  • Bloods from slaughtered Korean native cattle (Hanwoo : Bos taurus coreanae) can be used in agriculture with various beneficial effects on the environment. This study was performed to find out the effect of the application of calcium and germanium, which are chelated with peptides made of cattle bloods on the absorption of them by cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Peptide was purified by enzymatic hydrolysis and ultrafiltration from serum protein, which is composed of Asp, Glu, Lue etc. Chelated Ca and Ge were produced by reacting the peptide with $CaCl_2$ and Ge-$132^{(R)}$. Then, they were applied to cherry tomato during cultivation period at the rate of $300mL{\times}3times$ (10 days interval) for each tomato tree. Application of chelated-Ca increased the Ca contents in leaves and fruits of cherry tomato showing as 19.9% and 23.4% in newerly prepared chelated-Ca-200 ($200mg\;L^{-1}$), 8.1% and 6.8% in commecrial Calciolid Ca-300 ($300mg\;L^{-1}$) compared to 3152.6 and $63.2mg\;kg^{-1}$ in control, respectively. Application of chelated-Ge showed the increase in the germanium contents in both leaves and fruits of cherry tomato by over 6 times than those of control and over 4 times than Ge $132^{(R)}$-20 application. As a result of this study, it seemed that the application of chelated-Ca and chelated-Ge would be more effective than the existing commertial one in the absorption of calcium and germanium by cherry tomato.

  • Five year term study from 2002 to 2006 was carried out to examine the effects of continuous long-term application of swine liquid manure on soil chemical properties including heavy metal contents and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in a greenhouse. Treatments were conventional chemical fertilizers and three types of swine slurry; Slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB), Thermophilic aerobic oxidation (TAO), and Bio-mineral water (BMW). Total nitrogen level of the SCB, TAO, and BMW was 0.47%, 0.09%, and less than 0.01%, respectively. The heavy metal contents of the three liquid manures were much lower than the Korean regulation level. The soil phosphorus, potassium, and heavy metal contents after five year continuous application of swine slurry were not significantly higher than those of chemical fertilizer use. Contents of heavy metals in leaves of the crops did not show significant difference among treatments. The levels of copper and zinc, plant essential elements, in leaves were in the range of optimum plant growth. Yields of tomato and cucumber for swine liquid manures were not significantly different from that of chemical fertilizer. The results implied that the three types of swine slurry may not deteriorate soil chemical properties including phosphate and trace elements in greenhouse soils when they are applied as a basal fertilization at a recommended nitrogen rate based on soil testing.

  • The objective of this research was to determine the effect of seed priming on membrane integrity during poriming and germination. Among the five chemicals, $KNO_3$at 150 mL gave the shortest $T_{50}$ (days required to reach 50% of the final germination percentage). Compared to unprimed, the seeds primed with 150 mL $KNO_3$ at 20$^{\circ}C$ for 4 days had reduced $T_{50}$ values when germinated at 15$^{\circ}C$. These results indicated that seed priming is an effective way for rapid and synchronized germination, especially at low temperature. Changes in conductivity of priming solutions during the 4-days period of priming were highly dependent upon the priming agents. Conductivity of the $KNO_3$ and $K_3PO_4$ solution slowly declined during the first 3 hours ad then increased Amount of amino acids, sugars and proteins exuded from seeds into $KNO_3$ solution were less than those into distilled water and $K_3PO_4$. All the results suggested that the $KNO_3$ priming play a positive role in regulating the permeability of cell membranes.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stage and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the cherry tomato 'Koko' in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the root zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for cherry tomato was $NO_3-N\;6.8,\;PO_4-P\;2.7,\;K 3.2,\;Ca\;3.6\;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage, $NO_3-N\;7.3,\;PO_4-P\;2.2,\;K\;3.7,\;Ca\;3.6;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution in a development of cherry tomato developed by Wongkwang university in Korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floriculture in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas th Mssldwijk; PTG) of 1/2S, 1S, and 2S, respectively. The growth was good at the PTG and WU 2S in the early stage and the PTG of 1S and WU of 1S and 2S in the late stage. The highest yield of cherry tomato obtained in the WU of 2S. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when cherry tomato plant was grown in WU of 2S of EC $1.6{\sim}2.0\;dS\;m^{-1}$in the nutrient solution, not only stable growth and yield but also fertilizer reduction can be obtained than that of PTG.

  • High temperature stress in summer season at plastic house is a limiting factor for tomato fruit set and yield. This study was performed to assess the effects of gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and 2,4-Dichlophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) spray on fruit set, yield, and quality of tomato cv. 'Adoration'(Enza Zaden Co., Ltd.) under the plastic house in Hwacheon, 2011. Four concentrations (0-, 5-, 10- and $15mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of $GA_3$, and three concentrations (0-, 5- and $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) 2,4-D were sprayed in early flowering of tomato in the plastic house, and fruit set, yield and quality characters were observed. The results showed that spray of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$ significantly increased the fruit set by 14.2% than unsprayed. The spray of $GA_3$ significantly increased the marketable fruit number, fruit weight, and yield. The spray of 2,4-D on blossoms significantly affected the fruit set percentage, fruit weight, marketable fruit weight and yield, and the highest fruit set observed as 62.5% in combined spray of $GA_3$ and 2,4-D at each $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Fruit size and total soluble solids significantly varied with the concentrations of $GA_3$ sprayed. The result indicates that the spray of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$ and $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 2,4-D can be more economic and effective to increase the fruit set, and yield in tomato under high temperature condition in plastic house.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of new materials with forest topsoil for hydroseeding measures that is environmentally and ecologically stable revegetation measures on rock cut-slopes. Field hydroseeding experiment was used with a completely randomized design at highway rock cut-slopes in April, 1997. Results obtained in this study were summarized as follows: Particle size distribution of 3 mixed-soil materials that consisted of forest topsoil, decomposed granite soil, compost, sludge, and bottom ash did not show a significant difference. As appending the amount of forest topsoil, soil bulk density was increased. Soil hardness was slightly increased in early period, and then decreased with the flourishing of plants. The number of individuals increased, more than $3,000seedlings/m^2$, after 1 month, and it was decreased as time passes because of competition between the seeded species and the naturally emerged species. In addition to the seeded species, seeding plot has more than 6 species (Rubus crataegifolius, Eleusine indica, Erigeron canadensis, Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme, etc.) per $m^2$ were naturally appeared in the first year. From the viewpoint of species diversity promotion, the capability of using forest topsoil as seed bank sources was high. In order to apply in the field, the investigation and analysis of topsoil availability (quantity and quality of seed source, soil texture and organic composition) should be carried out before-hand.

  • A tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Naomi F1) juice was separated into ascorbate and phenolic portions using a Sep-pak $C_{18}$ cartridge, and its each portion was tested for inhibition of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation. Ascorbate and phenolic portions of tomato juice inhibited NDMA formation by $81.37{\pm}0.25%$ and $72.03{\pm}0.25%$, respectively. The phenolic portion was further fractionated by prep-HPLC and inhibitory effects of NDMA formation by 4 fractions $(1{\sim}4)$ from tomato juice was tested under the different pH conditions (pH 1.2 and 4.2). Fraction 2 inhibited NDMA formation by $50.10{\pm}0.46%$ (pH 1.2) and $64.30{\pm}0.20%$ (pH 4.2), respectively. Fraction 2 was further separated into 4 subfractions $(2a{\sim}2d)$. Subfraction 2b especially inhibited NDMA formation by $70.62{\pm}0.45%$ (pH 1.2) and $75.30{\pm}0.45%$ (pH 4.2). This subfraction was confirmed o-coumaric acid through the analysis of GC-Mass spectrum, $^1H-NMR$ and $^{13}C-NMR$.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth and production of tomato (Lycopersicon Esculentum Mill cv. Tefunis) according to the water content of non-recycled rockwool culture in high-rise tomato greenhouse. Daily irrigation amount was 3.8 times higher in the irrigation control by Integrated Solar Radiation (ISR) than in the Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) sensor. Water content of ISR and FDR was 90-95 and 60-65%, respectively. Plant height and weight of tomato fruit was 1.2-1.9 times longer and 1.2-2.0 times heavier in the ISR than in the FDR sensor, respectively. No significantly differed to sugar content of tomato by treatments. Marketable fruits were the higher 1.3 times in the ISR compared with the FDR sensor. Cracking percentage in the ISR was also the higher 2.0 times compared with FDR sensor. Therefore, Irrigation control by ISR was appropriate to improve of plant growth and production of tomato with non-recycled rockwool culture in greenhouse during long-term cultivation.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the level of $CO_2$ (370 and $650{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$) and temperature (ambient and ambient+$5^{\circ}C$) on tomato growth and fruit characteristics as affected by the application rate of N-fertilizer (68 and $204\;N\;kg\;ha^{-1}$), for the purpose of evaluating the influence of elevated $CO_2$ and temperature on tomato crop. The elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ and temperature increased the plant height and stem diameter for tomato crop, while the differences among the nitrogen(N) application rates were not significantly different. Under the elevated $CO_2$, temperature, and a higher N application rate, the biomass of aerial part increased. The fruit yield showed the same result as the biomass except for the elevated temperature. The elevated temperature made the size of fruit move toward the small, but the elevated $CO_2$ and the application of N-fertilizer were vice versa. The sugar content and pH of fruit juice were affected by nitrogen application rate, but not by the elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. These results showed that both the elevated $CO_2$ and temperature stimulated the vegetative growth of aerial parts for tomato, but each effects on the yield of fruit showed an opposite result between the elevated temperature and $CO_2$. In conclusion, the elevated $CO_2$ increased tomato yield and the ratio of large size of fruit, but the elevated temperature did not. Therefore, to secure the productivity of tomato as nowadays in future environment, it will need to develop new breeder as high temperature-tolerable tomato species or new type of cropping systems.

  • 'Hei' (Lycopersicon Esculentum Mill.) Black Tomato examined changes in fruit shape, fruit weight and cracking percentage with increasing temperature in high-rise tomato greenhouse during long-term cultivation in summer season. Fruit diameter is greater than fruit length from the first cluster to the ninth cluster. However, fruit length is longer than fruit diameter from the tenth cluster to the fifteenth cluster. Fruit shape index (L/D) is below 100% from the first cluster to the ninth cluster and above 100% from the tenth cluster to the fifteenth cluster. Fruit weight was decreased during temperature increasing in greenhouse. However, fruit cracking percentage was increased to temperature increasing during cultivation period. Thus, fruit shape, fruit weight and fruit cracking of 'Hei' black tomato were influenced by increasing of temperature in greenhouse during long-term cultivation.
