  • Field hulling of high-moisture paddy followed by brown rice drying offers many advantages over the present paddy harvesting and drying offers many advantages over the present paddy harvesting and drying system. We did a preliminary study of the parameters for efficient hulling of high-moisture paddy using the IRRI Centrifugal Huller and two India rice varieties. Hulling capacity , hulling efficiency , brown rice recovery and percent whole bown rice were generally best at the impeller peripheral speed of 44m/s. A second pass through the huller increased hulling capacity , brown rice revery and hulling efficiency, but reduced percent whole brown rice. To solve this , we recommed separation of paddy after hulling and aspiration such that only unhulled and partially -hulled grains will be fed back to the huller. Paddy at even 23% m.c. could be effectively hulled by the impeller-type huller , but the results were generally better at 14 to 17% m.c. Only in percent whole brown rice did the 17 to 23% m.c. range performed better than that of 14% m.c. Difference invarietal response to hulling was observed.

  • Ligand binding properties of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) were characterized by using filtration binding assays. Scatchard analysis using $[^{3}H]N-methylscopolamine$ ($[^{3}H]NMS$) showed that the dissociation constant ($K_d$) and the maximum binding value ($B_{max}$) were $3.3{\pm}0.8{\times}10^{10}$ M and $9.0{\pm}1.1$ fmol/mg protein, respectively. Binding competition experiments indicated that the affinities of C. elegans mAChRs to atropine, scopolamine, and oxotremorine were similar to those of mammalian mAChRs. Pirenzepine binding experiments revealed that the binding pattern of mAChRs in C. elegans closely resembled that of mAChRs in rat brain, suggesting that the receptors consist primarily of Ml subtype. The affinity of mAChRs for oxotrernorine was significantly affected by guanylylimidodiphosphate (Gpp(NH)p), a non hydrolyzable GTP analog, suggesting that mAChRs in C. elegans might be coupled to G proteins. The data presented here indicate the possibility that C. elegans provides a living animal model to study the action mode of the muscarinic cholinergic system.

  • We give the necessary condition for an operator defined on a cartesian product of $c_0(\mathcal{X})$ spaces to be summing or dominated and we show that for the multiplication operators this condition is also sufficient. By using these results, we show that ${\Pi}_s(c_0,{\ldots},c_0;c_0)$ contains a copy of $l_s(l^m_2{\mid}m{\in}\mathbb{N})$ for s > 2 or a copy of $1_s(l^m_1{\mid}{\in}\mathbb{N})$, for any $l{\leq}S$ < ${\infty}$. Also ${\Delta}_{s_1,{\ldots},s_n}(c_0,{\ldots},c_0;c_0)$ contains a copy of $l_{{\upsilon}_n(s_1,{\ldots},s_n)}$ if ${\upsilon}_n(s_1,{\ldots},s_n){\leq}2$ or a copy of $l_{{\upsilon}_n(s_1,{\ldots},s_n)}(l^m_2{\mid}m{\in}\mathbb{N})$ if 2 < ${\upsilon}_n(s_1,{\ldots},s_n)$, where ${\frac{1}{{\upsilon}_n(s_1,{\ldots},s_n})}={\frac{1}{s_1}}+{\cdots}+{\frac{1}{s_n}}$. We find also the necessary and sufficient conditions for bilinear operators induced by some method of summability to be 1-summing or 2-dominated.

  • Biofilter performance to reduce C $H_4$ emissions from MSW landfills was tested under a variety of environmental and design conditions. The optimum soil moisture content for C $H_4$ oxidation in a loamy sand was 13% by weight. The addition of N $O_3$-N did not affect the C $H_4$ oxidation rate. Soil depths of 30cm and 60cm were equally efficient in C $H_4$ oxidation. When the C $H_4$ loading rate was decreased, the percentage of C $H_4$ oxidized increased. The maximum C $H_4$ oxidation rate was 27.2 mol $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$ under optimum conditions (loamy sand soil, 13% moisture content, 30cm soil depth, and an loading rate of 32.8 mol $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$). Based on the above results, the installation of a properly sized and managed biofilter above a landfill cover should be capable of achieving a major reduction in atmospheric methane emissions from MSW landfills built with RCRA covers.

  • Mullite precursors were synthesized with aluminosilicate gels from mixture of aluminum nitrate and sodium orthosilicate by the geopolymer technique at ambient temperature. Then, the gel was heat-treated in air up to $1200^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. Raw and heat-treated gels were characterized by TG-DTA, XRD, FTIR, $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR, TEM. The result to examine the crystallization of behavior though DTA, the synthesized precursors were crystallized in the temperature range from $950^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$. The XRD results showed that the gel compositions were begun to crystallize at various temperature. Also, it was found that the precursors of M-4 begun to crystallize at about $950^{\circ}C$. The M-4 XRD peaks were characterized better than $M-1{\sim}M-3$ at $1000^{\circ}C$. The formation temperature of mullite in this study is much lower than that of previous sol-gel methods, which crystallized at up of $1200^{\circ}C$. TEM investigations revealed that the sample with 10 nm particle size was obtained via heat-treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ for M-4.

  • To assess the internal dose by $^3H\;&\;^{14}C$ in total diet of inhabitants near Wolsung Nuclear Power Plants, TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ concentration in total diet was analyzed for collection region and time. TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ concentrations were in the range of 3.19-42.2 Bq/L, 1.00-39.4 Bq/L, and 0.230-0.855 Bq/gC, respectively. The calculated annual effective dose with TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ is $6.10{\times}10^{-5}mSv/y,\;3.71{\times}10^{-5}mSv/y\;and\;7.08{\times}10^{-3}mSv/y$, respectively. And then annual internal dose with total diet for inhabitants near Wolsung NPPs is about $7.18{\times}10^{-3}mSv/y$, which is about 0.72% of annual effective dose limit 1 mSv/y.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perioperative myocardial damage in pediatric congenital heart disease with the cardiac specific protein of cardiac troponin I(cTpn-I). Methods : All 25 pediatric patients who were diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot or double outlet right ventricle were classified as group A(acyanotic, $SaO_2$ >90%), group B(mildly cyanotic, $SaO_2$ >80-90%) and group C(moderately cyanotic, $SaO_2$ <80%). The control group D was consisted of 10 patients with ventricular septal defects who were operated in the same period. We measured preoperative hemoglobin, preoperative and postoperative(24 and 72 hour) arterial oxygen saturation, cTpn-I and creatine kinase(CK-MB). Results : Total 25 patients were subdivided into 6 of group A, 12 of group B and 7 of group C. The concentrations of preoperative cTpn-I were $0.23{\pm}0.12ng/mL$ in group A, $0.25{\pm}00.12 ng/mL$ in group B, $0.26{\pm}0.13ng/mL$ in group C. And the concentrations of cTpn-I in postoperative 24 hour were $10.04{\pm}5.28ng/mL$ in group A, $12.50{\pm}6.86ng/mL$ in group B, $12.55{\pm}9.90ng/mL$ in group C. Which revealed cTpn-I in group C was higher than that of the another less cyanotic groups. In addition, the concentration of cTpn-I of group C in postoperative 72 hour was higher than any other groups. The concentration of cTpn-I in postoperative 72 hour was statistically correlated with that in postoperative 24 hour and preoperative arterial oxygen saturation(P=0.001). Conclusion : Preoperative chronic cyanosis can influence on the postoperative concentration of cTpn-I in pediatric cardiac patients, which means impairment on the postoperative myocardial recovery.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effect of leaf temperature on light response and respiration during short-term exposure to a sequnce of PPFD cycle(100-200-300-400$\mu$ mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ) under increasing leaf temperature sequnce up to 3$0^{\circ}C$ and in dark condition, increasing up to 46$^{\circ}C$ with step size (1$^{\circ}C$) in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer. When leaflet exposed to low light intensity and temperature, Rubisco activity was higher than remained activity in high condition. Leaves adapted to 100$\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ PPFD had a peak response similar to that of 200$\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 18$^{\circ}C$, but in above PPFD cycle(300, 400$\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ) it represented at 17$^{\circ}C$ and 16$^{\circ}C$, re-spectively. $CO_2$ evolution in dark condition increased rapidly when leaf temperature was increased up to 28$^{\circ}C$ and then 'dipped' below steady-state level from above 4$0^{\circ}C$. Thus, Pananx ginseng is able to take advantage of irradiance increase and decrease of $CO_2$ evolution in dark condition to control leaf temperature.mperature.

  • A bioconcentration experiment was performed for killifish using nonradioactive and radioactive butachlor. At 0.036 ppm concentration, the highest bioconcentration ratio $(C_f/C_w)$ and BCF at steady state recorded as 296 and 87 respectively. And at 0.0036 ppm concentration, the highest $C_f/C_w$ ratio was 169 and the BCF was 51 at steady state. Considering the experimental variation of the BCF's, the BCF of butachlor was tentatively determined to be $69{\pm}28$. And the $^{14}C-butachlor$ and its metabolites depurated about 50% within 12 hours and 90% within 30 hours after depuration experiment started. And in vivo metabolites, designated as M-I, M-II, and M-III, were found in killifish and the excretes as butachlor was metabolised.

  • Gastric smooth muscle of guinea pigs was used to investigate whether the inhibitory effect of calcium antagonists on tonic contraction was accompanied by inhibition of phospholipase C activity. Tonic contraction and $[^{3}H]$ inositol phosphate (IP) formation in response to acetylcholine were measured after pretreatment with verapamil, nifedipine, 8-(N,N-diethylamino)octyl 3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzoate (TMB-8) or EGTA. Verapamil $(10\;{\mu}M)$, TMB-8 $(10\;{\mu}M)$ or EGTA (2 mM) significantly inhibited acetylcholine $(1\;{\mu}M)$-stimulated tonic contraction but nifedipine (100 nM) did not. Acetylcholine dose-dependently increased the formation of $[^{3}H]IP$. This effect was not observed in the presence of 2 mM EGTA. Both verapamil and TMB-8 significantly inhibited $[^{3}H]IP$ formation induced by $10\;{\mu}M$ acetylcholine, whereas nifedipine did not. In a subsequent study, we measured phospholipase C activity in gastric muscle cell homogenate and in permeabilized cells to determine whether calcium antagonists could inhibit the activity directly. The calcium antagonists did not change the phospholipase C activity of the cell homogenate or the permeabilized cells. But EGTA decreased phospholipase C activity by 50%. These results suggest that the inhibitory effects of verapamil and TMB-8 on acetylcholine-stimulated tonic contraction may be accompanied by inhibition of phospholipase C activity.
