  • As part of the effort to reduce the weight of powertrain, a hollow crankshaft has been designed. The mass reduction of the crankshaft changes the dynamic properties of the crankshaft such as moment of inertia, and torsional, bending stiffness. The purpose of this paper is to compare the dynamic behavior of the hollow crankshaft with that of the original, solid crankshaft. Global dynamic behavior of the crankshaft is analyzed bgy the transfer matrix method(TMM). The crankshaft has been modeled by 38 lumped mass and stiffness elements. The dynamic patameters of each lumped element are provided by Finite Element Method(FEM). The responses of the crankshaft from TMM are fed back as loading conditions to the Finite Element model to obtain dynamic stresses for critical areas of the crankshaft.

  • The locus of a camshaft supported on camshaft bearings has been investigated using transient method. Forces applied to camshaft are composed of two components, one is transfer force between cam and tappet, the other is frictional force. These forces have been calculated using lumped mass model and EHL theory. ADI method has been used for numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As the result of analysis, it is found that camshaft bearings exist in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.

  • The camshaft locus at camshaft beating in a direct acting OHC valve train system has been investigated using the transient method. Forces applied to the camsfiaft are composed of two components, one is the transfer force between the cam and the tappet, the other is the frictional force. These forces have been calculated using the lumped mass model and the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. The alternating direction implicit method has been used for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for the transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that camshaft bearings were mainly in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.

  • In this paper, a modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating structures composed of beams and shells employing multi-reference frames is presented. The rotary inertia effect and the geometric stiffening effect that results from centrifugal inertia force we considered for beams and shells with lumped mass model. In most previous studies, single reference frame has been employed for the vibration analysis. In the present study, a modeling method employing multi-reference frames is presented and the effects of employing multi-reference frames on the analysis accuracy are investigated through solving numerical examples.

  • With the world-wide demand on the emission minimization, the needs on the diesel aftertreatment devices with high efficiency are also increasing. In order to effectively develop or design a high-performance diesel particulate filter, a clear understanding on the deposition and regeneration mechanism is required. In the present study, a theory on the lumped parameter model for wall-flow type diesel particulate filters is described focusing on the deposition efficiency, pressure drop inside the filter. The fourth order explicit Runge-Kutta method is utilized for the mass flow rate computation. Engine operation modes with controlled and uncontrolled regeneration options are selected. The computational lumped parameter model is validated by comparing the computed results with the measured data.

  • In this paper, the inertance tube is modeled by the distributed impedance model. This model is verified by the analytical solutions for the long tube without the reservoir. In this model the distributed impedace effect of the inertance tube is included and mass flow rate and pressure distributions are calculated along the inertance tube for various inertance tube lengths. Mass flow rate at the inlet of the inertance tube is also calculated by this model and compared to the lumped impedance method. Mass flow rate by the distributed model shows quite different behaviors from the lumped model when the operating frequency is high and the length of the tube becomes large.

  • A decoupling technique for simulating near-field wave motions in two-phase media is introduced in this paper. First, an equivalent but direct weighted residual method is presented in this paper to solve boundary value problems more explicitly. We applied the Green's theorem for integration by parts on the equivalent integral statement of the field governing equations and then introduced the Neumann conditions directly. Using this method and considering the precision requirement in wave motion simulation, a lumped-mass FEM for two-phase media with clear physical concepts and convenient implementation is derived. Then, considering the innate attenuation character of the wave in two-phase media, an attenuation parameter is introduced into Liao's Multi-Transmitting Formula (MTF) to simulate the attenuating outgoing wave in two-phase media. At last, two numerical experiments are presented and the numerical results are compared with the analytical ones demonstrating that the lumped-mass FEM and the generalized MTF introduced in this paper have good precision.

  • High speed engines with high power are increasingly on demands and almost engines employ crankshafts Such problems as bending and torsional vibrations become the point at issue in crankshaft analysis and design. In this study to overcome the diffiiculty with the large amount of computation in finite element vibration analysis of a crankshaft, a reduction method based on influence coefficient and lumped parameter is presented. which reduces the computation amount effectively and can be used in vibrational analysis and design of any types of crankshafts Crank journal and pinparts are meodelled as elements with 6degrees of freedom per node. Crank web part is modelled using equivalent mass and stiffness matices . based up on lumped parameter and influence coefficient respectively to reduce total degrees of freedom considerablely. To confirm the scheme of the study the results are compared with the known data and they are coincident. Also a simple crankshaft is designed and manufactured for experiments. The calculated results using reduction method and the experimental results agree well The scheme of this study can be utilized in evaluation results agree well. • Vibration response of the tower structure of a 750kW wind turbine (W/T) generator is investigated by measurement and analysis. Acceleration response of the W/T tower under various operation condition is monitored in real time by the vibration monitoring system using LabVIEW. Resonance state of the tower structure is diagnosed in the operating speed range. Resonance frequency range of the test model is investigated with the wind speed data of the test site. To predict the tower resonance frequency, tower is modeled as an equivalent beam with a lumped mass and Rayleigh energy method is applied. Calculated tower bending frequency is in good agreement with the measured value and the result shows that the simplified model can be used in the design stage of the W/T tower.

  • A hollow crankshaft is considered as part of an effort to reduce the weight of the automobile powertrain. Since the resulting mass reduction alters both the inertia and stiffness properties of the crankshaft, the vibration characteristics of the hollow crankshaft needs to be investigated in comparison with the original solid crankshaft. The crankshafts are modeled by 38 lumped mass and stiffness elements, in which the dynamic parameters for each lumped element are obtained by the finite element calculation. The fluid-film bearings supporting the crankshaft give rise to linear spring and damping elements that can be derived from the hydrodynamic bearing model. The transfer matrix method is applied to yield the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the crankshaft vibration. The natural frequencies of the hollow crankshaft are founded to be greater than that of the solid crankshaft, and the incorporation of the bearing stiffness tends to accentuate the difference.
