  • Recent technical advances in OLEDs (organic light emitting devices) requires more and more the improvement in low operation voltage, long lifetime, and high luminance efficiency. Inverted top emission OLEDs (ITOLED) appeared to overcome these problems. This evolved to operate better luminance efficiency from conventional OLEDs. First, it has large open area so to be brighter than conventional OLEDs. Also easy integration is possible with Si-based driving circuits for active matrix OLED. But, a proper buffer layer for carrier injection is needed in order to get a good performance. The buffer layer protects underlying organic materials against destructive particles during the electrode deposition and improves their charge transport efficiency by reducing the charge injection barrier. Hexaazatriphenylene-hexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN), a discoid organic molecule, has been used successfully in tandem OLEDs due to its high workfunction more than 6.1 eV. And it has the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level near to Fermi level. So it plays like a strong electron acceptor. In this experiment, we measured energy level alignment and hole current density on inverted OLED structures for hole injection. The normal film structure of Al/NPB/ITO showed bad characteristics while the HAT-CN insertion between Al and NPB greatly improved hole current density. The behavior can be explained by charge generation at the HAT-CN/NPB interface and gap state formation at Al/HAT-CN interface, respectively. This result indicates that a proper organic buffer layer can be successfully utilized to enhance hole injection efficiency even with low work function Al anode.

  • In this study, the luminance, luminous efficiency and address time of an PDP as a parameter of the phosphor thickness and the size of discharge space are investigated. The maximum luminance and luminous efficiency are obtained at the phosphor thickness of 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for the rib height of 110 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. For the rib height of 120~160 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the maximum values are obtained at the thickness of 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ regardless of the kind of R, G and B phosphor. These results do not affected by the variation of discharge space. The average decrease rate of the total charge to the phosphor thickness is about 3.35pc/cell/10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the average increase rate of the addressing time is about 0.027 $mutextrm{s}$/10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • The electrical and the optical properties of blue organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) with a multiple emitting layer (EML) acting as electron and hole trapping layers were investigated. While the luminance efficiency of the OLEDs with a multiple EML was very stable, regardless of variations in the applied voltage.

  • The detailed studies regarding to the front and rear panel geometries of plasma display were needed to improve the luminance and efficiency. In plasma displays, 3-dimensional optical code can be used to analyze the variation of geometries and the changing of optical properties. The visible light distributions and illuminance were simulated depending on bus electrode position, ITO geometries, and alteration of dielectric layer's properties. This paper is concerned with development of a cell having high luminance and high efficiency for optical simulation. And the result of values could be expected to the application of real POP cell.

  • In an attempt to enhance luminance efficiency and to reduce discharge delays of test panels with aluminum fence-electrodes, various designs of the electrodes were prepared by chemically etching the aluminum foils bonded to soda-lime glass substrate via anodic bonding process. The effects of fence design on luminance and discharge characteristics were investigated and compared with conventional ac-PDPs. These results showed a possibility of using fence-type aluminum electrode at front plates of ac-PDDs without sacrificing its performance.

  • We report efficient white organic electroluminescent devices consisting of a blue-emitting layer of 9,10-bis[(2",7"-di-t-butyl)-9',9"-spirobifluorenyl]anthracene (TBSA) and a red-emitting layer of 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-[2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[i,j]quinolizin-8-yl)vinyl]-4H-pyran) (DCM2) doped into 4,4'bis[N-(1-napthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]-biphenyl (${\alpha}-NPD$). The device shows the CIE coordinates of (0.32, 0.37). The external quantum efficiency is about 3.4 % and the luminous efficiency is about 3.9 lm/W at luminance of 100 $cd/m^{2}$. The maximum luminance is about 45,400 $cd/m^{2}$ at 11.5 V.

  • The sustain discharge mode using various auxiliary pulses was proposed to improve both the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac-plasma display panel (ac-PDP). It was found that the various auxiliary pulses, which were applied at the rising and falling time of the sustain pulse, played a role in strengthening both the main and self-erasing discharges. As a result, the sustain waveforms with auxiliary pulse improved both the luminance of 23 % and the luminous efficiency of 36 %, when compared with the conventional sustain waveform without auxiliary pulse.

  • Effects of Rb doping on the aging characteristics have been studied in SrS:Ce thin film electroluminescence (EL) devices. It has been found that a luminance saturation and decrease of an EL efficiency are suppressed by Rb doping. For the SrS:Ce,Rb device, a luminance and an efficiency after 1024 h of aging at 1 kHz drive maintain at about 70% and 80% of the initial values, respectively.

  • In this work, we have seen the effect of hole-transporting layer in organic light-emitting diodes using N,N'-biphenyl-N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine(TPD) and N,N'-biphenyl-N,N'-bis-(1-naphenyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine(NPB). NPB is regarded as a better hole trans porting material than TPD, since it has a higher glass transition temperature$(T_g)$. And current -voltage, luminance-voltage and external quantum efficiency of device were measured with the thickness variation of buffer layer using copper phathalocyanine(CuPc) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at room temperature. We have obtained an improvement of External quantum efficiency when the CuPc 30[nm] and PTFE 1.0[nm] is used.

  • A scalable video coding (SVC) extension to the H.264/AVC standard has been developed by the Joint Video Team (JVT). SVC provides spatial, temporal and quality scalability with high coding efficiency and low complexity. SVC is now developing the extension of the first version including color format scalability. The paper proposes to remove some luminance related header and luminance coefficients when an enhancement layer adds only additional color information to its lower layer. Experimental results shows 0.6 dB PSNR gain on average in coding efficiency compared with an approach using the existing SVC standard.
