NONNEGATIVE INTEGRAL MATRICES HAVING GENERALIZED INVERSES

  • For an $m{\times}n$ nonnegative integral matrix A, a generalized inverse of A is an $n{\times}m$ nonnegative integral matrix G satisfying AGA = A. In this paper, we characterize nonnegative integral matrices having generalized inverses using the structure of nonnegative integral idempotent matrices. We also define a space decomposition of a nonnegative integral matrix, and prove that a nonnegative integral matrix has a generalized inverse if and only if it has a space decomposition. Using this decomposition, we characterize nonnegative integral matrices having reflexive generalized inverses. And we obtain conditions to have various types of generalized inverses.

Ultimate torsional behaviour of axially restrained RC beams

  • This article presents a computing procedure developed to predict the torsional strength of axially restrained reinforced concrete beams. This computing procedure is based on a modification of the Variable Angle Truss Model to account for the influence of the longitudinal compressive stress state due to the axial restraint conditions provided by the connections of the beams to other structural elements. Theoretical predictions from the proposed model are compared with some experimental results available in the literature and also with some numerical results from a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis. It is shown that the proposed computing procedure gives reliable predictions for the ultimate behaviour, namely the torsional strength, of axially restrained reinforced concrete beams under torsion.

Calibration of model parameters for the cyclic response of end-plate beam-to-column steel-concrete composite joints

  • Composite joints, considering the composite action of steel and concrete, exhibit, in general, high strength and high ductility. As a consequence, the use of this type of joint has been increasing in many countries, especially in those that are located in earthquake-prone regions. In this paper, a hysteretic model with pinching is presented that is able to reproduce the cyclic response of steel and composite joints. Secondly, the computer implementation and adaptation of the model in a spring element within the computer code Seismosoft is described. The model is subsequently calibrated using a series of experimental test results for composite joints subjected to cyclic loading. Finally, typical parameters for the various joint configurations are proposed.

Fatigue experiments on steel cold-formed panels under a dynamic load protocol

  • A dynamic load protocol has been used to experimentally simulate fatigue behavior in cold-formed metal panels with screwed connections under wind loading. The specific protocol adopted is an adaptation of SIDGERS, originally developed for non-metallic membranes, which is composed of levels each under increasing load values. A total of 19 tests were performed on 3.35 m long by 0.91 m wide panels, identified as Type B-wide rib and Type E, both with screw connections at the edge and at the center, thus conforming two-span specimens. In some configurations the panels were fixed at the valleys, whereas crest-fixed connections were also investigated. Reinforcing the connections by means of washers was also investigated to evaluate their efficiency in improving fatigue capacity. The experimental results show maximum load capacities in improved connections with washers of approximately twice of those with classical connections.

Wind pressure and buckling of grouped steel tanks

  • Wind tunnel experiments on small scale groups of tanks are reported in the paper, with the aim of evaluating the pressure patterns due to group effects. A real tank configuration is studied in detail because one tank buckled during a hurricane category 3. Three configurations are studied in a wind tunnel, two with several tanks and different wind directions, and a third one with just one blocking tank. The pressures were measured in the cylindrical part and in the roof of the tank, in order to obtain pressure coefficients. Next, computational buckling analyses were carried out for the three configurations to evaluate the buckling pressure of the target structure. Finally, imperfection-sensitivity was investigated for one of the configurations, and moderate sensitivity was found, with reductions in the maximum load of the order of 25%. The results help to explain the buckling of the tank for the levels of wind experienced during the hurricane.

  • Purpose: Concerns over the quantity of available freshwater for agriculture have triggered the development of technologies intended to increase efficiency of water use, especially with regard to irrigation. A new technique called fertirrigation has been developed to use the same irrigation equipment for fertilization. Methods: Since the above-mentioned technique requires care during installation and use on farms, current analysis focuses on some of its characteristics. Results: High uniformity irrigation systems provide the best distribution of fertilizers, especially when used in combination with drip irrigation or micro-aspersion. The factors purity, compatibility, acidification, salinity, and solubility should be taken into account. Conclusions: Fertirrigation provides a significant increase in productivity as it allows for highly controlled nutrient application during the entire growing season. However, it may cause serious problems if misused or overused.

  • Let p be a prime number. It is known that the order o(r) of a root r of the irreducible polynomial $x^p-x-l$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ divides $g(p)=\frac{p^p-1}{p-1}$. Samuel Wagstaff recently conjectured that o(r) = g(p) for any prime p. The main object of the paper is to give some subsets S of {1,...,g(p)} that do not contain o(r).

  • Let q be a power of 16. Every polynomial $P\in\mathbb{F}_q$[t] is a strict sum $P=A^2+A+B^3+C^3+D^3+E^3$. The values of A,B,C,D,E are effectively obtained from the coefficients of P. The proof uses the new result that every polynomial $Q\in\mathbb{F}_q$[t], satisfying the necessary condition that the constant term Q(0) has zero trace, has a strict and effective representation as: $Q=F^2+F+tG^2$. This improves for such q's and such Q's a result of Gallardo, Rahavandrainy, and Vaserstein that requires three polynomials F,G,H for the strict representation $Q=F^2$+F+GH. Observe that the latter representation may be considered as an analogue in characteristic 2 of the strict representation of a polynomial Q by three squares in odd characteristic.

Testing of Stochastic Trends, Seasonal and Cyclical Components in Macroeconomil Time Series

  • We propose in this article a procedure for testing unit and fractional orders of integration, with the roots simultaneously occurring in the trend, the seasonal and the cyclical component of the time series. The tests have standard null and local limit distributions. However, finite sample critical values are computed, and several Monte Carlo experiments conducted across the paper show that the rejection frequencies against unit (and fractional) orders of integration are relatively high in all cases. The tests are applied to the UK consumption and income series, the results showing the importance of the roots corresponding to the trend and the seasonal components and, though the unit roots are found to be fairly suitable models, we show that fractional processes (including one for the cyclical component) may also be plausible alternatives in some cases.

Damping and frequency changes induced by increasing levels of inelastic seismic demand

  • The objective in this research is to determine the feasibility of using changes on the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure to identify different levels of seismic induced damage. Damping ratio and natural frequency changes in a RC bridge column are analyzed using different signal processing techniques like Hilbert Transforms, Random Decrement and Wavelet Transforms. The data used in the analysis was recorded during a full-scale RC bridge column shake table test. The structure was subjected to ten earthquake excitations that induced different levels of inelastic demand on the column. In addition, low-intensity white noises were applied to the column in-between earthquakes. The results obtained show that the use of the damping ratio and natural frequency of vibration as damage indicators is arguable.
