Isolation, purification and characterization of biophysicochemical properties of the three new lectins, MLA-I, MLA-II, MLA-III from the hemolymph of Meretrix lusoria have been reported previously. A series of immunochemical studies were investigated in this work. The three lectins were revealed as having partial identity each other by immunodiffusim and immunoelectrophoresis. These results suggest that MLA lectins are isolectins having similar biophysicochemical properties. Particularly, MLA-I proved to be a potent mitogen for murine splenic as well as human peripheral lymphocytes, and the optimum mitogenic dose were 62.5 and 1.95 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, respectively.
Stromal cell-derived factor (SDF-1) is a CXC chemokine that selectively activates the CXCR4 chemokine receptor. Fibronectin is an intracellular matrix component that binds integrin and mediates cell-matrix adhesion. Activation of the integrin receptor can occur in two ways: by ligand binding (outside-in signaling), and in response to intracellular events (inside-out signaling). In the current study we showed that SDF-$1{\alpha}$ inhibited adhesion of T lymphocyte Jurkat cells resulting from binding high concentrations of fibronectin as well as that of THP-1 monocytes. The effect of SDF-$1{\alpha}$ on fibronectin-mediated adhesion was partly reversed by the CXCR4 receptor antagonist T140. Our results suggest that an SDF-1/CXCR4 signal pathway modulates fibronectin-mediated lymphocytes adhesion.
Water extracts of rice grasshopper (Oxya japonica japonica Thurnberg) were prepared and their antitumor and immunostimulatory activities were investigated using a flow cytometer. When LCT-CT was ip injected into ICR mice at the dose of 33.3 mg/kg before and after the implantation of $4{\times}10^5$ cells/mouse of sarcoma 180 tumor cells, it inhibited the growth of the tumor cells by 96.6%, showed lymphoblstogenic activities on the splenic lymphocytes and increased the expression of CD25 molecules on the splenic T lymphocytes. When co-cultured with the splenic lymphocytes of a BALB/c mouse, LCT-CT showed strong immunostimulatory activities at the concentration of $25{\sim}100{\mu}g/ml$ by significantly increasing lymphoblasts ratio and CD25 expression.
Dermatophagoides pteronissinus (DP) is one of the house dust mites (HDM) associated with allergic diseases. The cysteine protease Der p 1 from DP is a powerful allergen. The pathogenic mechanism of allergy is involved in cytokine secretion of lymphocytes and spontaneous apoptosis of neutrophils. In this study, we investigated whether Der p 1 induces cytokine secretion of lymphocytes and if the release of cytokines is associated with regulation of neutrophil apoptosis. In normal and allergic subjects, Der p 1 increased IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, and GM-CSF release in a time-dependent course. Supernatants collected from normal and allergic neutrophils after Der p 1 stimulation suppressed the apoptosis of normal and allergic neutrophils, although Der p 1 alone has no effect on neutrophils. Der p 1 suppressed neutrophil apoptosis in coculture of normal neutrophils with normal lymphocytes. Der p 1 more strongly suppressed apoptosis of allergic neutrophils cocultured with allergic lymphocytes than normal neutrophils cocultured with normal lymphocytes. In summary, Der p 1 increases the secretion of cytokines, which has anti-apoptotic effects on neutrophils of normal and allergic subjects. These results will contribute to elucidate the pathogenic mechanism of allergic diseases.

The filter elution technique was used to assay Co-60 $\gamma$ ray-induced DNA single-strand breaks(SSB) in EL 4 mouse leukemia cell and mouse spleen lymphocyte. The lymphocytes were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 20 $\mug/ml$) to label [${^3}H$] thymidine. EL 4 cells and lymphocytes in suspension were exposed at $0^{\circ}C$ to 0 Gy, 1 Gy, 5 Gy,10 Gy of Co-60 radiation and elution procedure was performed at PH 12.1. The number of DNA single-strand breaks increased with increasing doses of $\gamma$ rays. The strand scission factor (SSF) was estimated in each experiment (eluted volume 21 ml). The slope for EL 4 cells was $0.01301\pm0.00096\;Gy^{-1}(n=5)$ and the slope for lymphocytes was $0.01097\pm0.00091\;Gy^{-1}(n=5)$. The slopes were significantly different (P<0.005). Thus EL 4 cells were more sensitive to induction of DNA SSB by ionizing radiation than lymphocytes.
The effects of white ginseng and red ginseng ethanol extracts on the proliferation, nitric oxide (NO) production and tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$ (TNF-$\alpha$) in human Band T lymphocytes isolated from blood cell of sasang constitution were examined in vitro. White ginseng extract known as medicine suitable for soeumin constitution showed the highest immune activities such as proliferation, NO production and TNF-$\alpha$ in soeumin constitution, and followed by taeeumin and soyangin, respectively (P<0.05). However, there were immunologically insignificant differences among sasang constitution lymphocytes treated by red ginseng ethanol extract. Both white and red ginseng ethanol extracts showed significantly higher immunological activities than LPS-induced sasang constitution lymphocytes on NO production and TNF-$\alpha$ release (P<0.05). The different immunological activities of white and red ginseng extracts in sasang constitution lymphocytes might be due to the component changes during the processing of ginseng. Thus, the findings of components suitable for all constitutions from red ginseng extract could be applied as a new constitution marker.
This study was designed 1) to compare the distributions of periapical inflammatory cells and 2) to identify lymphocytes and compare the lymphocyte distribution with T lymphocyte subpopulation and then 3) to examine the distribution of cycling cell in human dental periapical lesions. From each of the twenty-five human dental periapical lesions observed one small portion was fixed, embeded in paraffin, sectioned serially and stained with HE. The periapical inflammatory cells were counted to obtain the relative concentration of lymphocyte, plasma cell, macrophage and neutrophil. The large part of each lesion was analysed using Flow cytometer and monoclonal antibodies to obtain the relative concentration of T lymphocyte, B lymphocyte, T'helper cell and T suppressor/cytotoxic cell. In addition to that, seven human dental periapical lesions were examined with DNA analysis to observe the distribution of cycling cell. Following results were obtained: 1. 24 cases of the 32 periapical lesions examined were diagnosed as periapical granuloma and the remaining 8 cases as periapical cyst. Lymphocytes comprised 42.1% of total inflammatory cells in periapical granuloma and 41.8% in periapical cyst. Corresponding percentages for macrophages were 33.8% and 30.3%; for plasma cells, 15.9% and 19.0%; for neutrophils, 8.2% and 8.8%. 2. All of the periapical lesions examined had T lymphocyte, B lymphocyte, T helper cell, T suppressor/cytotoxic cell. And in all cases, T lymphocytes were observed predominantly more than B lymphocytes. 3. In 2 cases of the control group only T lymphocytes were found, and in the remaining 2 cases T lymphocytes were observed predominantly. 4. T helper cells were observed predominantly more than T suppressor/cytotoxic cells in all cases of perapical granulomas. 5. T suppressor/cytotoxic cells were observed predominantly more than T helper cells in 4 cases of periapical cysts (total 5 cases were examined) and only in one case T helper cells were more than T suppressor/cytotoxic cells. 6. In control group, T helper cells were predominant in 2 cases and T helper cells were equivalent to T suppressor/cytotoxic cells in one case. In remaining one case T suppressor/cytotoxic cells were predominant. 7. As the result of DNA analysis, the average proliferating indices of the various groups examined were measured as follows: in the control group 5.45%, in periapical granuloma 6.64%, in periapical cyst 10.1%. The highest index was observed in periapical cyst.

It is generally thought that continuous oxidative damage to DNA is a major contributor to the risk of cancer development. Epidemiological studies suggest that fruits and vegetables might reduce the risk of cancer through their antioxidant properties. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of fruits and fruit juice consumption against the oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes of healthy subjects. (omitted)
The present study was carried out to investigate the optimal conditions on blastogenesis of guinea pig lymphocytes. A microculture system in conjuction with a semiautomatic multiple sample harvester was used to study the in vitro optimal condition of guinea pig lymphocytes. Careful analysis of lymphocyte transformation to concanavalin A (Con A) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mitogen determined optimal conditions as: (a) 10% fetal bovine serum in RPMI-1640 medium (b) 48-hour culture period.
