  • Effects of rheological parameters, such as shear rate, temperature, concerntration, salts on the apparent viscosity of chitosan(deacetylation degree: $84\%$, Mw: 267,000) dissolved in acetate buffer(pH 4.5) were investigated. Rheologiral properties of chitosan solution from cuticle of red snow crab (Chinonecetes japonicus) are as follows. $0.5\%$ chitosan in 0.1M acetate buffer (pH 4.5) solution showed Bingham flow having hysteresis loop. It's flow equation was $\sigma=0.757+19.6_\gamma(r^2=0.99)$. The viscosity of chitosan solution is exponentially increased with its concentration, and showed Arrhenius dependence with respect to the temperature $(10^{\circ}C-40^{\circ}C).$ When various salts were added to chitosan solution, the viscosity decreased as the concentration of counterion increased. But the type ot counterions itself does not have any significant effects on the viscosity.

  • The dietary fiber was extracted from apple pomace with various concentrations of acidic, alkaline solvents and water in $24.4{\sim}29.3%$ yield. The extractions of water-soluble dietary fiber with acidic(6.85%) and alkaline solvent(6.55%) were more effective than the water extraction(6.0%). The higher extraction yield was obtained with increased concentration of acidic or alkaline solvents. The content of galacturonic acid was higher in the order, 0.01 M HCl(77.5%)>0.05 M HCl(76.8%)>$H_2O(76.1%)$>0.05 M NaOH(73.8%)> 0.01 M NaOH(69.0%) and the extraction with acidic solvent showed the highest pectin yield. The color value increased by extraction with solvent in higher concentration. And at equal concentration, the color value of alkaline extract was higher than that of acidic exctract. There was no relationship between the color value and the extraction yield of dietary fiber. In the investigation on the rheological properties, the shear stress increased in proportion to galacturonic acid contents. While water-soluble dietary fiber extracted with acid and water represented Newtonian rheological properties, the alkaline extract was inclined to have converting property from pseudoplastic to Bingham pseudoplastic with increment of alkaline concentration. In the studies on the time-dependence of apparent viscosity, the thixotropic property with hysteresis loop was observed in alkaline extract.

  • The magnetization angle and thickness dependence of magnetic anisotropy in the exchange-biased [Pd/Co]${\times}$5/FeMn multilayers with an out-of-plane anisotropy were investigated to determine the origin of perpendicular exchange biasing. As the Co thickness increased to 1.5 nm in the [Pd(0.8 nm)/Co(t)]${\times}$5/FeMn(120 nm) films, the hysteresis loops were converted from square loops at a thin Co (<0.4 nm) to complicated round ones at a thick Co. The irregularly asymmetric step (IAS) at the left top of the loop appeared in the loop of the 0.6-nm Co film due to an inhomogeneity in the exchange anisotropy. As the Pd thickness increased to 1.6 nm, the step disappeared, and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was maximized in the Co thickness between 0.6 and 0.9 nm. The conversion of the magnetization loop along the magnetization angle coincided with the equation $H_{(eff)}=H_o\;cos{\theta}$. The IAS of the 0.8-nm Pd film disappeared after thermal annealing up to $200^{\circ}C$ under an external magnetic field.

  • In this work, it is proposed new PD(partial discharge) detection technique using electro-optic effect, for which partial discharges generated from needle-plane electrode in air were detected through optical measuring system by use of $LiNbO3_3$ electro-optic crystal. As a result, it is noticed that PD measurable phase intervals are limited by the asymmetrical D-E hysteresis loop of the crystal with defects and half-wave voltage. However, both number of measured PD pulses and their amplitude were increased with applied voltage, which likely implies that it is possible to detect PD through newly proposed electro-optic method.

  • Carbon and small amounts of alloying elements were added in Fe-5.7% Al ferromagnetic damping alloy. The specific damping capacities(SDC) of these alloys were investigated in relation to the grain size and the magnetic hysteresis loops. The behavior of carbon was analysed by XRD and EDS. These alloys showed characteristic damping nature of ferromagnetic damping materials. The alloying elements decreased SDC and especially the carbon was remarkable. The SDC was observed to be not related with the grain size but with the magnetic hysteresis loop area. The remarkable decrease of SDC by carbon addition was attributed to the locking migration of $90^{\circ}$ magnetic domain wall by the interstitial carbon in Fe-Al solid solution. However, the carbides also seems to decrease the SDC.

  • We present the magnetisation reversal dynamics of epitaxial Fe thin films grown on GaAs(001) and InAs(001) studied as a function of field sweep rate in the range 0.01-160 kOe/s using magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). For 55 and 250 ${\AA}$ Fe/GaAs(001), we find that the hysteresis loop area A follows the scaling relation A ∝ H$\^$${\alpha}$/ with ${\alpha}$=0.03∼0.05 at low sweep rates and 0.33-0.40 at high sweep rates. For the 150 ${\AA}$ Fe/InAs(001) film, ${\alpha}$ is found to be ∼0.02 at low sweep rates and ∼0.17 at high sweep rates. The differing values of ${\alpha}$ are attributed to a change of the magnetisation reversal process with increasing sweep rate. Domain wall motion dominates the magnetisation reversal at low sweep rates, but becomes less significant with increasing sweep rate. At high sweep rates, the variation of the dynamic coercivity H$\sub$c/ is attributed to domain nucleation dominating the reversal process. The results of magnetic relaxation studies for easy-axis reversal are consistent with the sweeping of one or more walls through the entire probed region (∼100 $\mu\textrm{m}$). Domain images obtained by scanning Kerr microscopy during the easy cubic axis reversal process reveal large area domains separated by zigzag walls.

  • Mn doped ZnO films were prepared on Si (100) substrates using sol-gel method. The prepared films were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for decomposition and oxidation of the precursors. XRD analysis revealed the presence of ZnMnO hexagonal wurtzite phase along with the presence of small quantity of $ZnMn_2O_3$ secondary phase and poor crystalline nature. The 2D, 3D views of magnetic domains and domain profiles were obtained using magnetic force microscopy at room temperature. Rectangular shaped domains with an average size of 4.16 nm were observed. Magnetic moment measurement as a function of magnetic field was measured using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry at room temperature. The result showed the ferromagnetic hysteresis loop with a curie temperature higher than 300 K.

  • By appliying an slternate pulsed magnetic field -generated by using a sequential ignition circuit and a magnet exciting circuit- with peak value of about 10 T to the rod type Nd based magnet Nd2Fe12.7Cr1.3B with length of 5 mm and diameter of 3.6 mm, the basic magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, coercivity, maximum energy products, magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic field are investigated with obtaining the major and minor J-H loops of the magnet. The increase in coercivity due to eddy currents in ac measurement of coercivity is calculated considering eddy current loss by analyzing a wave of generating magnetic field. The average coercivity calculated for the magnet is about 12.2 kOe, anisotropy magnetic field and anisotropic constant are measured as 60 kOe 2.43 Mj/$m^3$, respectively.

  • In this research, we used the ion irradiation technique which has an advantae in improving intentionally the properties of surface and interface in a non-equilibrium, instead of the conventional annealing method which has been known to improve the material properties in the equilibrium stat. Cu/Co multilayered films were prepared on SiN4/SiO2/Si substrates by the electron-beam evaporation for the Co layers and the thermal evaporation for the Cu layers in a high vacuum. The ion irradiation with a 80keV Ar+ was carried out at various ion doses in a high vacuum. Hysteresis loops of the films were investigated by magneto-optical polar Kerr spectroscopy at various experimental conditions. The change of atomic structure of the films before and after the ion irradiation was studied by glancing angle x-ray diffraction, and the intermixing between Co and Cu sublayers was confirmed by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The surface roughness and magneto-resistance were measured by atomic force microscopy and with a four-point probe system, respectively. During the magneto-resistance measurement, we changed temperature and the direction of magnetization. From the results of experiments, we found that the change at the interfaces of the Cu/Co multilayered film induced by ion irradiation cause the change of magnetic properties. According to the change in hysteresis loop, the surface inplane component of magnetic easy axis was isotropic before the ion irradiation, but became anisotropic upon irradiation. It was confirmed that this change influences the axial behavior of magneto-resistance. Especially, the magneto-resistance varied in accordance with an external magnetic field and the direction of current, which means that magneto-resistance also shows the uniaxial behavior.

  • The ordering of nanopores in AAO has been improved by using laser interference lithography. After growing Fe and Cu on this substrate in vacuum and removing AAO, Fe nanodots are fabricated. The nanopores in AAO and nanodots are ordered in one dimension following the prepatterning. It has been confirmed from the magnetic hysteresis loop that the Fe nanodots have vortex structure and the dipolar interaction is dominant among them.
