  • Behaviour of a fungicide $^{14}C-propiconazole$ was investigated in a field lysimeter of sandy loam soil. At 15 days after rice-seedling transplanting, $^{14}C-propiconazole$ was treated on the soil surface at the rate of 0.12 kg/10a. The cummulative $^{14}C-radioactivity$ in the leachate from the lysimeter soil was 4.4% of the applied $^{14}C$ for 16 weeks. Most radioactivity detected in leachate was in the form of parent compound. At the end of lysimeter experiment. $^{14}C$ radioactivity in lysimeter soil was 76.5% of the applied $^{14}C$ and more than 97% of $^{14}C$ in soil remained in the top 20 cm. The percent of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from lysimeter soil was 7.8% of the applied $^{14}C$. The radioactivity remained in the rice straw after harvest was 7.2% of the applied $^{14}C$, while less than 0.1% of the applied $^{14}C$ was detected in flag leaf, ear, chaff and hulled rice, respectively.

  • Behaviour of a fungicide $^{14}C-propiconazole$ was investigated in a rice plant grown-lysimeter soil. The lysimeter was composed of soil cores of silty clay. $Propiconazole(Tilt\;250^R\;EC)$ plus $^{14}C-labeled$ propiconazole was applied on the surface of lysimeter soil at a rate of 0.12kg/10a after rice transplanting. The application was done consecutively for two years. The behaviours of propiconazole in the lysimeter soil were investigated by measuring the amounts of $^{14}C-leachate$, $^{14}CO_2$, the residues distributed in each soil segment and taken up by rice plants. The relative amounts of $^{14}C$ leached from the lysimeter were the background level of the applied $^{14}C$ throughout expeiment. The amounts of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from the lysimeter were 5.7 and 7.8% of the original $^{14}C$ in the 1st and 2nd treatment, respectively. The amounts of volatile substances soil were the background level throughout experiment, which indicated that propiconazole was stable chemically in the experimental condition. The $^{14}C-activities$ absorbed and translocated into rice plants were 3.7 and 7.6% in 1st and 2nd treatment, respectively. The $^{14}C-activities$ in the soil layer of the lysimeter was distributed mainly in the depth of 0 to 20cm, which suggested propiconazole did not have the risk of groundwater contamination.

  • In order to investigate the quantitative and qualitative properties of leachate with different composition of MSW in solid waste landfill, three lysimeters filled with bottom ash only (Lysimeter A), bottom ash 70%+municipal solid waste 30% (Lysimeter B), and municipal solid waste only (Lysimeter C) respectively were operated under actual meteorological conditions. From the results, Lysimeter A and Lysimeter B were much higher than Lysimeter C in terms of cumulative generation rates of leachate. The pH in leachate from Lysimeter A are in the range of pH 9 to 11, however, the pH of the leachate was gradually changed to the neutral with time. In the case of $Cl^-$, leachates from Lysimeter A and B with bottom ash have high $Cl^-$ concentration whereas leachate produced from Lysimeter C has low $Cl^-$ concentration. In the Lysimeter C with municipal solid waste only, concentration of organic materials in the leachate was much higher than that of leachate produced from the other Lysimeters.

  • An experimental research was conducted to establish primary data for the stabilization assessment of industrial wastes landfill with analysis of waste components and investigation of leachate and gas generation, using three sets of lysimeter as experimental apparatus. Comparing results of lysimeter from data of landfill, it is suggested that lysimeter of this study can be used to accomplish the stabilization assessment of the real landfill site. Moisture content was lower as landfill period was older and combustible component was the highest in lysimeter C. The C/N ratio of waste was 7.4~14.4 and, with the elemental analysis, the theoretical gas generation rate based on the modified Buswell equation was 0.47~0.49 $m^3/kg-dry$ waste in lysimeter C. Considering the C/N ratio of leachate, it is concluded that the addition of carbon source is needed to biodegrade leachate hereafter. Gas generation rate($m^3/kg-dry$ waste) from lysimeter A, B and C was 0.0009, 0.014 and 0.0067, respectively, and different from each other according to the landfill period of wastes. The results in this study show that the biodegradation of microorganism for stabilization of landfill was inhibited and more activated in acidogenic step than in methanogenic of anaerobic degradation.

  • The objective of this study is to find solid waste decomposition in landfill without leachate discharge. This study was observed variation of landfill gas production rate and leachate for stabilization assessment, and using four sets of lysimeter as experimental apparatus. Soild waste decomposition was accelerated in without leachate discharge system by sufficient moisture for methane bacteria. And gas production rate was between 54.2ℓ/kg VS∼335.9ℓ/kg VS in each lysimeter. Generation time of methane gas was showed different in each lysimeter, but it was much faster than literature research. The time of stabilization phase were began as follows : L-1 400 day, L-2 350 day, L-3 170 day and L-4 70 day respectively. Decreasing times of BOD/COD ratio and C/N ratio were necessary more than literature research because organic matter was not discharge such as wash out.

  • Evapotranspiration is one of the important elements related water cycle and there is many kind of measurement method of evapotranspiration today. This study developed mini lysimeter for the purpose of direct measurement of evapotranspiration and installed on 5th, July, 2010 at the field of MRI which located at Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan for continuous measurement and understand relation between evapotranspiration and meteorological elements expecially radiation elements. And compared the evapotranspiration data of lysimeter with Bowen Ratio Method. The result of this study is as follows; There is high related with solar radiation and evapotranspiration with $R^2$=0.947. and 46 % of solar radiation converted into evapotranspiration during clear 5 days. In net radiation also highly related with evapotranspiration, we can derive evapotranspiration is mainly controlled by radiation energy in clear days. From the 104 days data, there is only 9 % difference between Bowen Ratio Method and evapotranspiration of lysimeter which was developed from this study is very useful to estimate evapotranspiration at field site with simple and high accuracy. High accuracy and resolution measurement of evapotranspiration by lysimeter can give a chance further study of meteorological phenomena of on ground expecially in night time condensation which means abnormal energy flow.

  • The evaluation of the effective rainfall is important in the desgin and operation of irrigation systems. But the difinition of the effective rainfall and the method for the estimating effective rainfall is various for each purpose . In this paper, the effective rainfall was defined as amount of rainfall which is remained in the effective soil depth that can be use to consumptive use of crop during growing season. The sol moisture was measured by Neutron prob for the effective rainfall estimation, and theexperiment was conducted for mulched and non-mulched condition of lysimeter during growing season. By the result of analysis and the former definition, the effective rainfall was estimated to be 37.2% for the mulched lysimeter and 40.7% for the non-mulched lysimeter.

  • This study was designed to assess molinate fate in the lysimeter by measuring the total radioactivity in the leachate, evolved $^{14}CO_2$, and $^{14}C$-residues in soil and rice plant. The amounts of applied $^{14}C$ in the leachate from the lysimeter for 20 weeks were 1.05% in 2.31 pore volume (217,465 mL) at the first and 0.34% in the second year, respectively. The amount of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from the lysimeter accounted for 6.47% and 0.03% of applied $^{14}C$ in the first and second year. The $^{14}C$-activities in the soil layer of the lysimeter were distributed 18.0% (1st) and 13.3%(2nd) in the depth of 0 to 10 cm, 4.3 (1st) and 1.1% (2nd) in the depth of 10 to 20 cm. Most of the applied $^{14}C$ was detected in the top 20 cm soil layer. Total $^{14}C$ in rice plants grown at lysimeter were detected 11.46% of applied $^{14}C$. 11.11% in straw, 0.24% in brown rice grain, 0.08% in chaff and 0.03% in ears were distributed in the first year. Consequently, environmental fate of molinate using lysimeter simulating a paddy rice field were investigated 25.24% in soil, 11.64% in rice plant, 1.05% in leachate, 6.74% in evolved $^{14}CO_2$ and 0.02% in volatilized organic chemicals in the first year.

  • Korean territories has formed about 70% of mountainous areas that have acidified serious level to average pH 4-5. There are a number of abandoned metal mines about 1,000 in Korea. However, mine tailings and waste rock included heavy metals are exposed to long-term environment without prevention facility or treatment system. Thus, ongoing management and monitoring of soil environment are required. Most of abandoned mine scattered in forest areas of slopes. Soil erosion due to continuous rainfall in the slopy areas can cause the secondary pollution by the influence eutrophication of water system and the productivity loss of the plant. Therefore, this study would like to estimate pH leaching rate by artificial rainfall using waste neutralization-agent in lysimeter. Moreover, the potentially of secondary pollution related to precipitation is figured out through the experiments, and the optimal planting methods would examinate after neutralizing treatment in soil. Experiments composed three kinds of lysimeter; lysimeter 1 had filled only acidic soil, lysimeter 2 had neutralized soil, and lysimeter 3 had planting plants after neutralized soil. In the results, lysimeter 2 showed the lowest pH leaching, and there is not specific relativity with pH leaching of the seasonal characteristics.

  • Much of the coal ash by thermal power plant has gradually been increased, however researches on the recycling of bottom ash has not been investigated enough so far. In this research, the lysimeter test was conducted to find out the possibilities of bottom ash as soil amendment to improve the physiochemical properties of sandy topsoil of turfgrass in golf course. The turfgrass growth test and leaching test were conducted on the lysimeter. The lysimeter columns were manufactured with various topsoil mixing ratios of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 50% of bottom ash with sand. As a result of leachate analysis through the lysimeter column, the higher ratios of bottom ash mixed affect significantly on water holding capacity of topsoil sand media with decreasing of the percolation rate. The results of leachate analysis in every three days interval, the pH of leachate increased with the bottom ash ratios, but the volume of $NO_3$-N, $NH_4$-N and K decreased significantly. However, the level of EC of leachate had constantly maintained. These results indicate that the application of bottom ash may improve turfgrass growth with water holding capability and fertility of sandy topsoil. However, the negative effects of the bottom ash also evaluated by reducing water permeability and solubility of $PO_4$-P by adsorption into soil particles. The results indicates that the reasonable mixing ratio of the bottom ash as soil amendment should be less than 20% (v/v) with sand which has a low water-holding and fertility in golf course topsoil layers.
