 cells mL ,respectively. Species diversity of phytoplankton was highest (2.22) in July. The trophic state of the reservoir can be classified as eutrophic on the basis of TP, Chl-a, and Secchi disc transparency. Because TP concentration was high in flood period, most of phosphorus loading was concentrated in rainy season. TP loading was calculated by multiplying TP and flow rate. The dam managing company measured inflow rate of the reservoir daily, while TP was measured by weekly surveys. TP of unmeasured days was estimated from the empirical relationship of TP and the flow rate of the main tributary; $TP=5.59Q^{0.45}\;(R^2=0.47)$. Annual TP loading was calculated to be 4.45 tP $yr^{-1}$, and the areal P loading was 0.77 gP $m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ which is similar to the critical P loading for eutrophication by Vollenweider's phosphorus model, 0.72 gP $m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$.

The water-soluble glucan produced by Lactococcus lactis 1370 affects the formation of dental plaque by Streptococcus mutans. In this study the factors affecting the formation of water-soluble glucan were assessed as the optical density of culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the spectrophotometer. 1. The optical density of culture supernatant was high when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 5% sucrose, while being low in culture supernatant of Streptococcus mutans. 2. The optical density of culture supernatant was higher when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 10% sucrose than when being cultured without sucrose (p<0.05), and was higher at pH 7 than pH 5 (p<0.05). 3. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest at $37^{\circ}C$ among $32^{\circ}C,\;37^{\circ}C\;and\;42^{\circ}C$, and was higher in the anaerobic incubator than in the aerobic incubator (p<0.05). 4. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest in the media containing 1.0mM $CaCl_2$ (p<0.05), 2.5mM KCl (p<0.05), and 1.6mM $MgCl_2$. 5. When Streptococcus mutans was cultured in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth, the mean weight of produced artificial plaque was 103.0mg on the wire, whereas being significantly reduced to 5.6mg in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth containing 5% sucrose (p<0.05). These results indicate that the water-soluble glucan is more formed by Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the media containing sucrose or under the adequate conditions for the growth of bacteria, and inhibits the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans.
Cytosine deaminase was partialy purified about 10 fold from the ceil-free extract of Aspergillus fumigatus. The partialy purified enzyme was relatively stable in a pH 5.5 to 8.0, but thermo-unstable. The enzyme activity was found in a pH optimum of 7.0 and temperature optimum of 30 to 35$^{\circ}C$. The activation energy calculated to be 13,240 cal/mol. The apparent Michaelis constants Km for cytosine was found to be 1.53 mM and the molecular weight was determined to be approximately 32,000. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by 0.1 mM of Hg$^^{2+}$, Pb$^{2+}$, Cd$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$, furthermore inhibited by 1mM of ATP, UTP, o-phenanthroline and p-chloromercuribenzoate.
Bacillus thuringiensis var. thuringiensis H1 (BTT) strain was cultured in the 4 different fermentation media and then measured their growths and the productions of endotoxin crystals from the culture media. Out of the 4 media, the productions of the endotoxin crystals and spores were maximal in the pH9-M-3 medium. The wet weight of BTT cells grown in the 150ml culture was approximately 3.218g and the number of the viable spores was $3.3{\times}10^{10}/ml$, and the ratio of the endotoxin weight over total cell weight was 20.05%. The generation time of the BTT bacteria in the M-1 was about 47.6 minutes in the M-2, 132.9 minutes in the M-3 and 110.2 minutes in the M-4. The proper pH for the production of the endotoxin by BTT appeared to be pH 6.5.
To reveal subsurface structures of the Ulsan fault, seismic data were recorded along a 750-m long line near Nongso-Eup in Ulsan. P and S waves were generated simultaneously by impacting a 5 kg sledgehammer on a tilted plate. The data were received by 16 10-Hz 3-component geophones at 3 m intervals. Refracted P waves were inverted using the tomography method. Dip moveout and migration were applied to reflection data processed following a general sequence. Four layers were identified based on P-wave velocities and P- and S-wave stacked image. From top to bottom, the P-wave velocity of each layer ranges in $300{\sim}1100\;m/s$, $1100{\sim}1700\;m/s$, $1700{\sim}2700\;m/s$, and greater than 2700 m/s. The corresponding thickness of the top three layers averages 3.9 m, 5.9 m, 4.4 m, respectively. The S-wave stack section is effective to define subsurface structures shallower than 10 m.
